Hop or Pop is a 1-vs-3 minigame played in Mario Party 4. The name of the minigame is a pun on the title of Dr. Seuss's book Hop on Pop.

Introduction[edit]

The camera shows the team players inside balloons as they bounce. They get shocked as a spiky ball with the solo player inside drops into the arena. The minigame then begins.

Gameplay[edit]

Each player on the team is inside a balloon, while the solo player is inside a spiky ball. The solo player must run around, trying to pop the other players by running into them. The team must hop around, avoiding the solo player. The team players can jump farther if they time their jumps exactly right. If the solo player succeeds in popping all three team members, the solo player wins. If any team member remains after 45 seconds, the entire team wins.

Ending[edit]

After time runs out, or if all three team players have their balloons popped, the balloons and spiky ball containing the players disappear. If the solo player wins, they will run to the center of the stage and do their winning pose. If the team of three wins, the remaining team players will do their winning poses while the solo player does their losing animation.

Controls[edit]

  • Control Stick – Move
  • A Button – Jump

In-game text[edit]

  • Game Rules – "One player gets in a spiky ball and tries to pop the balloons of the other three. If any of the three targets survive, all three win."
  • Advice – "If the players with balloons time their jumps just right, they can jump farther."
