Once Mario and Luigi have both grabbed onto the Dropchopper, it slowly rises into the air. The player can continue to tilt the 3DS to change the target area below. Once the Dropchopper hovers above an enemy, either {{button|3ds|A}} or {{button|3ds|B}} must be pressed to cause the Dropchopper to drill down into whatever is currently below it with tremendous force, heavily damaging the enemy it directly hits and moderately damaging enemies in the target circle with the impact's shockwave. The attack fails if both Mario and Luigi cannot grab onto the chopper in time, and if a single Bro manages to grab on, the attack continues as normal but deals minimal damage. Also, if a stack of [[Biddybud]]s are hit, the entire stack takes damage all at once.

Dropchopper is Luigi's third available Bros. Attack in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. In the former, Luigi obtains the 10 Attack Pieces for this attack on Mount Pajamaja. In the latter, Luigi obtains this Bros. Attack after the trio drill-dashes Nabbit between Doop Doop Dunes and Mount Brrr. It costs 7 BP (4 if Casual Bros. is equipped) to use this attack. It deals damage using the boots, doing critical damage to enemies weak to jump attacks. However, it can hit spiked enemies.

Upon using the attack, Mario and Luigi run into the foreground. They run back toward the enemies, with the Dropchopper flying over them. Tilting the 3DS makes the chopper move in the direction the handheld is tilted in (the Circle Pad is used instead in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam). Once the Dropchopper is above one of the brothers, the player must press A Button or B Button to let Mario or Luigi jump and grab onto the Dropchopper. Then, the same is done for the other brother. Once Mario and Luigi have both grabbed onto the Dropchopper, the craft starts to rise into the air. The player can continue to tilt the 3DS to change the target area below. When the Dropchopper nears the enemies, it will start to slow down, and a target arrow and circle appears on the ground.

Once above the intended target, press the button for the topmost brother (the one who jumped to the Dropchopper first). The Mario Bros. release the Dropchopper and drill down into whatever is currently below. This heavily damages any enemy directly hit, ignoring spikes. If that enemy is a stack of Biddybuds, the entire stack takes damage all at once. This impact sends out a shockwave that moderately damages grounded enemies, even if the slam hits the ground.

If Bros. grab onto the Dropchopper faster, it has more time to gain height, which in turn increases the damage. With sufficient height, the shockwave is wider than the circle that indicates the range.

The attack fails if both Mario and Luigi cannot grab onto the chopper in time. They trip, and the Dropchopper flies away. If the player does not press the button to drop and instead flies past the enemies, the Dropchopper will explode and no damage is dealt. If only one Bro grabs on, the attack is allowed to continue but deals minimal damage.

The faster Mario and Luigi grab the Dropchopper, the more likely they are to get an "Excellent" attack rating. However, an "Excellent" rating only occurs if the attack directly hits an enemy. Slower grabs, and a missed slam contribute cause the player to get lower ratings of "Great", "Good", and "OK". An attack only performed with one brother does not get a rating.

The Mad Skillathon in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team gives the Dropchopper a battery, where the Bros have to power the battery by grabbing clocks that increase time in the first phase, and the second phase involves stomping enemies, with the first stomp in each group giving a single point, the second 2, the third 3, the fourth 4, and so on, with the fourth and onward adding additional time. The stomp's shockwave is removed.
