He often only comes out if you get too close to him, and he gets faster as he gets closer to you. If you give him a successful bop on the head, you can get a blue coin.  If you are unseccessful, you lose 2 life points.

Bookends[1] are enemies encountered within Big Boo's Haunt in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. They are living book creatures with sharp teeth that disguise themselves as regular books within a bookshelf. Their name is derived from a word referring to a shelving accessory used to keep a row of books upright. If a Bookend is nearby, it slides out, opens its mouth, and charges at the player character to attack.[2] Attacking a Bookend destroys it and releases a Blue Coin.[2] If a Bookend hurts the player character, the latter loses two wedges of health. An unlimited number of smaller Bookends appear in the library, never opening their mouths as they launch between shelves.[3][4]

The only other appearance of Bookends is in two games of the Mario Party series: Mario Party 8, where they hover around the rooms of King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, and Mario Party DS, where "flying books"[5] fly at the player character on their way to Kamek during the minigame Book Bash, attempting to hinder them.
