Enemies
Around thirty different types of enemies appear in Super Mario Land. Some are found throughout multiple kingdoms, though most are exclusive to a certain kingdom. The only recurring enemies of previous Super Mario titles are Piranha Plants, which were originally localized under their Japanese name "Pakkun Flowers" in the West, and Fighterflies from the arcade Mario Bros., which are simply referred to as "Flies". A few creatures are closely related to enemies of prior Super Mario games, while others are at least mechanically comparable. For example, the spiders Suu descends from ceilings similar to how Thwomps slam into the ground.
The English names for most of these enemies are romanizations of their Japanese names. The only exception is Kumo. The Virtual Console version's digital manual assigns altogether new names to some of the enemies.
