Wayaway Island is one of the major islands in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, located on the rightmost portion of the Gulchrock Sea. Its name is derivative of the term "ways away", meaning "a long distance", referencing its hard-to-reach nature. For the majority of the game, it is occupied by Bowser and his minions, who constructed a castle on it, using it as a stronghold and base of operation. Due to being a distant island even before Concordia split apart, it is not adjacent to, or on, any currents, nor does it have a Lighthouse (Mario & Luigi: Brothership), making it impossible to reach by normal means, such as the Shipshape Island's cannon, or the Return Pipe. Instead, a hidden pipe on Meeger Islet, and another opened from within the island to Mynor Islet, are the only ways to visit it.

History

Background

Prior to the game's event, Wayaway Island was a deserted island, far away from most of Concordia and thus mostly vacant of people. Sometime before the withering of the Uni-Tree, a friend of Dr. Vulko journeyed here, and brought him several of the island's specialty, Ampberries, as souvenir. Due to not being connected to the Uni-Tree, it was mostly unaffected following Zokket's attack on Concordia. After the Great Conductor's attempt to summon Concordia's potential saviors transported Bowser and his army to this island, they quickly constructed a castle on the island as a base to combat Zokket's troops.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

After infiltrating Offandon Island and escaping it with the whereabouts of a shortcut to Wayaway Island, the Mario Bros. venture here to obtain some Ampberries. On the way, they encounter Buddy, who intends to make up with Bowser Jr. after their fight. Entering the castle, the Bros. are immediately confronted with Kamek, who quickly gave orders to flood the castle with lava, blocking access to the top floor, where the storage room for the Ampberries are located. The Bros. must navigate the castle with Balloon Elevators, using the Bros. Move Fire & Ice to control their altitude, and reach the top floor of the castle. Once there, they come face-to-face with Bowser, who refuses to reason with the Mario Bros., and instead summon his legion of minions to attempt to best them.

When Bowser inevitably falls in battle, the Extension Corps jump in to kidnap Bowser Jr. while the king is still immobile from the battle, planning to use him as a hostage to deter the Bowser army's further aggression. Mario and Luigi attempted to give chase, but after inflicting Glohm on Buddy, who attempted to hinder the kidnapping attempt, the Extension Corps fled with their captive. After instructing nearby minions to fetch an Ampberry in order to cure Buddy, a Goomba accidently let slip the location of the Ampberries stash, allowing the Bros. to finally retrieve their objectives.

After finalizing the plan to upgrade Shipshape Island with either Technikki or Adaphane, the Mario Bros. are tasked to obtain a Part of Bowser's Airship to fully construct the upgrade. Though it is seen in the same storage room as the Ampberries, it is blocked off by various items, and can only be obtained by going through the previously closed side door of the castle, and traversing through its airship hangar to reach the storage room from an alternative exit.

Any enemies fought here has a small chance to drop a Wayaway Chain, which is used in certain side quests from the Shipshape Island's workshop.

Side Quests

Certain side quests are available on this island during certain parts of the game.

How's Bowser's Health?

Initially available after linking Jellyfish Island, this time-limited side quest entails Starlow visiting Bowser as he recovers from his injury, and bringing him a Hot Drumstick as a peace offering. Finishing it rewards the player with Bowser Spikes. This quest becomes unavailable presumably following the defeat of Zokket.

Craft Some Amped Gloves/Craft an Escalation Belt

Depending on which of the siblings mans the workshop, Billdit and Maykit will put in their respective request to make their magnum opus. Regardless of the equipment produced, the material cost remains the same, with the required 8 Wayaway Chains only obtainable through fighting enemies on this island. This quest does not have a deadline, and is always available before the end of the game.
