A Bristles is a hedgehog enemy appearing in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. It has spiky quills that injure Dixie and Kiddy Kong when touched. They can be considered the replacement of Spinies from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. According to Dixie Kong's Photo Album, Bristles are categorized under the "Terrorfirma Tuff Guys" enemy class.

Summary

To defeat a Bristles, Dixie or Kiddy must roll into it from the front, as its top and rear are protected by its quills. Unlike Spinies, Bristles are immune to Team-Up throws, and doing so even injures the Kong thrown. The Kongs can alternatively defeat Bristles by throwing a barrel or Steel Keg at it, or by having Squawks spit a coconut at it.

In the level Konveyor Rope Klash, some Bristles curl up and hurtle themselves toward the Kongs. They are more hazardous, as the Kongs cannot defeat them by themselves. They can either defeat these Bristles with a Barrel or attack them when they assume their usual form.

Bristles most often appear in waterfall levels (such as Tracker Barrel Trek) and jungle levels (such as Konveyor Rope Klash). Bristles appear in more levels in Donkey Kong Land III than in Donkey Kong Country 3.

In the Game Boy Advance port, Bristles are featured in the Cranky's Dojo minigame, where Cranky Kong's objective is to deflect 30 of them as they appear out from the left and right sides of the screen. He loses at the game if a Bristles hits him.
