World 5 (New Super Mario Bros. 2)
This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible.
World 5 is the fifth normal world in New Super Mario Bros. 2. This world is located on a single large cloud, with several tall pieces of land jutting out from below the cloud. The levels here are mainly aerial levels, although some do take place on land, which are mainly cliffs or slopes. The map music is the same one played in World 7 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This world can be accessed by completing World 4-Castle or World Flower-Castle. This is also an optional world as it can be bypassed by completing World Flower-Cannon instead, leading to World 6.
There are a total of 11 levels and 4 Toad Houses that can be found here. The 11 levels include 8 levels on the main path (including the Fortress and Castle), two secret levels and the rainbow course. One of the secret levels is the world's Ghost House, which is at first obscured by clouds and can only be seen on the map when it is unlocked. Of the 4 Toad Houses, two are red and two are green. The boss of this world is Ludwig von Koopa, who is fought at the castle. Completing this world will open up World 6.
Levels
World 5-
Rainbow
To access this level, the timer must end with the two digits '5' (that is, 'x55', where 'x' can be any number) when the player reaches the flagpole of any World 5 level. Once the level is completed, it can be accessed again by satisfying the above condition once more.
The level begins with Mario on land beside a Cannon Pipe. Entering it will shoot Mario to the rainbow course. Mario will land on a yellow moving platform. Upon landing, coins will jump out from below from both sides, similar to how a Cheep-Cheep jumps. Ahead, more coins will begin to jump from the right. This is followed by a Coin Roulette Block. After that, more coins will leap out from the left, where a 100 Gold Coin will then fall. A large Coin Roulette Block then appears. This is followed by more leaping coins, before Mario will have to jump down and end the level.
World 5-1
Time Limit: 400 seconds
Coin Rush Time Limit: seconds
Mario begins on several coloured blocks below a tightrope. Coins surround most of these tightropes, allowing Mario to collect them. Mario will first have to cross an abyss by jumping on several tightropes. When Mario walks on tightropes, the rope will lower a little due to his weight and he will move slower, but it also allows him to jump to high places or objects when timed and positioned correctly. Standing on a tightrope for too long will cause Mario to drop off the rope and, in most cases, cost him a life when no platform is below it. On the third tightrope from the beginning of the level, there are several Brick Blocks and ? Blocks orbiting it. One of the ? Block contains a Super Leaf. Above this rope, there is another rope with a multi-coin Brick Block above it. Koopa Paratroopas will then appear, orbiting around several tightropes as an obstruction to Mario. The next tightrope features orbiting Brick Blocks above it, while the next one has a Gold Ring above it. There is a Koopa Troopa on that tightrope, which allows Mario to collect coins automatically by kicking it, allowing it to bounce off the ends of the tightrope. Right after that is the checkpoint. Mario can find another Super Leaf in a ? Block orbiting the next tightrope. The player can then see the second Star Coin (see below on how to collect). More Paratroopas appear, obstructing Mario on the tightrope. After crossing some more tightropes, another Gold Ring can be found, allowing Mario to execute the earlier stated trick on collecting coins automatically. A Coin Roulette Block then appears. Finally, this is followed by the flagpole.
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: There are several orbiting Brick Blocks above the tightrope just after the one where Paratroopas first appeared in the level. Mario will need to get on one of them and quickly jump to reach the Star Coin in the centre of the circling Brick Blocks.
- Star Coin 2: This Star Coin can be seen enclosed in tightropes right after the checkpoint. Mario just have to stand on the top tightrope until he falls onto the Star Coin. A more tedious method involves having Raccoon Mario to fly from the bottom tightropes to the Star Coin.
- Star Coin 3: There is a high tightrope above the yellow block after the checkpoint. Mario will have to bounce off one of the tightropes to the left or right to reach that tightrope. Mario will then have to jump around to find a hidden block, somewhere above the center of the tightrope. This will cause a Beanstalk to grow, taking Mario to a secret area. Here, Mario can find a multi-coin Brick Block above a tightrope. To collect the Star Coin, Mario must carefully bounce off the Paratroopas which are in the same orbit as the moving Star Coin. This involves careful timing and precision and is recommended to be done with Raccoon Mario.
Secret Exit
This exit is in the same secret area as the third Star Coin. Mario will have to travel to the area described above. After the Paratroopa ring, there is another tightrope on the right. Mario will have to bounce around again to find a hidden block which will grow another Beanstalk. Mario will have to travel upwards, then drop down the narrow shaft on the right. Here, Mario will also need to bounce off many Paratroopa rings to cross a gap. At the end of that will be the flagpole.
This exit unlocks World 5-Ghost House.
World 5-2
This level is notable for its many Lakitus and rainbow-colored blocks.
Completing this level's normal exit unlocks World 5-3.
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: After a structure made of orange and green blocks, there is a Gold Ring above some colored blocks. Below, there is a Star Coin, with three pipes housing Piranha Plants on each side. Wait for the Piranha Plants to go back into their pipes, and then grab the Star Coin.
- Star Coin 2: Around the checkpoint, there are some rainbow-colored blocks. Above the Purple blocks, there is a larger, pink block with a P-Switch. Get a Lakitu's Cloud, press the switch, and follow the Blue Coins up to a pipe that leads to a secret area. Inside the area are some yellow pipes containing Piranha Plants, a red Koopa Troopa, a Gold Ring, and the Star Coin. The Star Coin is directly above the yellow pipes.
- Star Coin 3: After the rainbow-colored blocks over the pit, there is a small, yellow block. Get a Lakitu's Cloud and fly directly up to a pipe, following the path of coins. In the secret area, grab another Lakitu's Cloud and fly to the right. The Star Coin is near the end of the area, at the top of the screen.
World 5-
Ghost House
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: At the second group of swinging platforms, Mario/Luigi must ride the lowest platform to lead him toward the star coin.
- Star Coin 2: In the second area, The player must climb the second pole and follow the trail of coins that leads to the second Star Coin.
- Star Coin 3: In the second area, The player must climb the third pole and climb the staircase to grab the third Star Coin.
Secret Exit
The path to the secret exit (which leads to World 5-A) starts with a small opening in the ceiling near the end of the first room, before the first door, above the right extent of the second swinging platform. An invisible block containing a Beanstalk is located directly below it. Alternately, Raccoon Mario can fly up through the opening. Through the opening and up a flight of stairs, a door leads to another room with a series of swinging platforms and ropes. At the end of this room is a yellow ? switch and a Big Boo. When the player hits the switch, four doors appear. The correct door is at the top-right, behind the Big Boo which must be lured out of the way; there is no time limit to reach the door.
World 5-3
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: At the checkpoint flag, the player should notice three Warp Pipes. The player should enter the Warp Pipe on the right to be launched into the Star Coin.
- Star Coin 2: At the checkpoint flag, the player should notice three Warp Pipes. The player should enter the Warp Pipe in the middle to be launched up to a secret area. The player should stand on the ? Block and jump up to reveal a hidden ? block containing a Mini Mushroom. The player should use the Mini Mushroom to jump across the Mini Pipes to reach a Cannon Pipe. The player should then enter the Cannon Pipe to be launched to the Star Coin.
- Star Coin 3: Before the end of the level, the player has to jump across five Warp Pipes to reach the Flagpole. If the player enters the middle Warp Pipe, they will be launched to the third Star Coin.
World 5-

- Star Coin 3: The third star coin is found floating over an abyss between two blue mushroom platforms. The player can either bounce off the Paratroopa, or use a Koopa Troopa's shell to collect it.
World 5-A
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: Before the checkpoint, the first star coin can easily be seen in the air. The player can either jump of the grassy ledge, or bounce off a Paratroopa to reach it.
- Star Coin 2: After the checkpoint, The second star coin is found on the third pillar. The player can either jump off a Paratroopa or use the springboard to reach the top of the pillar.
- Star Coin 3: Not too far from the flagpole, The star coin is easily seen in the air. The player can simply jump to get it.
Secret Exit
At the end of the level, there are two brick blocks. While the one on the left contains a coin, the one on the right contains a Beanstalk. Use the springboard found earlier in the level to make it easier to reach. This exit leads to the green Toad House and World 5-Castle, which skips 5-5 and 5-6.
World 5-5
Star Coins

- Star Coin 2: After the midpoint flag, enter into the green pipe between the two Bill Blasters to be blasted into the sky. The Star Coin is at the end of this sky area.
- Star Coin 3: At the end of this level, where the huge Bill Blaster is, the last Star Coin can be found. Jump on a Bullet Bill to make sure to survive.
World 5-6
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: Just before the checkpoint, the Star Coin is seen to the right of the spinning platforms and above spiked platforms. The player must hit the red switch to safely collect this coin.
- Star Coin 2: After the checkpoint, Mario or Luigi must find a green pipe that'll take them underground to a room with the star coin. The player needs to use a springboard to reach it.
- Star Coin 3: Just before the flagpole, the star coin is buried underneath stone blocks. The player can only collect it with the Mega Mushroom.
World 5-
Castle
This stage contains many Cannons.
At the Boss Room, Mario or Luigi must use the cannon. Then when they fight Ludwig, he hovers to a rope. Whichever rope he goes to, the player must hit him with the cannon pointing at that rope. He must be hit 3 times to be defeated.
Star Coins
- Star Coin 1: Not too far before the checkpoint, there's a hidden red pipe that can be reached with hidden blocks. The red pipe takes the player directly to the star coin.
- Star Coin 2: Immediately after the checkpoint, The star coin is floating over the lava. The player must wait for the grating to rise from the lava to get it.
- Star Coin 3: Once the verticle rectangular grating sinks into the lava, the player should wait until he/she is able to grab the third star coin.
