When used, they will be fired at the opposing players, however, they do not home in, like the [[Red Shell]] does. If the Blue Shell happens to hit a player, they will instantly freeze in one spot. This will render them unable to move, and, thus, unable to get the ball. The effects wear off after a few seconds. Unfortunately, these shells can freeze both the users teammates, or the user him/herself. If the shells fail to hit anyone, they will continue bouncing around the stage until they either hit a player, or just wear out on their own. Blue Shells act similarly to Red Shells, as they knock over the target in front of the player who used it, until reach to the one in first place, where the shell bowls over the [[kart]] and then destroys. Although a reliable item, the shell stops working easily if knocks over a wall.  In ''[[Mario Hoops 3 on 3]]'', this version of Blue Shell appears in the item list of the game. After homing in on a player, it will explode, affecting anyone within the blast radius.

This shell comes with a pair of wings, allowing the item to fly over the course, avoiding all the obstacles around as opposed to its former appearance. After firing one, it flies over the track, homing on the current contestant in first place. Once it reaches to its destination, the shell hovers briefly on its target and crashes into the kart, blowing up everything in the vicinity in an explosion. This shell has appeared lately in ''[[Mario Kart DS]]'' and ''[[Mario Kart Wii]]''. In ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games]]'' for DS, this blue shell is also  an item in [[Dream Canoe]].

Blue Shells, also known as Blue Koopa Shells,[1] are blue Koopa Troopa shells that first appear in Super Mario World. While occasionally worn by Koopa Troopas, they are more prevalent as items that Mario or Luigi can use.

Blue shells first appear in Super Mario World, either alone or on the back of a Koopa Troopa. As with other colors of shells, jumping on a Koopa Troopa will cause the shell to be removed, where it can then be held or thrown. When Yoshi eats one, he will grow wings and gain the ability to fly for a limited time, at the end of which he will swallow the shell. Blue Yoshi can gain this ability by eating a shell of any color. Yoshis can also spit the shell back out, in which case it will behave like a Green Shell, flying out at high speed and defeating enemies in its way. If the player attempts to launch the shell back at a blue unshelled Koopa, it will stop the shell and kick it back at the player. If a green or red unshelled Koopa comes in contact with the Blue Shell (or kicks it right-side up if upside down), it will then jump in it and become that colored Koopa.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
