Puftups, also called Puffer Fish,[1] are enemies introduced in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. These porcupine fish[2] inhabit the waters of Crocodile Isle. Puftup's name is a reference to its ability to get "puffed up".

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest / Donkey Kong Land 2[edit]

Puftups are enemies in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Puftups puff themselves up whenever the Kongs approach them. Depending on their color, some Puftups puff themselves up until they explode and release spikes in four direction; if a blue-tinted Puftup explodes, its spikes are unleashed in every cardinal direction, and if a green-tinted Puftup explodes, its spikes are unleashed in every ordinal direction. The brown Puftups do not explode, and they deflate themselves shortly after inflating. Puftups can be defeated by Enguarde, although he is still vulnerable to Puftup's spikes. In the remake, all Puftups are brown, regardless of behavior. In the cast roll, a Puftup is categorized under the "Submerged Seadogs" category.

Puftups are also enemies in Donkey Kong Land 2. The only difference is that they never explode to attack. Puftups commonly swim up and down puffing in and out.

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

Puftups are enemies in Donkey Kong 64. They were changed to purple. Puftups are usually stationary and act more like hazards than enemies: if the active Kong approaches a Puftup, it explodes like an aquatic mine. Puftoss, the boss of Gloomy Galleon and fourth overall boss, is a large Puftup. A few mobile Puftups appear in the surrounding water during the boss fight against King Kut Out.

DK: Jungle Climber[edit]

Puftups are enemies in DK: Jungle Climber. They were changed to silver, and they inhabit the bog of Ghost Island. A deflated Puftup can be defeated from a charge attack.

  • In Banjo-Tooie, the Donkey Kong 64 Puftups were recycled into the Swellbelly enemy, which behaves nearly the same as Puftups from Donkey Kong 64: The only differences are that it is orange, has green eyes and mouth instead of red, and is fought slightly differently, swelling larger but not exploding.
