Director’s Notes
I LIVE YET AGAIN
Not sure what it is with me and getting sick in February, that's literally the second year in a row now... Anyways, college is as soul-sucking and free time-eating as always! Nothing new there. I'm currently knee-deep in rehearsals for our spring musical, which is Pippin! I get to pay with a yoga ball during a dance break so I am THRIVING. Also, I play Theo (aka a little boy with a duck) and if this character is not the very essence of my personality I don't know what is.
We have a new section this month! WildWario joins us with New Articles! And if you want to write a cool new Pipe Plaza section too, them WORRY NOT because you absolutely can! Just head over to the sign up page to get started!
Have a good month, and try not to get rained out~

Poll Committee Discussion
Written by: Hooded Pitohui (talk)
Hello, readers of The 'Shroom, and welcome to a new edition of Poll Committee Discussion. This month, I, Hooded Pitohui, the chair of the previous committee, brought down to a lowly minion under Ray Trace's command loyal ally to Ray Trace and among his most loyal minions, am here to analyze our latest polls.
The News
There's little to report on as far as Poll Committee news goes. We continue to craft and run polls, and now regularly include, as we began doing a few months ago, relevant images in the main page poll. There aren't any major projects to discuss, but we'll keep humming along and tackle them as they come up.

Analysis
The Animal Crossing series has often included Mario-themed furniture and clothing. Do you like seeing these kinds of items appear?
Timmy and Tommy might want to buy some more furniture themed after the red-capped plumber, as there is definitely demand for it. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised that we didn't get more responses in the "I have no opinion" category, as I expected that many of our visitors would be exclusively Mario fans and have little interest in Animal Crossing. Do most of our visitors (or the subset of our visitors who vote in our polls, at least) play Animal Crossing, or are Mario fans enthusiastic about Mario content appearing in other series even when they don't play those series themselves? If I had to guess, I would guess the latter, but perhaps we can find out how many of our voters actually do play Animal Crossing. Leave it to the Poll Committee to explore such a question!
In the end, I would speculate that the reason most of our voters like these furniture items is that most of our voters are Mario fans, and Mario fans like seeing the franchise represented or referenced in other series. That latter part isn't total speculation on my part, as this poll from the previous term found that only about fifty voters opposed Mario crossing over into other series, suggesting our voters do enjoy seeing Mario outside of (or referenced outside of) his own series. That matches fairly closely the forty-seven voters who indicated that they do not like these Mario-themed items in Animal Crossing, which leads me to guess that these voters were more concerned with keeping Mario out of other series than keeping Animal Crossing "pure," for lack of a better term.
Many Mario platforming games, both 2D and 3D, have autoscrolling levels. Would you like to see more autoscrolling levels in Mario games?
Autoscrolling levels aren't popular. As a matter of fact, they're unpopular enough that they've placed in the top three in our Worst Level Concept category in the Fail Awards every year since 2015. It's not too hard to understand why people dislike them. They take away your chance to explore a level, rush you ahead, are easy to die on if you fall too far behind or try to get too far away, and oftentimes feel arbitrary, with no real justification (Fuzzy Time Mine and that one New Super Mario Bros. level with the volcanic cloud being exceptions I can pull up off the type of my head).
In light of all of that, it's not surprising to see that most folks do not want any more autoscrolling levels than we already have. Interestingly, though, there are more voters who want to keep the current amount of autoscrolling levels than there are voters who want to reduce the amount of autoscrolling levels we have. I suppose that, while disliking autoscrolling levels on the whole, people might appreciate the variety they bring to the table. After all, it is nice to have an occasional challenge crop up when you're breezing through an otherwise easy world. It might also be that people like particular autoscrollers, like those levels I cited above, that actually justify their autoscrolling nature.
Whatever the reason people want to keep a few autoscrollers around, they're likely to stick around in Super Mario platformers, so I suppose it's a good thing people don't hate them enough to want to get rid of them entirely.
Conclusion
Those two polls are all that I have to cover, but there are more on the way! Don't forget to check out the main page poll every two weeks and cast your votes, because the Poll Committee will be back here in this space next month to deliver more analyses directly to you.

Honestly, not the greatest month. Super Mario 64 came out in Europe, which is definitely a big deal, but other than that there weren’t many super important games. However, the 3DS did come out, and that’s a pretty big deal as well! Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed, and I’ll see you next month!
What's in a Campaign?
By: Mustard Machine (talk)
Welcome back, 'Shroom readers, to another What's In a Campaign? hosted by yours truly, Mustard Machine. Last month, we looked at the fun-but-not-great robot, Mighty Mouse. This month, in honor of 'Shroom Mafia 4 co-host and Shroom Director Ninja Squid, we're going back to series 3 (we'll never escape) and looking at the first appearance of a series staple, Firestorm.
The team, but not the robot, made their first appearance on the robot combat scene in Series 2, with Groundhog. Groundhog was a very mediocre robot, with special wheels that the team called "Omniwheels," which were wheels that had metal rollers in them, allowing them to skid sideways. It did okay, managing to make it through the trial rounds before falling in the arena round. In this series, Team Firestorm would debut its iconic design, the signature red back, yellow front, with a wedge low to the ground. Built by classmates Alex Mordue and Graham Bone. Firestorm weighs 67.9kg, so it is not taking full advantage of the weight limit. Its wedge is made of hardened aluminum, and the robot itself is powered by two 36v motors. For weapons, Firestorm has a T-shaped flipping arm at the front that can both flip robots and allow Firestorm to self right. At the back, Firestorm has a pneumatic spike because its Series 3, so why not! Firestorm also has one of the more interesting weapon ideas from Series 3, that being the conveyor belt. This was an idea that was only really tried by a handful of robots in Series 3. but the basic idea is that you'd put a conveyor belt on the front of your robot, and, when a robot drove up your wedge, the conveyor belt would snag them pulling them up and allowing you easier control of them. In addition, some teams would use chainsaw chains on the conveyors, with the idea being that the chains would snag stuff in the weak underbelly of a robot, ripping it apart. Now, this idea never really worked and only one other robot (Anorakaphobia) with a conveyor belt won a fight, but it's a neat little idea and I'll probably never get to talk about it again until 2039 when we get that sweet Forklift's Revenge Spotlight.
As a reminder, all pictures are sourced from the fantastic Robot Wars Wiki. And if you'd like to watch any of these fights a video will be posted and time stamps in the section.
Qualifying through the gauntlet, Firestorm was placed in Heat O, where it was placed up against fellow Robot Wars: Metal Mayhem star Crasha Gnasha. This fight (1:09) is over before it begins, with Firestorm charging at Crasha, ramming it before smoke suddenly starts pouring out of Crasha. Crasha then tips over, immobilized, sending Firestorm on to the second round.
In the second round, Firestorm comes up against a higher class competitor, taking on fellow flipper, Facet, the sequel bot to Series 2's Semi-Finalist G.B.H. Starting the fight 3:53) on the offensive, Firestorm manages to catch the side of Facet, pushing it around while failing to get under it. Facet gets away and attempts a mighty flip, but is just a little too slow and Firestorm drives away to safety. Firestorm manages to get under Facet from its backside, but is on able to take advantage because it basically drives Facet off of itself. The two robots clash in the middle of the arena, with Facet getting a flip in, sending Firestorm up and over, but Firestorm immediately manages to self right and Facet fails to take advantage of the situation. Firestorm goes back on the attack, ramming into Facet, pushing it back, and getting under it. Finally, near the arena wall, Firestorm gets its lifter under Facet, sending it on its side. Facet can't self right, so Firestorm wins and moves onto the next round.
In the Heat final, Firestorm faces off against the Irish bot, Diotoir, and, honestly, this fight (7:03) was never going to go Diotoir's way. Firestorm charges in but can't get under Diotoir fully on the initial charge, so it instead pushes it around a little bit.
Then, on the next charge, they get under Diotoir and send it over. Diotoir can't self right, so they get counted out, sending Firestorm onto its first of many Series-Semi Finals. Despite winning its heat so far, Firestorm's run hasn't been any more impressive then something like a Blade or a Pitbull. Its first round and Heat final match-ups were against robots that it could never lose to, and, while Facet is an impressive robot and probably would have been a Heat finalist in another Heat, the fact that it couldn't self right was always going to be its downfall. Luckily, the Semi-Finals oftentimes bring out the best in a robot, and this Semi-Final is no different.
Placed in Semi-Final 1, Firestorm's first match-up is against a previously-covered robot, Pitbull, who got here by scoring a shock upset over Behemoth. The fight (11:02) doesn't start out very well for Firestorm, because they almost immediately find themselves in the jaws of Pitbull, who drives them around before accidentally ending up on the floor spikes. Pitbull lets go of Firestorm, who charges at Pitbull, bouncing off the jaws of the dog bot. Following another charge, Firestorm finally manages to get under Pitbull, but only briefly.
Pitbull attempts to escape, but accidentally drives over the arena spike, which sends Pitbull up and over. Pitbull is unable to self right, and, once again, Firestorm moves on.
In the second round of the Semi-Final, Firestorm faces off against reigning champion, Panic Attack, in what would be the first of five times they would face off. Firestorm starts off the fight (14:23) by getting slightly under Panic Attack, enough to drive it around but not quite enough to flip it. Firestorm drives Panic Attack into the CPZ, where SGT. Bash gets its claw on the weapon of Panic Attack. Firestorm manages to get under Panic Attack again and is just barely not able to fully flip over the Welsh bot, sending it into the wall instead. Attempting to go on the offensive, Panic Attack accidentally drives up the wedge of Firestorm, who fires their weapon just a little too late as Panic Attack manages to drive off. Panic Attack briefly manages to get its lifting spikes under Firestorm, but a lack of control caused Panic Attack to drive back into the CPZ. Once again, Firestorm manages to get under Panic Attack, but it still isn't able to flip the machine over, and to make matters worse, a panel would bend on Firestorm, making its wedge less effective. Luckily for Firestorm, this would end up not mattering, as Panic Attack goes over the arena spike, which bounces Panic Attack up and straight onto Firestorm's wedge.
This time, Firestorm would take advantage of the situation, as it quickly flips up Panic Attack onto the arena wall, but Panic Attack manages to use its self righting arms to push off the wall, putting it back on its wheels. Firestorm stays on the attack and manages to force Panic Attack to drive into the CPZ and into the lance of Sir Killalot. After this, though, Panic Attack is finally able to get some attacks in, pushing Firestorm into Sir Killlalot. There's a lot of really good cat and mouse driving from two of Robot Wars' best drivers, but Panic Attack is eventually able to get Firestorm on its forks proper before Firestorm escapes. No more attacks of significance happen, and the fight goes to the judges, who marking on Style, Control, Damage, and Aggression, rule in favor of Firestorm, sending Firestorm onto the Grand Final.
In the Grand Final, Firestorm was matched up against fellow flipper Chaos 2. The fight (18:43) starts off tentatively, with both robots sizing each other up. Chaos 2 strikes first, flipping Firestorm over and, then, before Firestorm can self right, Chaos 2 charges. Attempting to pin Firestorm to the wall, Chaos 2 accidentally throws Firestorm out of the arena.
It was a complete accident and, in fact, George Francis, builder of Chaos 2, was worried he was going to get disqualified for it. But he wasn't! Instead, this fight established for the first time that throwing your opponent out of the arena would be considered a KO, something that would become a fan favorite way to end fights. This wasn't supposed to be the end of Firestorm, because there was supposed to be a third place playoff against fellow Grand Final loser Steg-O-Saw-Us, but, sadly, Steg-O-Saw-Us was too heavily damaged in their fight against Hypno Disc and were unable to fight in the playoff. Officially, Firestrom and Steg-O-Saw-Us finished joint 3rd place, but most people consider Firestorm to be the true 3rd place robot.
This was a good debut for the Firestorm team. After starting in Series 2 with the mediocre machine Groundhog, Firestorm is a significant improvement. Later series' iterations of Firestorm would get even better! In Series 4, they get rid of the conveyor belt, pneumatic Spike, and the T-bar flipper, replacing all of that with a standard front hinge flipper, which allows Firestorm to flip robots easier and quicker. Eventually, Firestorm would even add a strip of metal onto the wedge, making it even easier for it to get under robots. Of all the robots that have ever participated in Robot Wars, Firestorm was one of the most successful robots, picking up 33 wins throughout the various series. While they never managed to win the main series championship, Firestorm would go on to finish 3rd place two more times while also never failing to win its heat. Firestorm would also participate in both Extreme series, where they would pick up their only televised tournament win in Extreme 2's Commonwealth Carnage. Firestorm is a legend of the sport and, while it never returned for the modern series, there are people that think Firestorm could still be successful today with a few upgrade. That's all for this month. Join us next month when we cover another robot.
Forum Update
Written by: Hooded Pitohui (talk)
Hello, all of you readers of The 'Shroom! Awards season rapidly approaches, and, of course, the hip and happening place to be during Awards season is the forum, so let's get right to it and ensure you know all the news from the forum so you don't miss out on any of the fun coming in a couple of months.
News
We have a few new boards on the Super Mario Boards. On the public front, everyone can check out the Mario Awards XVI board, which will host almost everything Awards-related on the forum this year. Of particular note, right now, are the General Information, Tournaments, and Suggestion Box threads. In General Information, you'll find an all-new overview of what Awards even consists of and how you can get involved. Anyone joining the celebrations for the first time this year or who has simply been curious about this whole Awards business in general in the past should take a look. In the Tournaments thread, you'll not only find a new guide to hosting Awards tournaments, but also folks gauging interest for tournaments ranging from Wario's Woods matches to Mario Kart: Double Dash!! time trials to a second Scribble tournament. You will also find folks providing some information on upcoming games like Awards Killing Game: Odyssey. As for the Suggestion Box, you can use it to drop any thoughts about the Awards that you would like the Awards Committee to see. We appreciate all suggestions!
Unfortunately, I can't show most of you the Awards Staff Board for this year, but rest assured that it exists and the Awards Committee (you can find a list of members here) not only has access to it, but has started to use it to discuss Awards-related matters.
That's it as far as the big news goes, but worry not, because we'll look at some individual threads and posts shortly.
Re-Threading Old Ground
Assistance provided by: Power Flotzo (talk)
Starting this month, Power Flotzo is selecting the old threads that should be covered in this section, and, for his first pick, we'll be highlighting the "what happened when uniju cut off his earlobe and replaced it with donkey kong" thread from October of 2009. To tell you the truth, there's not much to this thread, at least not within the thread itself. Bad jokes, a few puns, and, eventually, a smattering of posts from 2016. If anything, take it as a good reminder that Mindless Junk has always been as mindless as the name implies. While there certainly has been a lot of great content in Mindless Junk over the years, there's always been threads of this type mixed in, too.

Thread of the Month
NEW King of Forums MB!! - The legendary game series returns with a new entry! With Roserade as the game's director, King of Forums MB promises to be a thrilling addition to the series famed for having teams of three fighters compete in the King of Forums tournament. Roserade has, so far, announced the inclusion of three teams, providing a full profile for one of those teams, and promises the weekly announcement of new teams until all fifteen teams in the tournament are revealed. Will your favorite community character make the cut? What team will they end up on, and who else will be on their team? The only way to find out is to watch this space.

Forum Games
- Sign-ups have opened for 'Shroom Mafia 4! An ambitious game, 'Shroom Mafia 4 will bring with it some new mechanics such as Quest Actions and the ability to fill up a Team Gauge. You can read more about these mechanics here and jump into the forum thread to read the full rules and secure a slot as a player or replacement.
- World of Plight Mafia, a game based on Magolor04726's Palette Swap section and co-hosted by Magolor and RubberLuigi, began on February 28th, and is currently in progress (as of this article's writing). A fairly standard game, this game has nevertheless had some interesting moments, such as the lynching of a spectator on night one, the successful removal of the Reporter (cop) by the Bomber (Lounge thread), and a tense debate between Shoey and Fun With Despair in the final phase of the game. Some characters in this game have included Kay Faraday (Roserade), Kolorado (Waluigi Time), and a dead horse (InsaneBlathers). The game will have ended by the time of this article's publication.
- Murder Party, a new game hosted by Reverse Input, has opened sign-ups and is expected to begin by the time this article is published. A new game with a new concept, this first full is designed to be relatively simple, with little on top of its core mechanics. In a game where everyone can murder, though, chaos is to be expected.
Interactive 'Shroom Threads
- Voting will once again be open this month for Strategy Wing's Mach Speed Mayhem, written by Superchao, so go vote!
- Nominations are once again open for Waluigi Time's Mushroom Kingdom Smackdown. A system where Waluigi Time offers a few nominees which you can vote for with reactions remains in place, but you can continue to offer up your own nominations, as always!
- You can also vote in Northern Verve's merit ranking to determine the order he'll cover Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's fighters, determining which fighters get covered in his 'Shroom section!
- Flygon64 is looking for suggestions on what villains that Vid should interview next in The Big Cheeses of the Mushroom Kingdom.
- You can suggest a guest for Andrew Trego to interview Long John Spaghetti's new section, Trego's Terrific Talk Show.
That's it for the news and highlights from the forum this month, but, with the Awards board around and tournaments already being discussed, with mafia games in the works for later this year, with the second chapter of Marioboards Investigations on the way, and with all of the usual activity on the forums, there will be much to cover in the coming months. Check here every month to catch up on the highlights! Until then, maybe you can can snack on a Power Moon.
