Note: My talk page is not a help desk for the wiki. See our help pages or contact another administrator unless there is a major policy concern or technical issue with the website.

Text replacement: Requests are valid when you've manually updated all templates and the number of mainspace links after doing so is at least 25.

Flip-Flop Folk category

The article "Flip-Flop Folk" and its category were deleted as a result of this proposal, please can you run a bot to remove "Category:Flip-Flop Folk" from all articles? Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 20:25, October 29, 2024 (EDT)

Actually, can you wait on that? It's a lot easier for me to keep track of who needs the new categories with the Flip-Flop Folk one. I'll let you know when I'm done moving everything over, then you can run it. Technetium (talk) 20:27, October 29, 2024 (EDT)
Ok, you're all good to run it now! Technetium (talk) 21:08, October 29, 2024 (EDT)
Actually I'm stupid, there is no bot to run now that all instances of the category were manually removed by me, lol. Technetium (talk) 21:19, October 29, 2024 (EDT)

Recent proposal

As a result of this proposal passing, I'm requesting that some links be changed. IF any more should be, I will add more, but for now, here are my requested changes:

A little more help with the "Multilang profile" template

I appreciate the contributions you have made to {{Multilang profile}} over time.

I just logged a new edit on the template that seeks to prioritize English descriptions over the others by making the latter collapsible. However, due to the various set-ups of this template, many instances of it on the wiki are displaying content improperly. Specifically, the non-English descriptions will not go inside the collapsible space when the template (a) shows the type of description and (b) has both English and non-English descriptions. You can see an example here. I would like to know why this happens.

However, it works as intended when:

I decided not to make the non-English descriptions collapsible when there aren't any English ones because the purpose of this change would be moot--there's no sense prioritizing English text that isn't there. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 17:07, December 8, 2024 (EST)

Happy to help. So... the parser didn't like combining asterisks from multiple different functions within the columns div. For whatever reason. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 21:44, December 8, 2024 (EST)

How to merge accounts

Hi, on Triforce Wiki LTL's lost his account credentials and needs to make a new one, how would I go about merging his edit history to the new one? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:48, December 29, 2024 (EST)

You would need the UserMerge extension to do that. But I would forget that and just manually change the password on the account. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 13:52, December 29, 2024 (EST)
Great, thanks! That sounds a lot easier. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:11, December 29, 2024 (EST)

Bug on the to-do list

For whatever reason, the bubble for Category:Articles with too many disambiguation links fails to display its text, just leaving it as an ominous number. No idea why this is, unfortunately. Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 23:04, December 31, 2024 (EST)

Create a new !) template

I was wondering if you can create a new template called Template:!). This is what the template will look like:

<includeonly>|}</includeonly><noinclude>[[Category:Formatting templates|!]]</noinclude>

Don't forget to protect the template after you have created it. Thanks! GuntherBayBeee.jpgGuntherBayBeeeGravity Rush Kat.png 16:29, January 14, 2025 (EST)

Thanking

I want to thank you for these edits, but the new thanking system doesn't seem to work there. I get the following box:

Thank action failed (error code:
internal_api_error_Wikimedia\Assert\PostconditionException).
Please try again.

And all I can do is click OK. I did try it again later, and it seems to work as intended for others. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:32, January 17, 2025 (EST)

Template:Lost

How do you make this template visible while logged out? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 15:34, January 26, 2025 (EST)

Thank you so much for solving this issue. I have one more request; I think it would be useful if the "documented" parameter was used to split articles into a category called "Lost media with advanced wiki documentation". Setting these articles aside would make it easier for people with an interest in such things to navigate the subjects that are in a more dire need of attention. If you agree, I'd like to ask if you can add this function to the template. I would have performed this action on my own, but the template is currently protected. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 16:57, January 26, 2025 (EST)

Trivia to Notes

Hello. I'm new editor here. I was wondering why "Trivia" was changed to "Notes"? Sprig Plantar (talk) 19:20, February 2, 2025 (EST)

This proposal to do so just passed. Technetium (talk) 19:31, February 2, 2025 (EST)

Gallery Background Conundrums

Heya! Sorry to bother, but we had a question. On the Super Mario Bros. Special gallery, we wanted to give some of the entries there (namely, a good portion of the sprites) a #00F background, like how they appear in-game. Kinda like how the Super Mario Bros. gallery uses the in-game sky colors. However, uh, it turns out that it's not that simple, as it relies on classes, and using style is seemingly out of the question as well. Do you have any potential ideas for a more dynamic version of the classes we already have, like something that allows one to manually specify hex code (that way, if a similar issue like this crops up, we don't need to keep updating the CSS sheet for every new class we need for every new unique background); or failing that, just adding #00F to the available colors for classes? Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 14:10, February 9, 2025 (EST)

Clear your cache and take a look at this. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 14:56, February 9, 2025 (EST)
That's perfect for our purposes, thank you very much!! Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 15:01, February 9, 2025 (EST)

Math in tables

Does WikiMedia have a feature for tables where, say, one cell displays a value based on a math formula that uses values entered in other cells, like in Excel? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 14:09, February 12, 2025 (EST)

EDIT: For instance, a three-column table where the third column displays the result of 2x+y, where x and y are variables shown in the previous two columns, like so, except automated somehow:

Variable x Variable y Result
2 2 6
10 2 22

-- KOOPA CON CARNE 14:17, February 12, 2025 (EST)

There is this, but it's not exactly Excel level of simplicity:
Variable x Variable y Result
2 2 6
10 2 22
--Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:06, February 12, 2025 (EST)
Thank you so much! I would like to ask you one more math-related question: how do I check if a number is a natural number using MediaWiki syntax? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 19:10, February 12, 2025 (EST)
Something like this?
{{#ifeq:{{#expr:trunc abs(X)}}|X|is|is not}}

Donkey Kong Card Game images

Hello! I renamed Gallery:Donkey Kong Country (television series) trading cards to Gallery:Donkey Kong Card Game (trading cards) (per proposal), and I created a new article for the gallery.

Dark Mode

Would it be possible to enable this feature for non-logged-in visitors? I ask because of my dark mode proposal.--Vampire Wario from Dr. Mario 64 Pizza Master Waluigi using the Bitsize Candy from Mario Party 8 17:38, February 13, 2025 (EST)

It's better to keep it to logged-in users for server performance, but I guess we can give it a try if that proposal passes. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 11:03, February 14, 2025 (EST)

I would have to agree with STEVE

I have a idea

I saw that you are the inaugurator of this site. I don't know if you will accept, but you will need to put the date of the inauguration of this site on the main page. Here's an example to help you and a template to install.

"English (United States)" in game infoboxes

So this proposal of mine recently passed. I was thinking the best way to implement it is by running a bot to replace all instances of "en_US" in game infoboxes with just "en" whenever "en_GB" is not present. Assuming that's possible. PaperSplash (talk) 18:58, March 1, 2025 (EST)

Dark Mode Shenanigans

For one: VERY nice to see a proper Dark Mode added to the wiki. From just mucking about for an hour or so, we've found two things that we felt were worth acknowledging on a talk page, rather than on Discord (and figured we'd mirror a sillier remark over here for good measure):

  • The big one is that Navboxes lack colors altogether on Dark Mode. This is certainly a far cry from the meticulously-created color chart we've got!
  • The edit field's background is this rather bright light gray, rather than something closer to the background of the actual article body. Admittedly, this is moreso a matter of preference, though it feels weird that there's such a high contrast there.
  • This is a bit silly, but we wonder if it's possible to change the image for the moon icon on the header. The obvious suggestion is to make it a 3-Up Moon, since, well, 16x16 sprite of a Mario-related Moon. Maybe in light mode, it could be recolored to be white, and in dark mode it's the proper yellow?

Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 02:53, March 5, 2025 (EST)

Addition to this; maintenance templates and infoboxes also lack color, in addition to Navboxes. Would adding dark mode colors to these also be possible? Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 21:09, March 5, 2025 (EST)
Dark mode needs to override the original colors because they're too light, but custom dark colors can slowly start being applied to some areas. I need help getting dark mode colors. Let's start with notice templates. For each template background color, please give me a dark mode background hex color that looks good with white text. Thank you --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 22:13, March 5, 2025 (EST)
Using inspect element to imitate things, we've come up with a few colors. The associated templates isn't a complete list by any means, but this should cover the colors used by most common templates we've seen.
  • Red (abandoned/lost): #800
  • Orange (construction): #a40
  • Yellow (image): #a70 (note: it's... pretty hard to make a dark yellow that doesn't look Bad. would honestly suggest either a different color entirely.)
  • Seafoam Green ('shroom spotlight) #454
  • Green (just released/upcoming): #060
  • Light blue (stub): #049
  • Indigo-ish blue (damage): #44B
  • Light Purple (move/split/merge): #4F0A87
  • White (dev data): #777 (note: that's about as bright as you can make it before it starts to impact readability)
  • Light Gray (delete-request/delete-revision/delete-template): #555
  • Delete looks perfectly fine as-is, as it's already dark with white text.
Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 23:01, March 5, 2025 (EST)

Can I also report on some weird things in Dark Mode? The wiki editor field still appears to be set with light colors still for the most part (especially the bright white editing space itself as well as the UI above the editing space; and while the edit options space below the editing field is darker than usual, it's still a light gray. I dunno what the rest of our contributors think (I don't visit the wiki Discord that often), but I personally think the editing field should be dark as well, given that it's a really large space that takes up most of the screen.
And I also want to point out that when you view a page in portrait mode (whether in mobile view or desktop view with responsive mode enabled in the settings), opening a sidebar menu will have a white transparent space cover the rest of the page, which is also an eyesore that takes up most of the screen. Viewing a page in portrait mode while having responsive mode disabled also shows a weird bug with the sidebar menus, as they will appear white and have their rounded corners changed back to squared ones.
Here's some screenshots that showcase these issues:

If we had any idea how dynamic elements in .svg files worked, we would honestly probably make a version that adds an outline or otherwise chooses more... reasonable colors, depending on if Dark Mode is enabled. ~~also yeah the CD-i icons were already rather strange before darkmode but like it was at least somewhat readable~~ Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock (talk) 15:52, March 8, 2025 (EST)

Template:Ranking

I have a few problems with this template. I was wondering if you could help out.

  • When there are multiple charts that float next to each other, dividing them with gaps improves readability. However, the syntax I used to that end is an improvisation made with glue, sticks, and stones. Is there a better way to handle this?
  • When you create a chart with this template, some size inconsistencies appear between rows. In the example chart provided on the template's page, the 5th ranked player's row is much wider than the others. On this page, when multiple charts are placed side by side, many rows are not uniform with each other. Where this issue stems from is pretty clear: in the template's source code, there is an "if" function for each row, separated from the other "if"'s with line breaks; since the line breaks are outside the conditionals, they "stack", creating some ugly-looking free space on the last row depending how low it is in the chart. However, if I somply try removing the line breaks, the template stops being effective--the syntax used to generate spaces between neighboring charts is suddenly turned into plain text. What can I do?

I'm also grateful that you added Dark Mode for guest users! -- KOOPA CON CARNE 20:03, March 5, 2025 (EST)

Building tables with templates is sort of a nightmare and it's something we've been moving away from. Is this not acceptable for your needs? :)

Yes, I concede that this is better. My logic when I made the template was that, unlike the charts created through those other deprecated templates, the rankings have a fixed, predetermined order, and that the parameters consequently wouldn't need to be shifted around. But I agree that a basic syntax for these charts is generally easier to manage. Appreciate that you still made an effort to correct the template! -- KOOPA CON CARNE 18:21, March 6, 2025 (EST), edited 18:25, March 6, 2025 (EST)
