Daphne, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Daphne is a member of the Spark Hunters and a boss in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. She is a tall, blue-haired female Rabbid with a blue bob cut covering her eyes, and wears a dress resembling pink petals, a hood resembling a Piranha Plant's upper lip, green shorts, and yellow petal-like boots. Being half plant, she has vine tentacles. Her name is a reference to the nymph of the same name in Greek mythology, who turned herself into a tree to escape Apollo's advances. She is similar to Pirabbid Plant, a boss in the previous game, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, as they are both Rabbid bosses who have a plant theme and use vines to fight their enemies.

History

Daphne was created by Cursa along with Edge, Bedrock, Midnite, and Kanya to hunt down Sparks. When Edge betrayed Cursa, Daphne and her comrades turned on her in response as they retained their loyalty to Cursa.

After the heroes beat Bedrock, Daphne arrives in a spaceship to retrieve her and bring her to Cursa. Later, Daphne hands over three Sparks that she managed to capture to Cursa (to the annoyance of her comrades, who came back with nothing), who absorbs them. Later in Barrendale Mesa, Daphne fakes a transmission from Momma to trick the heroes after they repair the Windmill. When they return to Momma's Garage, it is revealed that Momma is Daphne in disguise, who holds the real Momma hostage and ambushes the heroes, forcing them to defeat her and save Momma. After Cursa's defeat, it is unknown what became of Daphne, although Edge assumes that after Cursa's defeat, the Sparks Hunters are still alive and will find themselves a new profession.

Personality

Not much is known about Daphne's personality, though she has been described by Edge as the "downright sneakiest, dirtiness, most devious" of the Spark Hunters, being very cruel and cunning, as shown when she captured three Sparks for Cursa while Midnite and Bedrock came back with none. When Cursa absorbs the energy from the Sparks, Daphne watches excitedly while the others watch worriedly, revealing that Daphne has a sadistic side to her. Later on, she manages to get the drop on Mario and the heroes by faking a transmission from Momma while disguising as her and traps the heroes in the Darkmess Dimension while taunting Edge.

Battle

Daphne is fought in the battle The Hunter of the Mesa. Like Midnite, Daphne is fought in three phases. She is on top of Momma's Garage at the far end of the battlefield, prompting the heroes to make their way to her before they can attack her. Daphne attacks by shooting two targets at once, and can also use a meteor technique which inflicts the Ooze Super Effect on nearby targets, as well as damaging nearby cover. If Daphne leaves her starting area, she can simply climb up to higher cover and return there. Whenever Daphne loses all of her HP, she will cause a solar eclipse, changing the battlefield layout. She can only do this twice, as she is defeated the third time. Daphne is resistant to the Ooze Super Effect.

Memory bio

It was on Barrendale Mesa that we crossed paths with the most vile, corrupt Spark Hunter of them all - Daphne. She toyed with us like a cat would a mouse, though she derived from neither. Cursa instead fused DNA with a rare species of pink climbing rose - those often found in secretive corners of moonlit gardens. She is sneaky, and uses her thorns well - not to defend, but to destroy.

Trivia

  • There is a spelling error when Daphne replies to Edge, who says, "Best to keep a clear a head" rather than "Best to keep a clear head".
  • As of version 1.2.2076427, Daphne's theme sounds more dramatic for all three phases.
  • In the cutscene where the Spark Hunters are sent out, all of their eyes glow, including Daphne's.
