Dinosaur Land (also known as Dinosaur Island on the remake's official site, and Dinosaur World in the cartoon), is a land in the Mushroom World and the region in which Mario, Luigi and Peach go on vacation in Super Mario World. As usual, Bowser kidnaps Peach, and Mario and Luigi must defeat him to rescue her.

Dinosaur Land is the main setting in every episode of the Super Mario World animated series. Throughout the show, Dinosaur Land is mostly referred to as Dinosaur World (except by King Koopa in "Send in the Clown").

Unlike the game Super Mario World, Dinosaur World's main inhabitants consist of Cave People, and there is only one Yoshi that lives there. The Cave People lack technology, although they managed to have built at least one city, Dome City. Throughout the show, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool have tried to introduce modern culture to Dinosaur Land's inhabitants.

Species in Dinosaur Land
In "A Little Learning" Princess Toadstool opens a school. The episode reveals that Dinosaur World has a flag, which is red with blue and yellow stripes. A light blue circle with a green dinosaur is in the center of the flag. The school day starts with the characters pledging to the Dinosaur Land flag; the pledge largely parodies the United States' Pledge of Allegiance. Princess Toadstool, Yoshi, and the Cave People say the first part of the pledge. Hip and Hop Koopa interrupt them by making up the second part of the pledge, which is about King Koopa and his minions.
Like in Yoshi's Island, this land has Yoshis living here. Despite the name, Super Mario World features only a few other dinosaur species: Blargg, Dino Rhino and Dino-Torch, Eerie, Rex, and Reznor. All are rarely encountered; Dino Rhino and Dino-Torch are found only in Chocolate Island, Eerie only in Ghost Houses, Blargg in three levels, and Reznor are boss characters. Most of the inhabitants are Koopas, Piranha Plants, and other Mario game staple enemies.

Politics and Culture
In "Mama Luigi", Luigi tells Yoshi that Mario and Peach, along with himself, had come to Dinosaur Land to stop King Koopa. He explains that they had succeeded at banishing King Koopa and his Koopalings from the Mushroom Kingdom and celebrated by taking a vacation in Dinosaur Land, only to see that King Koopa had relocated there.

In Super Mario World, Dinosaur Land was more or less devoid of culture and even people, although it was known to be at least partially populated by Yoshis (who were known to be able to speak, but had not yet developed a distinctive, established culture). Later, in the Yoshi series (which presumably takes place on Dinosaur Land, although, as stated above, the actual setting is unconfirmed), Dinosaur Land was shown to have more intelligible inhabitants (who were confirmed to be the Yoshis on at least Yoshi's Island) who built tree-like huts and lived together in villages. These games, which gave Dinosaur Land much more culture and limited politics, showed that most of the Yoshis trusted in the main Green Yoshi (for an unknown reason) and had great togetherness, being able to always depend on each other for help.

The Super Mario World television series was one of the earliest forms of media to show an inhabited Dinosaur Land (though here known as Dinosaur World) in-depth, and it revealed that the world was inhabited by cavepeople (oddly, Yoshi himself was the only Yoshi to ever appear in the show). These cavepeople were seen to have limited togetherness and intelligence, and had even built at least one city; they were, however, rather stupid and seemed to care little about culture and organization. Because of this, several Super Mario World show episodes dealt with Mario and Luigi attempting to popularize modern items among the cavepeople and help them in vaguely political things, although their plans most often went wrong. One of the most interesting and one of the few successful of their capers, though, involved Princess Toadstool opening up a school; this episode even revealed that Dinosaur Land had a flag (a red, yellow, and blue one depicting what appears to be a Yoshi) and a pledge to it. This pledge, which largely parodied the United States' Pledge of Allegiance, went like this: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Lands of Dinosaur World, and to the repulsiveness for which he stands: one Koopa underground, reprehensible, with lizards and Goombas for all." It is likely that the second half of this pledge, which was awkwardly stated by Hip and Hop Koopa, is the Koopas' answer to the pledge, though, as it deals with the Koopa Troop and evil in addition to the fact that the other students gave Lemmy and Iggy odd looks as they said it, although this could have also been due to the fact that the two Koopa enemies had merely just arrived at their school.

Dinosaur Land is featured in the Super Mario Adventures comic. It is the first location that Mario and Luigi travel to through the Warp Pipe in pursuit of Bowser. Upon meeting Yoshi and discovering that he is friendly, the brothers follow him back to Yoshi Village, which has him as its "Chairman of the Dinosaur Chamber of Commerce". A human named Friendly Floyd also resides there and sells the Mario Bros. Acme's Yoshi Language Learner for 10 coins.

The Super Mario Adventures comic also gave Dinosaur Land a surprising quantity of politics and culture even at the age of the Super Mario World game; it introduced Yoshi Village (a Yoshi-inhabited village eerily similar to the one seen in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time) and even stated that Yoshi was the "Chairman of the Dinosaur Chamber of Commerce"; he presumably earned this title through election or another type of political gathering. A sign in the Nintendo Adventure Book Dinosaur Dilemma mentions a governor named B. Ron Tosaur.
At the end of the story, Yoshis trapped in eggs are freed from the basement of Bowser's Castle. Mario and Luigi ride them and lead a stampede of Yoshis to trample over Bowser's army, eat the wedding cake, sending Bowser falling to his defeat.

Finally, Dinohattan of the Super Mario Bros. film was inspired by Dinosaur Land, though takes more from the Mushroom Kingdom and Subcon.

Dinosaur Land, also known as Dinosaur Island,[1] is an archipelago inhabited by dinosaurs and the region where Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool go on a vacation to in Super Mario World. Dinosaur Land generally has a lush, green appearance to it, along with several hills. It also has some mountains, caves, a forest area, and an underground valley. There is almost no industrialization on Dinosaur Land except for Ghost Houses, and the fortresses and castles set up by Bowser and the Koopalings.

History[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Yoshis are notable inhabitants of Dinosaur Land and live in the first world, Yoshi's Island. Despite its name, several of Dinosaur Land's inhabitants are not dinosaurs, such as Dolphins and Swoopers. Other dinosaurs found on the island include Blarggs, Dino-Rhinos, Dino-Torches, Eeries, Rexes, and Reznors.

The Shogakukan guide for Yoshi features an origin story for Dinosaur Land. In the ancient past, an active volcano in the middle of the islands located in the southern seas rendered the dinosaurs living there extinct. Tens of thousands of years later, five shooting stars (implied to be the Star Road) came from the light of Star World one night, and one of them knocked the top half of a fossilized egg to its lower half inhabited by contemporary monsters, resulting in Yoshi hatching. These events also resulted in the resurrection of other dinosaurs, and the islands came to be known as Dinosaur Land.[2]

Dinosaur Land is featured in the Super Mario Adventures comic. It is the first location that Mario and Luigi travel to through the Warp Pipe in pursuit of Bowser.[3] Upon meeting Yoshi and discovering that he is friendly, the brothers follow him back to Yoshi Village, which has him as its "Chairman of the Dinosaur Chamber of Commerce". A human named Friendly Floyd also resides there and sells the Mario Bros. Acme's Yoshi Language Learner for 10 coins.[4]

At the end of the story, Yoshis trapped in eggs are freed from the basement of Bowser's Castle. Mario and Luigi ride them and lead a stampede of Yoshis to trample over Bowser's army, eat the wedding cake, sending Bowser falling to his defeat.[5]
