Leyden is the chief of Bulbfish Island in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Responsible for watching over the island's namesake Bulbfish and their eggs, he has a strained relationship with his assistant, who is also his son. He is an old man with teal skin and a white mustache who wears a blue robe. Leyden's name is both a real surname and a reference to the Leyden jar.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Leyden has been chief of Bulbfish Island for a long time, but he is a lazy and incompetent leader. In his assistant's diary, he is described as often taking naps on the job and was even unable to change the bathroom lightbulb by himself at one point. When islanders began getting infected by Glohm, Leyden was the first to be blamed.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

When Mario and Luigi arrive on Bulbfish Island, they find Leyden outside his house, surrounded by islanders. The island's Bulbfish eggs had been stolen, and the residents immediately suspect Leyden of committing the crime. Frantically declaring his innocence, Leyden runs inside. Inside the house, Mario and Luigi meet with Leyden, who asks them to find the real culprit. In exchange, he will allow them access to his house's second floor, which leads to the island's lighthouse.

Just as Mario, Luigi, and Snoutlet deduce Leyden's assistant to be the egg thief, Leyden is convinced by his assistant that Burnadette and Chilliam are the culprits, and the couple is arrested.

Eventually, Leyden's assistant is caught as being the thief, and he threatens to throw the eggs into the sea. He admits to how much he hated his father and how he schemed to take his position as chief. While Leyden is disappointed (though not surprised) that his son would do such a thing, he realizes he is at fault due to his bad parenting. Father and son apologize to each other, only for the two to start beating each other up over Leyden's snacks being eaten. Leyden lies defeated on the ground, while his son is punished to do his father's work for him, considering Leyden "never does it right anyway".

Later, during the "Leyden's Piscine PR Plans" side quest, Leyden plans to find a new fish for Bulbfish Island to produce, hoping to gain the respect and praise of the residents and his son alike. After Mario and Luigi give Leyden an Offin and an Egoby, he rewards the brothers with three Ultra Mushrooms and a Max Syrup Jar.

When Reclusa awakens, Leyden gets captured by a flower and trapped in his own fantasy.

During the credits, Leyden can be seen in Club Dyode on Jellyfish Island.
