When Diddy and Dixie enter a Steerable Barrel, they are able to move it around in any direction freely. However, unlike with Rotatable Barrels, the Kongs cannot rotate and aim the barrel, because it always faces one direction. Most Steerable Barrels have a timer when entered, and it varies from one to five seconds. When the timer reaches zero, the Kongs are automatically blasted out of the Steerable Barrel, which also vanishes and returns to its original location. This means Diddy and Dixie must quickly blast into the next Steerable Barrel or fall onto the nearest land.

Steerable Barrels do not appear in Donkey Kong Land 2, even in its own Fiery Furnace level.

Steerable Barrels[1] (also referred to as Steer Barrels in an issue of Nintendo Power)[2] are a type of Barrel Cannon appearing only in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. They can be distinguished from the control pad depicted on them. Steerable Barrels appear only in Fiery Furnace, where they have a crucial role of carrying Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong across the enormous lava gaps. While the Kongs are inside a Steerable Barrel, they can move it freely in any direction. However, unlike with Rotatable Barrels, a Steerable Barrel cannot be aimed and rotated, because it always faces a single direction. Most Steerable Barrels have a timer when entered, ranging between one to five seconds, and when the timer reaches zero, the Steerable Barrel blasts the Kongs out automatically and returns to its original location.
