Images[edit]

Hello, Lastro. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly use the aboutfile template. What you were doing looks like this, and it is an inconvenience for other users to fix up the template. It is simple to learn how to format it correctly. The pre-loaded syntax is shown below.

Just replace the necessary parts with that corresponding information, and remove the entire line for the parameter(s) you don't use. Please consider the above information before uploading more files. If you continue using aboutfile incorrectly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

Hello, Lastro. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly categorize the file. It's simple to learn how to do so. Just search for the correct category by starting with the following groups:

Images Audio/video files

When uploading, copy the full title of the category and insert it in square brackets into the summary text box below the aboutfile template, replacing the uncategorized template entirely. If you're using the upload function from the text editor, simply add the category link to the description. For example, files related to the game Super Mario World would use:

or

Please consider the above information before uploading more files. Keep in mind that some files can belong to multiple categories. Do not put images into the media files category, or vice versa. If you continue uploading files without categorizing them correctly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

Additionally, you should avoid punctuation in the images, aside from the extension.

Also, I don't think we consider Warp Cannon and ! Pipe as items, so they shouldn't use the item infobox. We don't have one for Warp Pipe, so I'm going off of that. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:52, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

When you upload images, type

I always do this normally. For which image did I miss that step? 1JUST1 (talk) 10:26, December 29, 2020 (EST)

Yes! It is what I wanted, but I figured out how to do so. I just searched through the wiki for a page that had one and changed it to fit. Obviously, it was quick considering that the Mario page has one. But thanks for the help! 1JUST1 (talk) 10:55, December 29, 2020 (EST)

Conversation with Alex95[edit]

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your message! About the Cannon Pipe and the ! Pipe, I had check the ? Panel status and it was actually classified as an item, so I decided to do the same with them. Also, how can I have an user page, as I don't have any at this moment. And finally, I've remove the background on a picture of Mega Sledge Bro but I didn't do well with the hammer as it's quite difficult at this part. So go see the result and feel free to delete it or to make it better! Oh, I almost forgot; I'm new to this website so that's why I'm not familiarize with it. Now, I'm focusing on French translation and making pages better! Lastly, I'm french so that's why they might be some grammatical or syntactic errors. Have a nice evening (it's 9:45 PM for me)

Sincerely,

Justin

The ? Panel is classified as an item? That's odd, the player can't use it as one. May have to go over that later...
Welcome to the site, though! Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:22, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Thanks. Oh, also, how do you replace your sign with an image. I have one but I don't know how to replace it. And for my user page, I think you need to activate it. But anyways, I love editing on this website!

You will be able to create your userpage once you are autoconfirmed, which happens automatically after you have had your account for seven days and have made ten edits. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:31, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Oh nice. I'm now changing and reviewing all my uploaded files! So, do you know how to change the sign to an image? (I'm sorry if I'm a little insistent, but I love being edited and tidy)

You mean change a link? You replace the name that's there with the new file name, if you think your file is a better version. There's several other steps involved, though, so what are you trying to do? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:39, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

I misspoke. In fact, I'd like to know how you changed your signature because now it's an image of your name in a Mario font. Also, while I was reviewing my files, I had another question: can you change the name of a file's page (example: change "File:NSMBWSledgeBroModel" to "File:NSMBW Sledge Bro Model")? If so, how? And I almost forgot, thank you very much, I mean, thank you a thousand times for your help.

Ah, user templates. Once you can make your userpage, you can also make a signature page that you can use instead of just basic font. Mine is at User:Alex95/sig, for example. You can learn more userspace stuff at MarioWiki:Userspace.
To move a file (or any page, for that matter), there will be a "move" tab at the top of the page once you are autoconfirmed. After moving the page, you should fix any links that lead to the original image and mark the original file name for deletion (done by putting delete on the redirect).
You're welcome, no problem ^^ Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:49, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Ok, I understand. But I'm not sure if I have understood the second part. Actually, I would just like to know how to rename a page (because I saw that "File:NSMB2!Pipe" became "File:NSMB2 Exclamation Pipe").

As I said, you have to use the "move" tab and it will let you rename the file. It should not be available to you yet. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:02, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Also, you should sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically create your user links and timestamp. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:20, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Okey-dokey! I have a question: is that you who decided to delete the yellow ! switch? I understand you but there was actually the same picture but with a bg before and it wasn't mean to be deleted 1JUST1 (talk) 18:23, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

It got switched back because artwork has a priority. Looking at both the cropped screenshot and the extracted sprite, we should just use the screenshot, as the crop looks pretty rough around the edges. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:29, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Oh... But I can redo the crop, though.

Ehh, the screenshot's fine as it is. A crop isn't necessary. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:38, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

Oh, I've finished one... 1JUST1 (talk) 18:41, June 15, 2020 (EDT) In fact, I prefer non-background images... Look:https://www.mariowiki.com/File:NSMBW_Yellow_!_Switch.png

...Why did you reupload it after I already deleted it and said it wasn't necessary? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:48, June 15, 2020 (EDT)

As it was written "Poor crop" so I wanted to improve it, I though this was the issue. And sorry for not answering you directly, it was nearly 1 AM so I went sleeping.

Please don't upload cropped versions of existing images with poor transparency. Converting jpgs to png in particular for the sake of cropping and adding transparency is prohibited. Read MarioWiki:Image use policy before making further uploads.

Hi Alex. I wonder if you could move the page Skull switch to Skull Switch. I know it's a small change, but it's written like that, and basically everything has caps on their names. Check out this if you don't believe me (I replaced added the Skull Switch on this page). Thanks! 1JUST1 (talk) 18:07, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Our source shows it in lowercase, so unless you can prove otherwise, there's no reason to move it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:33, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Go here and you will see of what I'm talking about. Also, could I have a screenshot as I don't have the guide, please? Thanks!

Image proof. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:41, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Ok, I see this is right. But wait, did you go there? They are my proofs but I have one more : the writter just didn't know : he has written "long jump" while you have written it "Long Jump".1JUST1 (talk) 18:48, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Yes, I saw the conversation on Doc's page. She has the same points I do. And while "Long Jump" is used more consistently, in this case, the writer is referring to a jump that is long, not necessarily the usual Long Jump. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:50, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Oh, so I think it will stay as it is... but it feels so weird for me...

Every now and then we get names that don't sound proper because they are being used as a general description rather than a noun. But it's not up to us to correct, as we could end up being wrong and it would be inaccurate, so we use whatever the source provides. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:55, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

In my opinion, this switch just is unnamed, and the author described it as a skull switch. It's like the final ! Switch from NSMBW, I called it the large ! Switch on the wiki as it's basically that, but it's not officially named like that

Yes, exactly. The switch is unnamed, but we are given a description that works as a title, so we use that. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:02, June 18, 2020 (EDT)

Bruh, right now I wanna ask Nintendo how is this thing called...

Don't convert jpgs to pngs and apply transparency. You were just reminded about this. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 09:46, June 19, 2020 (EDT)

Ok, but why though? I am not trying to change my statements at all. 1JUST1 (talk) 08:20, December 29, 2020 (EST)

Doesn't matter if you're just capitalising or changing the format of certain words, you're still editing comments. Stop doing this after they've been reverted multiple times. The only time you can do so is to fix broken coding, otherwise just leave them alone. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:49, February 28, 2021 (EST)

This is absolutely ridiculous. How fixing typos is a warnable offense is beyond me. Like, it makes the content more readable... My signature. 05:53, March 1, 2021 (EST)

Re: Question about a new page: secret passages[edit]

Hi, so, right out of the gate, I just wanted to check whether you were familiar with the situation with the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia- basically, it takes an awful lot of stuff from the wiki, including unofficial names, as well as making a number of other stupid mistakes, so it's not necessarily the best thing to take a look at at the major guide- there was a big proposal not long after the translation to prevent citing it for names, and you can see the sort of mistakes we're looking at from our article. I think I know what you're talking about (I can't say I've ever heard the term "layer 0" used before though, so I might be thinking of the wrong thing), though personally I'd lean towards not creating it- it's relatively common feature in platformer games so it's not necessarily something Mario-specific, and as it doesn't really affect gameplay in a significant way, I don't think it really needs to be mentioned- if I've got the right thing, it's pretty much just an area hidden by a wall. I'm not sure though, so it might be worth bringing it up on an appropriate mainspace talk page, and see if anyone can help you there? Pretty much everyone on this wiki should be trustworthy, so you shouldn't always need to go to an administrator to check- you can always bring it up on a talk page, or the Boards or Discord if you're there, and usually you'll find someone who can help you. BBQ Turtle (talk) 17:40, December 28, 2020 (EST)

Thanks for the information. To be sure about the subject, did you take a look at the World 1-1 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii) article? It mentions it, the secret area reached when you stay on the Warp Pipe of the Rolling Hills. 1JUST1 (talk) 17:43, December 28, 2020 (EST)
Yes, I did take a look, but things can be a bit hard to identify when there's not necessarily a concrete name for them. And I didn't want to say that an article shouldn't be created just because I'm getting mixed up. I didn't get the encyclopedia (due to plagiarism mentioned above), so I can't check what it says in there either. BBQ Turtle (talk) 17:47, December 28, 2020 (EST)
Moreover, I got the encylopedia in French. This means that there is an additionnal layer of translation if it was translated from the english version, but it implies that it has been translated directly from the japanese version. Something funny is that the mistake with the ? Box picture being the Propeller Box was actually chnaged and corrected. Anyways, I do not know. It is mention as Passage secret in my book, which translates into Secret passage (they just swaped two words?). 1JUST1 (talk) 17:54, December 28, 2020 (EST)
According to this, only the English version is in range of SMBE block, the other languages (probably including French too) are fine, but if I were you, I would still proceed with caution. Superbound (talk) 02:49, December 29, 2020 (EST)

Navigation templates/categories[edit]

Nice work on the articles. In the future, keep in mind that new articles should also have a navigation template and category at the bottom of the page (see MarioWiki:Navigation templates and MarioWiki:Categories). In the case of your recent articles, the article should have:

MKAGPDX

Remember you can always look at other similar articles to see which are the correct navtemplates and categories to use. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:40, January 3, 2021 (EST)

To reiterate the above point, you're still forgetting to include these on your new articles, so you should try to remember to add these in future. I think it might also be worth taking some time to read over the Manual of Style, as there are a number of things in there that you seem to be missing out- at the moment, other users are having to go back and fix various things in the articles for you, so it'd be worth just going through the edit history and seeing what people are changing to pick up on some of what you're missing. Make sure that you're making use of the show preview button as well- it's worth taking a quick look over the article before saving it, as there have been some small errors in there that you'd probably spot if you have a quick read through it all before saving. Just a tip for the future, if you come across another article that has a game identifier, you should add Template:Italic title to italicise it at the top of the page (For example Magnet (Mario Kart Arcade GP DX) makes the title at the top of the page appear as Magnet (Mario Kart Arcade GP DX).). And there's no need to keep adding in your edit summaries to bring it up on the discussion page if you don't think the article needs to be created- if you're picking it up off a template or it has lots of valid red links, creating it won't be an issue. You're creating some missing articles and adding missing information at the moment, which is always good. :) BBQ Turtle (talk) 06:19, January 5, 2021 (EST)

Hi! Recently, I have been trying to fill in the database regarding Mario Kart Arcade GP DX items. When I got the email noticing me that someone messaged me I rapidely knew that it was about templates beacause I remembered that I forgot to put them. I went through the Manual of Style, and I think that my next article will be better. By the way, do you think talking about The Legend Of The Colored Yoshis is something useful (see the Super Mario World instruction booklet)? Thanks for every advice! 1JUST1 (talk) 13:21, January 5, 2021 (EST)

Please stop forgetting navigation templates / categories on the Super Mario Wiki. This isn't a warning, and it's possible that you made a mistake by accident or without realizing it; this is simply a reminder for your information. If the action continues, then a warning will be issued. Thanks for reading and keep contributing.
If you feel this reminder was undeserved, you may appeal it.

You still forgot this for World 3 (Super Mario Bros. Special) even after you were just reminded again about it. Again, look at other articles if you're not sure which ones to add (like World 2 (Super Mario Bros. Special), which uses the same navigation template and category required). Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:18, January 6, 2021 (EST)

Also, regarding File:SMBS World 3-2.png: "Did not wanted to rename."

You should move the page if there's a mistake in the file name, after that you just need to mark the old file name for deletion. Don't upload the same image again to solve the mistake as this unnecessarily takes up space on the wiki server. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:22, January 6, 2021 (EST)

Hi there! Regarding the templates, I am sorry. I was tired and did not think about them. Concerning the image, it was dumb. I just did not wanted to rename it for some odd reasons. My signature. 05:22, January 7, 2021 (EST)

Item infobox descriptions[edit]

I know you voted against it, but the proposal regarding descriptions in item infoboxes is very likely to decide not to have physical descriptions in them (after a suggestion I made, there was an option added to use the parameter solely for in-game descriptions for uncommon items). So there's probably no point putting these descriptions for any more item infoboxes you make. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8

Ok. I voted against it because it does include non-physical apsects such as their function that was explained briefly. Removind the physical description is not any problem. My signature. 16:29, January 7, 2021 (EST)

RE: Converting jpgs to pngs[edit]

Those were not taken from jpgs. The Yoshi one was originally, but has since been replaced with a crop from a png scan, and while it would be preferable to have just kept the background, the others are acceptable because pixel-accurate cropping was easy for those. And keep in mind that something that went against a current rule might have been done before the rule was established and it was overlooked; if not, well, there's no point warning someone about it now - what was done was done, and they probably know now. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 05:24, January 11, 2021 (EST)

Turns out the Yoshi one was actually jpg but the image URL specifies it being a png, so I wouldn't fault the user for that. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:04, January 11, 2021 (EST)

RE: File deleted + adding pages for non-released games[edit]

Alright. It might be better to create a personal sandbox and keep your work there.

And what Bowser's Fury article is this? Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:12, January 13, 2021 (EST)

I don't think there is enough information for those to give them an article just yet. We've only seen their appearance but not their function. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:31, January 13, 2021 (EST)

Subjective information and unofficial terms[edit]

When writing articles, try to make sure that you're not including subjective information or language, like whether things are "fair" or "logical" like you did on the White Cat Mario article- that whole second article wasn't really necessary, as it was pretty much only justifying the form's appearance. Additionally, when you're writing articles, make sure you're using official terms for items and such- the correct term is "Super Bell", not "Cat Bell", so even if the links are coming up blue, they might be leading to a redirect, so it's worth searching the term or following a link as well to check that you're using the right one. BBQ Turtle (talk) 12:36, January 13, 2021 (EST)

Yeah, I was debating on wheter or not including the second part. For the Super Bell, it is a mistake. I do not know why, but I keep calling it "Cat Bell". I make sure to use official names for things, but this is just a common mistake I do. My signature. 12:40, January 13, 2021 (EST)
In general, please avoid padding on articles for the sake of extending the article length. It's fine if the only known information is small but still enough for an article, but don't fill it with unnecessary and unrelated fluff. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 05:58, January 14, 2021 (EST)

Also, remember to add the following above the navigation templates and categories when you're adding references:

Because IP addressees change over time (mine for example changed multiple times last year), sometimes even without original offender's input. This may cause actual good faith IPs unable to make edits or accidentally block already registered users (happened to be as well), which we don't want. Superbound (talk) 14:56, January 21, 2021 (EST)

Screenshots and renders[edit]

Both screenshots and renders have a place on this wiki, so in the case of the Fire Piranha image, it's best to upload as a separate file. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:18, September 22, 2021 (EDT)

Yes, though the screenshot was not in a very good quality and it was used in every page as the primary image, due to the lack of sprite. I so suggest to re-upload it with a different filename. Also remember to sign! My signature. 18:23, September 22, 2021 (EDT)

Cut-and-paste move[edit]

Hey, whenever there's an obstructing redirect in the way of an upcoming page move, please don't perform what is known as a cut-and-paste move. That type of move is undesirable because it splits page histories. Instead, tag the obstructing redirect with delete and wait for an admin to delete the page. Thanks!
