Quawks makes a surprise appearance as an item in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, along with Squawks. In this game, he is finally given the official name of "Quawks" in English. Here, he acts similar to the Spiny Shell from the Mario Kart series. When obtained, he can be used to knock the racer in first place. The name was previously introduced in Japanese materials, at the latest for the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 3.[1]
In Donkey Kong 64, purple parrots similar in appearance to Quawks appear as background characters in some of the game's cutscenes, along with green parrots.
Name Controversy
The true English name of Quawks went unknown for over a decade; however, popular fanon created by the website Donkey Kong Universe stated the character's name is "Squeaks". This name was derived from Swanky Kong's trivia game. One question asked "What is the name of your parrot buddy?"and the possible answers were "Squawks", "Flapper", and "Squeaks". Since then, "Squeaks" was attributed to the unnamed purple parrot, while "Flapper" is used to designate the unnamed blue parrot from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. However, in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, he is named Quawks, as he was previously named in Japan.
