- “We've come a long way, you and me... We've seen a bunch of different kingdoms... I mean, sure, we got shot down and stuff along the way... But think of all the HATS! This trip really was amazing. Thank you, Mario. It's been an honor walking a mile on your head.”
- —Cappy, Super Mario Odyssey
Long Journey's End is the sole story mission of the Darker Side in Super Mario Odyssey, and is the final mission of the game. The objective is to collect the final Multi Moon.
The only checkpoint in the entire Darker Side, excluding the Odyssey and its Checkpoint Flag, is the Warp Pipe which initially leads into the underground area. This is extremely early on, meaning dying at any point results in starting the level largely from scratch. Themes from previous locations of the game play in different parts of the level.
Layout[edit]
The mission begins on the Moon, with various characters cheering Mario on and offering words of encouragement. Pauline and the band play "Jump Up, Super Star! here. Mario must move along, then capture a frog and jump across platforms to enter a Warp Pipe, which serves the only checkpoint for most of the level. The Warp Pipe leads to an area with many Goombas and a Yoofoe, where "Fossil Falls" plays. Defeating the Yoofoe will spawn a Life-Up Heart. After defeating or bypassing the Yoofoe, Mario must jump across sinking platforms and climb sinking poles. Soon after, Mario must Long Jump across hills moving across the lava, then capture a Lava Bubble to move across the lava. This leads to a segment where the player leaps from pool to pool while watching out for Moonsnakes.
After taking a lava cannon to the next area, the sky turns from blue to orange and "Tostarena: Ruins" plays. Mario must capture an Uproot and climb a tower with movable covers while avoiding Burrbos and blocks that push out from the walls. The next segment features freezing water that falls and rises from the ceiling, as well as some Fuzzies to avoid. Next, Yoshi will be encountered, and Mario must capture him so that he can use Yoshi's tongue to ride up a pair of conveyor belt walls while avoiding Fuzzies.
Mario must then hit a P Switch and follow the flower path, at which point the sky turns green and "Steam Gardens" plays. Rocks are in the way, and Pulse Beams are available to remove them. Mario can optionally jump from the flower path to a large rock with the Sphynx. Solving the Sphynx's riddle grants access to another Life-Up Heart; answering four additional questions correctly will grant Mario many coin piles, which can only be done if Sphynx's questions have been answered in all other kingdoms first. If an incorrect answer is given, Sphynx will not allow Mario to retry until the area is reset. A second flower path leads Mario from this detour to the main path. In the next area, Mario must throw Cappy at a Scarecrow and climb up an area where blocks push out of a wall. The blocks are the only platforms available, and can push Mario off depending on their position.
Afterwards, Mario must capture Glydon and ride him into the updrafts while avoiding Urban Stingbies to reach the next area. The sky turns dark brown and "Forgotten Isle 2" plays during this segment.
After landing as Glydon, Mario must launch himself across lava using Volbonan Poles to reach the next Warp Pipe. The sky turns pink and "Mount Volbono" plays during this segment.
Next, Mario enters a new area consisting of platforms floating above a fog-covered abyss, where "Bowser's Castle 1" plays. Mario must ride a platform with a Pulse Beam on it while fending off Burrbos that leap on the platform. Other Pulse Beams float nearby, and can set off a chain reaction with the platform's Pulse Beam. When the platform stops, Mario must capture a Pokio and stick to Wooden pendulums to reach a higher area. Mario can then enter an 8-bit section, which has a spiral shape. In it, Mario has to avoid Barrels and hit four ? Blocks below the original Donkey Kong to reach the next area. Mario travels towards a castle-like structure, which has a painting depicting Mario having captured Bowser.
Going into the painting puts the player in control of the captured Bowser, leading into a long section with boulders firing out from holes. "Honeylune Ridge: Caves" plays during during this area. Mario as Bowser drops into the area, landing in front of a sturdy wall. There are six layers in that wall, after which there is a series of staircases where the boulders first appear. Next are two bridges that boulders rush across. There is only one source for the rolling rocks, but the first bridge goes left, some stairs go up to the second bridge, which in turn goes right. This means the boulders cascade down both bridges. Following this is a narrow tunnel to the right, which is open to a pit facing the screen. The space is so tight Bowser cannot jump over anything. Boulders roll in from the left, while blocks clog up the way forward. This forces the player to alternate between breaking oncoming boulders and proceeding through the blocks. Finally, some stairs lead forward to a pyramid structure with blocks and seven boulder generators at the top. These boulders have variable trajectories. After contending with all of these, Bowser can cross into a divot in the final wall, which leads to a coin ring filled drop to the next section.
When Mario arrives at the other side of the fall, he is back to normal. Mario must capture a series of spark pylons that spell "THANK YOU". After heading into one final Warp Pipe, Mario is transported back to the Moon's surface, on platforms far from where the Odyssey landed. The music switches to "Honeylune Ridge". In front of Mario is a grayscale version of the New Donk City Hall. Behind the skyscraper are numerous coin piles. Mario must capture one last frog to jump to the top of the Hall, then climb up the rest of the way to collect the Multi Moon. As he ascends, Cappy reminisces about their experiences together across the game.
