A Bero[1] (generically referred to by Nintendo Power as spook heads[2]) is an enemy in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They reside in the Pumpkin Zone's second level. Bero resemble Japanese paper lanterns and are based on the chōchin-obake, a paper lantern that comes alive on its one hundredth "birthday" in Japanese mythology. Their attack method involves them sticking out their tongues. Bero cannot be destroyed, but they can be used as platforms to step on.

Bero is seen giving bad food to Wario in volume 8 of Super Mario-kun.

Haunted lanterns with tongues sticking out

Lantern spirits appear only in the Yōkai Monastery Course. If you touch its long tongue, you will be damaged. It cannot be defeated, but it will not move on its own, so it is safe as long as you do not touch it.
