Subseries Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Party, Wii Play

The Wii series is composed of games mainly developed by Nintendo for the console of the same name, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. It encompasses games with different genres intended for a casual audience, such as sports, party, and fitness games.

Several games in the Wii series feature elements from, and references to, the Super Mario franchise. Likewise, the Super Mario franchise, most prominently the Mario Kart series, also features elements that originate from Wii series games.

Overview[edit]

The Wii series does not have a consistent genre; instead, it includes various titles initially created with the Wii in mind that are designed to be played by anyone. The first games in the series to be developed were Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, and Wii Music, which are a sports game, a fitness game, a minigame collection, and a music game, respectively. The series would later expand to more genres (like party with the Wii Party games, which have similar gameplay to that of the Mario Party series) and continue into Nintendo's later consoles. The series would become popular amongst the casual audience, with Wii Sports, the first game of the series to be released, surpassing Super Mario Bros. as the best-selling Nintendo game.

Prominent crossover elements[edit]

Characters[edit]

Miis[edit]

Main article: Mii

Miis are digital avatars that have been used across many Nintendo consoles and services since the Wii. Since their introduction in Wii Sports, they have appeared as both playable and non-playable characters in various Nintendo games, including games in the Super Mario franchise. They are the most prominent characters of the Wii series, appearing in all of its games except Wii Chess. They are also the main characters in some games outside of the Wii series, like the Tomodachi series, Miitopia, and StreetPass Mii Plaza. Miis originate from a concept by Shigeru Miyamoto and were initially conceived to only be used for Wii Sports before it was decided to turn their creation software into a Wii Channel.[1]

This article does not include Mii appearances unrelated to the Wii series. For the history of Miis in the Super Mario franchise, see here.

Wii Fit Trainer[edit]

MiiWiki article: Trainer

The Wii Fit Trainer, generically referred to as the trainer in the original games, is the exercise coach appearing in the Wii Fit series. They instruct and guide players through the games' Yoga and Strength Training activities. Both female and male trainers appear, and players can choose to have their favorite trainer appear in the activities. They have white skin and wear differently-colored clothing depending on the activity, although they always wear green in Wii Fit U.

The Wii Fit Trainer appears as a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. The female Wii Fit Trainer also appears as a Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker and as a Wario's amiibo Sketch drawing in WarioWare Gold.

Wii Balance Board[edit]

MiiWiki article: Wii Balance Board (character)

The Wii Balance Board is the guide character of the Wii Fit series. They are based on the peripheral of the same name. They appear in all of the Wii Fit games when a new player sets up their profile, later guiding them during their first Body Test and explaining the game's features to them.

In the Super Mario franchise, the Wii Balance Board appears as a Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker. In the Super Smash Bros. series, they appear during the Wii Fit Trainer's on-screen appearance, in the background of the Wii Fit Studio stage, as a trophy, and as a spirit.

Locations[edit]

Wuhu Island[edit]

Main article: Wuhu Island

Wuhu Island, known as Wii Fit Island in Wii Fit, is a tropical location inhabited by Miis that appears in Wii Sports Resort and the Wii Fit series. Notable locations on the island include the Maka Wuhu volcano, Wuhu Town, The Candle lighthouse, Red Iron Bridge, Duckling Lake, Camel Rock, and the Mysterious Ruins. In the Wii Fit series, it is the location of the running events, while in Wii Sports Resort, it is the location of all sports except golf, which instead takes place on the nearby Wedge Island.

Wuhu Island has also appeared outside of the Wii series: in Pilotwings Resort as its main location, in the Mario Kart series as the location of two race courses (Wuhu Loop and Maka Wuhu) and one battle course (Wuhu Town), and in the Super Smash Bros. series as a stage.

History in the Super Mario franchise[edit]

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart 7[edit]

Wuhu Island appears in Mario Kart 7 as the location of the race courses Wuhu Loop and Maka Wuhu and the battle course Wuhu Town. Wuhu Loop is set in the day and its layout takes place on the island's loop road, starting from Wuhu Town towards the Red Iron Bridge. Maka Wuhu is set in the evening and starts from the beach of Wuhu Island, with the layout taking racers up to Duckling Lake before leading to a Glide Ramp back to the beach. Wuhu Town is set in the night and takes place in Wuhu Island's main town. Both Wuhu Loop and Maka Wuhu are section courses and feature an arrangement of the title theme of Wii Sports Resort as their music.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

The Wuhu Town battle course returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The course's artstyle, and thus Wuhu Island's artstyle, has been updated to that of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's base game. Some other changes were also made, such as changing the time to daytime and color-coding the buildings' roofs. Additionally, the music was changed to be an arrangement of the theme of Wuhu Loop and Maka Wuhu.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, the female Wii Fit Trainer and the Wii Balance Board appear as Mystery Mushroom costumes. The Wii Fit Trainer costume is unlocked by scanning her amiibo or randomly after completing 100 Mario Challenge on Normal difficulty or higher. Her poses include the Dancer pose while standing, walking, and running, the Half-Moon pose while skidding/turning around, and the stretching position while crouching. Similarly to the Wii Fit Trainer costume, the Wii Balance Board costume is also unlocked randomly after completing 100 Mario Challenge on Normal difficulty or higher. Holding +Control Pad up on the latter costume shows the Wii Fit Trainer doing the Dancer pose on the Wii Balance Board. The sound effects for both costumes are taken from Wii Fit.

WarioWare series[edit]

WarioWare Gold[edit]

WarioWare: Move It! features a microgame based on the Pose Mii Plus minigame of Wii Play: Motion, titled Wii Play: Motion Pose Mii Plus, in which players must imitate a form to let the Mii pass through.

History in the Wii series[edit]

Wii Sports series[edit]

Wii Sports[edit]

The castle present on Hole 5 of Wii Sports.
The Hole 5 castle

In Wii Sports, the golf holes are taken directly from Golf. The castle present in the background of Hole 5 is identical to the Castles of New Super Mario Bros., without the flags and windows.

During the game's development, Mario was added as a playable character while the developers were deciding which characters to add, but he was removed because the developers felt like Mario was the one playing and they were just controlling him, instead of feeling like they were the ones playing the game.[1]

Wii Sports Resort[edit]

Similarly to the previous game, the golf holes in Wii Sports Resort (known as "Resort" holes) are taken directly from Golf: Japan Course; the golf holes from Wii Sports also return as "Classic" holes (as well as the castle in Hole 5). The countdown timer used at the start of the racing events sounds similar to the one used in the Mario Kart series. In particular, the Cycling event's timer sounds almost identical to the one used in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. In the Island Flyover event, "Ground BGM", "Player Down", and "Game Over" from Super Mario Bros. can be heard by flying near the Hillside Cabins area; the area's nighttime description reads: "Sounds like someone's playing NES, but they need a few pointers..." When playing the same event at night, the description of the Mysterious Ancient Ruins in the PAL version states that skeletons were found in a pit along with shells, possibly referencing Dry Bones. Additionally, the name of the ship "The Queen Peach" may be a reference to Princess Peach.

Wii Sports Club[edit]

Both Classic and Resort golf holes return in the Wii U remake of Wii Sports, Wii Sports Club. The castle in Classic Hole 5 is also still present.

Nintendo Switch Sports[edit]

The Classic and Resort golf holes reappear once again in Nintendo Switch Sports, although the Classic Hole 5 castle has been removed.

Wii Fit series[edit]

Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus[edit]

In the running events of Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus, 8-bit sprites of Mario and Luigi can be spotted. On a few occasions, a Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Mushroom, or Super Star sprite may also appear along the side of the trail. In Wii Fit Plus, these sprites have a purpose: at the end of Jogging Plus, one of the many questions asked can be which sprite the player spotted.[2]

In early builds of Wii Fit Plus, Monty Mole's model from Mario Kart Wii was used as a placeholder for the moles in Segway Circuit.[3]

Wii Fit U[edit]

Just like the previous games, 8-bit sprites of Mario, a Goomba, and a Mushroom can be spotted during Free Run in Wii Fit U. Additionally, in the Hosedown minigame on advanced difficulty, a Warp Pipe can be seen in the background.

Wii Music[edit]

In Wii Music, "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. is unlocked after one has cleared the first four levels of Pitch Perfect, simply called "Super Mario Bros." This song was performed during the showcase of Wii Music at Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference.[4]

Wii Party series[edit]

Wii Party[edit]

The 8-bit Marios in Clover Hunt

In the minigames section accessed from the main menu of Wii Party, one of the minigames under the Challenge subsection is called Clover Hunt. This is a minigame in which players must locate a certain number of objects that are slightly different from the rest shown on the screen. If the player reaches the final five stages, the object they are given to find is 8-bit Mario from Super Mario Bros. They must find the required number of 8-bit Marios that are standing still, all of which are hidden amongst multiple 8-bit Marios in a jumping position.

Wii Party U[edit]

In the Mii Fashion Plaza TV Party in Wii Party U, Miis can dress up like Mario (male) or Princess Peach (female). There are also a few stores that are Super Mario-themed. In Mad Hatters, players can choose to wear the Mario Cap, giving two points if no one else is wearing it. In Dance with Mii, the player can dance to an arrangement of "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. titled "Ground Theme (Super Mario Bros.)"

Shared history[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features two music tracks from the Wii series: "Opening Theme (Wii Sports)", a medley of themes from Wii Sports, and "Charge! (Wii Play)", the music of the minigame of the same name from Wii Play. "Opening Theme (Wii Sports)" is available by default, while "Charge! (Wii Play)" is unlocked by collecting a CD. Both tracks are playable on the PictoChat stage.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

The Wii Fit Trainer is one of the 21 newcomers introduced in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The latter game also introduces two stages based on the Wii Fit series and Wii Sports Resort, being Wii Fit Studio and Wuhu Island, respectively, in addition to several trophies and music.

Select material is outlined below. For Wii series trophies, see here. For music, see here.

Fighters
  • Wii Fit Trainer—The Wii Fit Trainer is a middleweight fighter with above average movement. All of their moves derive from yoga or exercise poses. Both female and male trainers are playable, and their costumes are based on the color of their clothes in the Wii Fit series.
Stages
  • Wii Fit Studio (Wii U)—A fitness studio with a large mirror, based on the location of the Yoga and Strength Training activities from the Wii Fit series. Three Wii Balance Board-shaped platforms occasionally descend and ascend. The Wii Balance Board character can also be seen in the background.
  • Wuhu Island (Wii U)—The island from Wii Sports Resort. The stage is set on floating platforms which take fighters to multiple points on the island. Several Miis can be seen spectating or doing events from the original game.

Wuhu Island is also one of two locations visited in the Pilotwings stage, referencing its role in Pilotwings Resort.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes every fighter to have previously appeared in the series, including the Wii Fit Trainer. They are now slighty faster, and their moves have been improved. Wii Fit Studio and Wuhu Island (as well as Pilotwings) also return as stages, remaining largely unchanged.

In the World of Light mode, the player must free all fighters (excluding Kirby, who manages to escape) from Galeem's imprisonment, including the female Wii Fit Trainer. In the introductory cutscene, she is seen doing a yoga pose before being hit by one of Galeem's beam of lights. The player has the opportunity to save her in the northern part of the city area of The Light Realm.

Several spirits and new and returning music tracks based on the Wii series are also included in the game. For spirits, see here. For music, see here.
