Bowser, Mario Party 9

Magma Mine is one of the seven boards in Mario Party 9. The starting vehicle is the Shaky Mine Cart. The Bone Barrow and the Chain Chomp Coupe are the unlockable vehicles. The mid-boss is a giant Spike, while the main boss which is fought at the end is a Chain Chomp. In solo mode, the player will have to face both Magikoopa and Shy Guy in this board (as well as the following board), with the possibility of an AI partner.

Layout[edit]

The players start out at the bottom of the mine, in front of a circle of lava. The players ride around the circle to a large ramp leading up. About midway is the boss fort where the mid-boss Spike in solo mode is fought. After the battle, the players keep following the track, which goes in different directions (like right and left) to eventually reach the top where the Guard Door and a stage boss (Chain Chomp in solo mode) is located. After the mid-boss, the magma shown earlier will rise about to where the players are; it will then rise two vertical spaces each turn after that (treating every row of spaces as a single space). At this point, there are spaces that are exclusive to this board called Magma Spaces. This particular space increases the amount of spaces the lava will raise by the number of vertical spaces shown when landed on. The player who is captain when the lava catches up to the cart will lose half of their Mini Stars. If the captain hits the magma while he/she has an odd number of Mini Stars, the bigger portion will be taken. Once the players reach the top of the volcano, the magma will stop chasing them.

Which Way Wheel[edit]

Another known gimmick occurs when the players reach a fork in the path (one spot is the circle of lava). Each player chooses which way they want to go (left or right). Each player may choose a direction, and once each player has decided one of the players is randomly selected. If the wheel stops on a player who chose left, the cart will go left. If it stops on a character who wants to go right, the cart would go right. If all players choose the same direction, the vehicle simply moves in that direction without having to spin the wheel to select a character.

Vehicle[edit]

The characters ride a special mine cart, capable of both moving along a track on the ground and climbing vertical tracks, on this board. The vehicle available from the start is the Shaky Mine Cart. The Bone Barrow and the Chain Chomp Coupe can be purchased from the Museum for 200 Party Points each.

Dice Block Chicken[edit]

In this Captain Event, the players leave their vehicle and board separate mine carts on identical paths. Each path includes several sets of Mini Stars and a cliff at the end. Each player rolls a Dice Block and moves forward that many spaces, although all move simultaneously. The captain can choose to stop before a round of Dice Block rolling begins, and the event ends when the captain decides to stop, falls off the cliff, or collects all available Mini Stars. Any players who fall off earn no Mini Stars, and all other players earn however many they collected.

Spike Strike[edit]

The players are in the volcano. Spike throws spiked balls to the players, and they have to point to the screen and select an item to throw back the spiked ball to Spike and win points. The possible items are a Golden Hammer (3 pts.), a Normal Hammer (1 pt.), and a stick (-1 pt.). Players will also lose one point if they do not select an item at all. After half his health is depleted, the lava in the room where Spike is fought will rise, meaning players have less time to counter his attack.

Chain Chomp Romp[edit]

The battle takes place at the peak of the mine. The players start out behind mine carts on tracks leading to cannons. The Chain Chomp appears in front of the cannons. The players must choose a cart whose path leads to a cannon. Once they reach a cannon, it shoots the Chain Chomp and gives the player points, one for a normal cannon and three for a golden one. If the player's path leads to the Chain Chomp, the Chain Chomp hurts the player and takes away one point. There are four side tracks that join two adjacent tracks, though none of the gaps have two or more connecting side tracks. At first, there are four cannons, but when the Chain Chomp drops to half health, three cannons appear.

Profiles[edit]

  • Mario Party 9 Website bios:
    • Flag of the United States of America since July 4, 1960. For North American (and sometimes South American) release dates. "A volatile volcano burns mighty hot in this stage. Watch out for the rising lava!"
    • Flag of the European Union (previously the European Economic Community). For European release dates. "Beware of the lava rising behind you as you ride through Magma Mine, and try to make sure you’re not behind the wheel when it finally catches up! Everyone gets a say in which path you should take to progress, but will the whole party be in agreement?"
