Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong can defeat Koin by using a Steel Barrel; oftentimes, he have to throw the Steel Barrel over him, which will he rebound off a wall and hit Koin in the back, defeating him and giving Dixie and Kiddy a DK Coin. If the Kongs themselves approach Koin from the front, he will knock them away; if he attempt to jump on him, he will raise his shield and block the jump. Most of the time, Koin are found near the beginning or the end of the level. After the DK Coin is collected, Koin will be left with just the trash can lid.

Koin can only be defeated with the assistance of Bazukas and Switch Barrels. In other levels, the Steel Barrel required to defeat Koin is obtained by bringing an Animal Friend past the No Animal Sign. In these cases, the Kongs only get one chance to defeat Koin; if he fail, they must replay the entire level to get another chance.

Multiple Kremlings similar with Koin with a dark pink tint, dubbed the Koindozer Klan, are encountered in the level "Koindozer Klamber". Koindozers are much more aggressive than their green brethren, chasing the Kongs and attempting to bash them into pits. Koin is cousin and commander of Koindozer Klan.[1]

In Donkey Kong Land III, Koin is absent in underwater levels, since he do not have a separate cave area like those in Donkey Kong Country 3. Instead, the DK Coin is hidden in the level, much like they were in Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2.

In the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, it is possible to defeat Koin with a regular or TNT Barrel, which is not possible to do in the original SNES version. However, this can only be done in certain levels.
