If Mario (or Luigi or Wario in the remake) gets close enough, they slide out, open their mouths, and charge through the air at him to attack. The green books disappear if they hit anything, including Mario. Attacking them gives Mario a Blue Coin and destroys the books. Members of the second type are found in only one room, the library, where they are found in infinite numbers. Members of this type are smaller, never open their mouths, and fly quickly from one shelf to the other in order to attack Mario. If Mario inputs the sequence to open the hidden door incorrectly, a Bookend hits him instead. Getting attacked by either type of Bookend results in losing two wedges of health.

Bookends appear only in the course Big Boo's Haunt. There are two types of Bookends. Members of the first type possess sharp teeth and disguise themselves as regular books within a bookshelf. If Mario, Luigi, or Wario gets close enough, they slide out, open their mouths, and charge through the air at him to attack. The green books disappear if they hit anything, including the player character. Attacking them gives the player character a Blue Coin and destroys the books. Members of the second type are found in only one room, the library, where they are found in infinite numbers. Members of this type are smaller, never open their mouths, and fly quickly from one shelf to the other in order to attack the player character. If the player character inputs the sequence to open the hidden door incorrectly, a Bookend hits him instead. Getting attacked by either type of Bookend results in losing two wedges of health.

Mario Party series

Bookends have a few minor appearances in the Mario Party series. In Mario Party 8, Bookends appear in King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, where they hover around in the rooms instead of lunging at players. In Mario Party DS, Bookends are enemies in the minigame Book Bash, where they flap at the player character down the corridor as they make their way to Kamek.
