Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
It has been requested that this article be rewritten and expanded to include more information.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a popular Player's Choice Game Boy video game. Wario makes his first appearance in this sequel to Super Mario Land. Like the first game, Shigeru Miyamoto was not involved at all.
Story
While Mario was rescuing Princess Daisy in the first installment of the game Super Mario Land, Wario steals Mario's castle as he's the first that appeared. (This is the only game in which Mario owns a castle.) There was a revealation that Wario paid Tatanga to kidnap the Sarasaland Princess to create a distraction so greedy Wario could seize Castle Mario. Mario, reasonably angry with Wario, sets out to reclaim it. However, Wario puts a magical lock on the door which requires the six golden coins to open. To get these, Mario must move through levels stages such as sunken ships, the moon and a mechanical giant Mario. Once a zone's boss has been defeated, its coin flies to the door. When Mario retrieves all six coins, the door to the castle unlocks.
Wario's Castle is by far the hardest part of the game. It resembles Bowser's castle in other games, with similar elements including giant piranha plant statues and Donut Lifts that Wario used. Wario is at the end of this level, and a rather long fight with him awaits Mario.
At the beginning of the game, there is a short tutorial to get players accustomed to the controls. Other features include game shortcuts, extra levels, and secrets in this game! There's also a casino-like area in which Mario may gamble his coins that he collected from levels for extra lives and power-ups. There are some mini-games for Mario to play when Mario rings the other bell at the end of the level so he could get an item to obtain in that mini-game.
Characters
Zones & Bosses
There are seven zones in the game, including Wario's Castle.
- Tree Zone: The final boss of this zone is the giant bird Radonkel.
- Micro Zone: In this zone Mario became smaller, and the boss is the giant mouse Ricky.
- Pumpkin Zone: The boss is Sabasa, a witch who uses three cauldrons.
- Mario Zone: The Three Little Pigheads are this zone boss.
- Turtle Zone: The boss is very easy in this zone, it is just an Octopus.
- Space Zone: The boss of this zone is the main antagonist of the previous game, Tatanga.
Wario is the final boss of the game in his own castle.
Items
- Mushroom: Turns Mario into Super Mario.
- Fire Flower: Turns Mario into Fire Mario.
- Carrot: Turns Mario into Rabbit Mario.
- Heart: Extra Life (sometimes 3 extra lives if there is a 3 on it)
- Coin: Used in the Bonus Game.
- Money Bag: Contains 50 coins.
- Star: Turns Mario into Invincible Mario, for every five enemies defeated, Mario gains a life.
Obstacles
There are obstacles all over the zone levels in this game.
Differences
- The Starman doesn't fling or move randomly; instead, it stands still.
- Collecting 100 coins doesn't give Mario a 1-up, the coins are just stored.
- Defeating 100 enemies gives Mario a Starman.
Trivia
- Some enemies are recycled from enemies from Super Mario World (like Miner Ant, which is recycled form of a Digging Chuck).
- The worlds are all given names consistently ending in "Zone", a la Sonic the Hedgehog.
- This game introduced Bomb Mario.
