- “Hiii!!”
- —Kirby, Super Smash Bros.
Kirby is an inhabitant from Planet Popstar and the protagonist of the Kirby series. He lives in the kingdom of Dream Land, which is ruled by the corrupt King Dedede. The self-proclaimed king frequently causes trouble, leaving it to Kirby to protect his homeland. On his adventures, he runs into many other characters, such as the shady Meta Knight. Kirby defeats Dedede and his many minions by his signature ability, inhaling items and enemies and spitting them out or copying their abilities.
While aside from some cameos, Kirby has rarely appeared alongside Mario in either of their series aside from a few issues of the Club Nintendo magazine and, most notably, in the Super Smash Bros. series.
History
Club Nintendo
Kirby made his first Mario-relevant appearances in the German Club Nintendo comics. He was one of the few non-Mario characters to appear there recurringly.
"Super Mario: Mario im Wunderland"
Kirby debuted in the comic "Super Mario: Mario im Wunderland." In this comic, Mario gets to Wunderland by accident, which is a strange land where a wizard, whose name is Crab is said to be able to fulfill desires. Among others, Mario meets Kirby in Wonderland, and mistakes him for a pillow. This annoys Kirby, and since he says he wants to look like Mega Man, he joins Mario on his way to the wizard. When arriving there, however, Kirby just says that he would like to not be a pillow any longer. The wizard then turns him into a toaster.
"Warios Weihnachtsmärchen"
In the story "Warios Weihnachtsmärchen," he is caged for unknown reasons in Wario's Bomb Shop and expresses his anger by commanding Wario to free him. The shopkeeper, however, paints him black and sells him as a "surprise bomb." When the buyer, Kid Klown, finds out about Kirby being the "surprise", both are angry at Wario. At the end of the story, they forgive him, as he gives some cookies to them.
"Super Mario in Die Nacht des Grauens"
He makes one more appearance in the comic "Super Mario in Die Nacht des Grauens," featuring him as Mario's ally in the fight against Abigor. In this story, Kirby lives in a skyscraper together with several other Nintendo characters. In order to fight Abigor, who plans to take over the building, Kirby together with Mario and Link puts on some magic clothes and serums which turn them into aggressive ghostbusters. In this form, Kirby uses his Inhale and temporary fire breath abilities to fight Abigor's allies.
"Die Jagd nach dem Nintendo 64: Krawall im All"
Kirby's latest relevant, yet very minor Club Nintendo appearance was in the comic "Die Jagd nach dem Nintendo 64: Krawall im All." Kirby was one of the many characters to celebrate the Mario Brothers when they managed to find the then new Nintendo 64 first, before Bowser and Wario.
Mario Kirby Meisaku Video
Kirby appeared alongside Mario in the obscure educational video Mario Kirby Meisaku Video; however, this video was merely a compilation of their non-intertwining adventures. In Kirby's Mario Kirby Meisaku Video segment, he helps a little lost dog find its mother, who was kidnapped by King Dedede.
Super Mario-Kun
Kirby appears as a cameo in Super Mario-Kun in volume 5. When Mario and his friends are chased by Boos, Mario notices a circular character. This circular character, Kirby, helps Mario and allies by swallowing the enemies. Kirby, however, shortly gets scared by a Boo with worms on its face and runs away.
Super Smash Bros. series
Super Smash Bros.
- Main article: SmashWiki:Kirby (SSB)
Kirby appears in Super Smash Bros., whereas Kirby is eight inches high: his dimensions were obviously heightened for this game. Kirby is a light fighter, and most of his attacks are light-weight (except for his Stone attack). However, Kirby has a unique ability that is exclusive to him: He is able to use suction abilities, and pull an opposing fighter inside his mouth. Once he spits that player out, Kirby would gain one of his or her powers. This attack is taken straight from the Kirby series. Each character gives him a different attack, and he could get rid of the power by taunting.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Main article: SmashWiki:Kirby (SSBM)
Kirby returns in the game's sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee. He is still a default character, but unlike the previous game, he is lighter and slower, which lead to a poor tier position in Melee's tier list. His new attack is the Hammer.
In Adventure Mode, Kirby appears in Stage 5: Green Greens. The player must battle 18 Kirbys, each with a different power.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- Main article: SmashWiki:Kirby (SSBB)
Kirby returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, along with his rival Meta Knight and archenemy King Dedede. Kirby's Final Smash attack is called Cook Kirby. Stage 5 of Classic Mode always uses characters from the Kirby series, thus Kirby has a chance of appearing in it. Stage 15 of All-Star Mode is also Kirby based.
Solid Snake Codec Conversation
- Otacon: Snake! Watch out!
- Snake: For what? That pink marshmallow?
- Otacon: That's Kirby, also known as "Kirby from Dream Land." He's from another planet--in other words, an extraterrestrial. He's got a powerful stomach that lets him swallow and digest anything. And he also has a "Copy Ability" that allows him to mimic opponents, steal their moves, and use those moves against them. On top of that, he has the power to fly around the stage, so once he's got you in his sights, there's no place to run.
- Snake: ...Huh? Yeah, got it. I'll... keep an eye out.
The Subspace Emissary
In the beginning, a trophy of Mario and Kirby are thrown into an arena. The two come to life and fight. The player chooses either Mario or Kirby to play as. After the battle between the two, the winner resurrects the loser with a touch. The Subspace Army attacks the stadium, but Mario, Kirby, Peach, and Zelda oppose them. Mario is blown away by a cannon ball, and Kirby is ambushed by Petey Piranha, who has captured the princesses. Kirby then goes off against Petey. After either Peach or Zelda is freed, Kirby takes her for a ride off into the Sea of Clouds on his Warp Star before taking a hit and landing on the Halberd. Soon, an Arwing is shot down, blowing both the princess and Kirby off the Halberd on the ground below.
After the princess and Kirby land in a grassy area, Kirby runs away, leaving the princess behind. The princess turns around and sees Bowser with a Dark Cannon who immediately shoots her to transform her into a trophy. Kirby hops on King Dedede's Cargo and waits there.
After King Dedede collects the Link and Yoshi (or Mario and Pit) trophies, Kirby hops out. King Dedede then gasps and with his Final Cutter, Kirby destroys the large object that is holding the two trophies. Kirby quickly revives the two, and they all jump off the cargo. King Dedede turns around and leaves, but his cargo ends up blowing an engine from an arrow that's either fired by Link or Pit.
Kirby, Mario, Pit, Link, and Yoshi become a team and go to save the other trophies (the other princess, Ness, and Luigi). They reach King Dedede's Castle, but they are still unable to rescue the trophies as Bowser escapes with the princess trophy in his Koopa Clown Car while the other trophies are buried under a large pile of stones. While Bowser steals the princess, the badge that Dedede had put on the princess falls. Kirby goes to inspect it and swallows it. The team then leaves because Dedede's Castle is destroyed by another Subspace Bomb. After leaving, they reach a desert below the castle where they follow the Ancient Minister. However the Ancient Minister sends R.O.B.s out to stop them, and he sets another bomb. It explodes, however Mario hops on Yoshi and rides off. Meanwhile, Pit and Link hop on Kirby's Warp Star and fly off. They escape before the explosion can reach them.
Later, Kirby and the others find the Ice Climbers, Marth, Lucas, the Pokémon Trainer, and Ike fighting the Subspace Army and subsequently join the fight. All of the other heroes join up with them afterward. Near the end, when the heroes are all fighting Ganondorf and Bowser in Ganondorf and Bowser's large Subspace Gunship, Kirby ends up destroying the gunship. He comes riding a Dragoon and flies right in the villain's large cannon, destroying not only the cannon but the whole ship itself. Ganondorf and Bowser escape going in the large black hole in the sky. All the heroes follow them inside.
The heroes are all in Subspace itself. Kirby and all the others attempt to fight Tabuu; however, they are all defeated with his Off Waves. The badge that Kirby swallowed turns out to have the power to turn a trophy back to life. Kirby is brought back and goes off to revive Link, Yoshi, Peach, Zelda, the Ice Climbers, Meta Knight, Lucario, R.O.B., Solid Snake, and even Wario, who also had been working with the Subspace Army and ended up in Subspace earlier on. Soon Kirby comes across Ganondorf in his trophy form, but before he could do anything, Bowser suddenly appears and starts attacking Ganondorf, having been betrayed by him earlier. Dedede (who revived Luigi and Ness with the badges) then reunites with Kirby. Kirby, as well as everyone else, fights Tabuu a second time and are able to defeat him (with some extra help).
Giant Kirby
Giant Kirby is, as his name implies, a gigantic Kirby, and a boss in the game Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Giant Kirby is only encountered by players if they manage to defeat every Kirby in the Green Greens stage of Super Smash Bros. Melee's Adventure Mode in less then thirty seconds. Doing so will summon Giant Kirby, who will drop from the air and challenge players.
Giant Kirby uses the same attacks as regular Kirby, though they're much more powerful. Giant Kirby, like his playable counterpart, can also inhale opponents and gain one of their abilities, as well as copy their appearance.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
- Main article: SmashWiki:Kirby (SSB4)
Kirby is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and his moveset only received subtle changes. His hammer became a move called Hammer Flip, similar to the move in Kirby Super Star, and his Final Smash is Ultra Sword, replacing Cook Kirby.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Kirby made a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in the Yoshi Theater poster. There was a poster in the theater advertising a movie known as Kirby Story, whose artwork featured Kirby riding a Warp Star through the air.
Mario Kart series
Mario Kart 8
Though Kirby does not appear in Mario Kart 8, his amiibo is compatible with the game. Placing it on the Wii U gamepad unlocks a custom Kirby-themed outfit for players to equip upon Miis.
Special Moves
Inhale
- Main article: SmashWiki:Inhale
Kirby's Inhale (Swallow in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee) attack, which appears in all five games from the Super Smash Bros. series, is his standard special move. When Kirby swallows an opponent, three things may happen. If the player presses the special or down button, Kirby, in almost all cases, copies his opponent's standard special attack in the place of Inhale, as well as receiving one of the several Kirby Hats corresponding with whichever opponent he swallowed. This does not work on the following only:
- Another Kirby (unless that Kirby has a different power)
- Metal Mario (Super Smash Bros. only)
- Any background enemy in Adventure Mode i.e. Primid, Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Koopa Paratroopa, ReDead, Like Like, Octorok, Topi, and Polar Bear.
- Polygons, Wire Frames, and Alloys.
- Bosses
- Giga Bowser
- Kirby also cannot swallow opponents that has taken a Mushroom.
If the player presses the or , Kirby spits out the character, doing damage to them. Kirby does not absorb his target's abilities by doing this. Also, opponents can break free from Kirby if they rapidly mash buttons.
In the original Super Smash Bros., if Kirby holds an opponent in his mouth, he would be unable to walk or jump until he spits or swallows the enemy. All he is limited to in movement is to turn around. This was fixed in Super Smash Bros. Melee. If Kirby uses his Taunt, he rids himself of the power that he gained.
Hammer
- Main article: SmashWiki:Hammer (move)
- Main article: WiKirby:Hammer
Hammer is a special move that Kirby can use in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is Kirby's side+ move, and the attack differs in the air. On the ground, Kirby pulls out a very large hammer, holds it back, and then swipes across, hurting anyone who gets hit. It is a good long distance move, but it takes a while to use. In the air, Kirby pulls out the Hammer, and he spins forward with the hammer out. This is also a good long range attack. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however, when done in mid-air, rather spinning with the hammer held upwards, Kirby now spins twice with the hammer held horizontally. In the E3 2006 trailer, it was shown to work identically to Melee. The Melee version is how it works in the Kirby series. The attack itself is one of the Kirby's many copy abilities in the Kirby series.
Hammer Flip
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Hammer was replaced by Hammer Flip, a different move usable by Hammer Kirby from some games in the Kirby series. It can be charged, Kirby can move and jump while using it, and is on fire. However, if it is held for too long, Kirby will take damage until his damage reaches 100% or above. When fully charged, it can reliably KO at least 40%. It has less knockback if it's used in the air, but Kirby swings twice (like in previous Super Smash Bros. games) if the attack is not fully charged.
Final Cutter
- Main article: SmashWiki:Final Cutter
Final Cutter is an attack that Kirby can use in all five Super Smash Bros. games. It is executed by performing an up-special. Kirby flies with a Scimitar and crushes on the ground, damaging any opponents. Also, the move doesn't stop there; when Kirby hits the ground with the sword, a blue wave is sent across the ground, damaging any opponents that hit it. When coming down, Final Cutter acts as a weak Meteor Smash. The attack was introduced in Kirby Super Star as part of the Cutter ability.
Stone
- Main article: SmashWiki:Stone
- Main article: WiKirby:Stone
Stone is an attack used by Kirby in all five Super Smash Bros. games. Kirby uses this attack only if a down special is executed. Once this is done, Kirby transforms into a random heavy object. He cannot move in this state, but he cannot be hurt. Grabbing, however, nullifies this immunity. The attack is best used in the air, so that Kirby can drop on the opponent. In the original Super Smash Bros., Kirby only turned into a rock. However, in subsequent releases, Kirby could change into different things; a Garbage Block from Panel de Pon, a Thwomp from Super Mario 64 (or New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the case of the 3DS and Wii U versions), a 100T weight and, a spiked ball (bearing a similar look to a Gordo).
Cook Kirby
- Main article: SmashWiki:Cook Kirby
- Main article: WiKirby:Cook
Cook Kirby is the name of Kirby's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When Kirby breaks the Smash Ball during a fight, he can pull out a giant soup pot and wear a chef's hat. He uses his spatula to draw players, and even items into the pot and starts to simmer the boiling soup. As he does this, he damages the players caught in the pot massively. He then takes out all the players, and sends them flying across the stage with items coming out.
The items that pop up is determined by what items are turned "ON" in the Item Switch menu. This applies to Group Mode and Training, but not for any other game mode.
Ultra Sword
Ultra Sword is Kirby's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. When activated, Kirby becomes Ultra Sword Kirby. Whoever gets hit in the first slash will get stuck, only to get hit by many more sword strikes. On the final hit the sword gets giant and Kirby slashes with it, and his enemies get sent flying. It can hit bystanders. Anyone who jumps in before the last hit will also get stuck.

Profile Information from Super Smash Bros.
The 8-inch high Kirby hails from a distant, peaceful star. Like his simplistic appearance, he is an easily-understood character. True to his instincts, Kirby eats when he gets hungry and sleeps as soon as he grows tired. Nevertheless, Kirby remains a formidable opponent. In addition to his distinct flying and swallowing skills, he also has the ability to copy enemy attacks for ever-changing action.

160 | Kirby Hat 4 | Super Smash Bros. Melee 12/01 |
Looks like Kirby's copied a bunch of hidden characters! In Luigi's hat, he can shoot green Fireballs, while copying Mewtwo gives him the power to throw Shadow Balls. 161 | Kirby Hat 5 | Super Smash Bros. Melee 12/01 |
Secret hats galore! In Pichu's hat Kirby can shoot out electricity, while Dr. Mario's headgear gives him Megavitamins. When Kirby copies Ganondorf he gets the Warlock Punch, and copying Roy produces a Flare Blade.
233 | Fire Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 5/93 |
When Kirby swallows a fire-wielding enemy, he transforms into Fire Kirby. Not only does he breathe fire in this form, but he can also sprout flames on his entire body and damage enemies by crashing into them. 234 | Fighter Kirby | Kirby Super Star 9/96 |
Kirby dons a warrior's headband and becomes a fierce fighter when he swallows an enemy skilled at physical attacks. Fighter Kirby uses many colorful punching and kicking moves as he overpowers his enemies with his sparring skills. The Vulcan Jab is just one of the many techniques Kirby can use thanks to his copying power.
235 | Ball Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 5/93 |
When Kirby swallows a ball enemy, he turns into a ball and can bounce off of floors and walls. It's tough to control, but well worth it for the strong attack power it gives Kirby. After his debut in Kirby's Adventure, Ball Kirby has popped up in several more Kirby games, such as Kirby's Pinball Land and Kirby's Block Ball. |

All characters, items, and even long-distance weapons are sucked into the pot. Once they've simmered a bit, food items equal to the number of things in the pot appear. Characters in the mix get blasted straight up out of the pot.
393 | Beam Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby in a jester cap...and a super cute Kirby at that. Beam Kirby features a Beam ability, acquired by inhaling Waddle Doo, that allows him to shoot a whiplike beam at his enemies. With a wide attack range, this ability is extremely easy to use, especially for taking out enemies in bunches. In Kirby Super Star, this beam can also be charged and fired.
394 | Needle Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
A Kirby ability made when Kirby inhales a spiked enemy. When attacking, the needles on Needle Kirby's body extend, giving him a porcupine-like look. This ability provides both offensive and defensive measures against nearby enemies. Plus, needles which extend on Kirby's underside when jumping eliminate any threats on landing.
395 | Sword Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
A Kirby ability made when Kirby inhales a sword-wielding foe or a sword itself. Doing so provides Kirby with a rapid sword slash, a jumping sword spin, or even the energy-beam blast of the Final Sword. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that this is the #1 Copy Ability in terms of accessibility.
396 | Sleep Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby after he copies the ability to sleep peacefully. Kirby takes on this form when he inhales Noddy or other such enemies. Kirby cannot move at all while sleeping, so extra care should be taken not to use this ability when enemies are near. Kirby, in his slumber, tends to drool, and in his panicked awakening, isn't it cute how he forgets to wipe off the drool?
397 | Wing Kirby | Kirby Super Star 1996 |
Kirby when he inhales a winged enemy and copies its flying ability. This ability can be used to proceed through strong winds that would otherwise be too tough to overcome. Wing Kirby can also perform a plethora of attack moves, such as the Bomber Head, where Kirby dive-bombs onto enemy heads.
398 | Fighter Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby when he is skilled in martial arts, especially close-quarters combat. Inhaling brawny challengers like Knuckle Joe will transform Kirby, allowing him to use a bunch of fight moves like Rising Break, the heroic uppercut. His Mega Power Shot in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, which used charged energy to take out faraway enemies, is another Fighter Kirby highlight.
399 | Fire Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby when he inhales an enemy who uses fire. Shooting fire from his mouth, Fire Kirby can cook enemies from afar. This ability also allows Kirby to light explosive blocks, fuses, and so on. In Kirby Super Star and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Fire Kirby can roll his burning body into enemies as an attack move.
400 | Ice Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby when he copies an enemy with chilly abilities. Ice Kirby can blow an icy wind from his mouth and freeze enemies solid. These frozen enemies can then be knocked into other enemies as an additional means of attack. These blocks are not only effective against enemies but can also be used on terrain such as magma or water.
401 | Plasma Kirby | Kirby Super Star 1996 |
Kirby when he inhales Plasma Wisps, which glow with a neon green flame. Plasma Kirby can charge the plasma strength up to a maximum level of 5. In Kirby Super Star, your attack--be it a Plasma Laser or a Plasma Wave Cannon--varies with the length of time you charge it.
402 | Tornado Kirby | Kirby's Adventure 1993 |
Kirby when he inhales enemies that fly around like twisters through the sky. When in tornado form, Kirby can spin freely through the air for short amounts of time, clearing out groups of enemies. Tornado Kirby will continue spinning and bouncing violently off of obstacles until he comes to a stop. One drawback of Tornado Kirby is the control difficulty. |
