Nibblas are similar to Snapjaws, enemies from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Like Snapjaws Nibblas will follow the Kongs throughout a level ready to chomp down on either Dixie or Kiddy Kong if they fall into the water. Nibblas mostly appear in levels that have boardwalks in them. Also like Snapjaws, Nibblas are completely invulnerable and cannot be harmed.
Nibblas appear in three levels: Bobbing Barrel Brawl, Kreeping Klasps, and Fish Food Frenzy. Fish Food Frenzy features a unique Nibbla that eats underwater enemies along the way while following the Kongs throughout. The Nibbla changes color depending on its mood. If Nibbla turns purple, it starts to frown; if it is light pink, its fangs begin to show; and if the Nibbla is bright red, it swiftly bites the lead Kong then changes back into light pink. Additionally, an unnamed Nibbla is a "sort-of" Animal Buddy who follows Kiddy Kong and Dixie Kong through level "Fish Food Frenzy" as a friend to the Kongs — so long as the player keeps him well-fed (although in any other level, he is an enemy only). If Kiddy and Dixie continually feed Nibbla Kocos, he will remain blue, smiling contently as he follows the Kongs throughout the level. However, if the Kongs feed Nibbla one of the many spiny-shelled Lurchins scattered throughout the level, or simply fails to feed him enough, his mood will gradually worsen until he finally satisfies his hunger by attacking a Kong.

Nibbla's status as an animal buddy is debatable, as his feeding requirements act much like an obstacle and inconvenience. However, for his help in clearing enemies from the level, he may be considered "partly" an animal friend, in fact one of the games Bonus Barrels is only reachable with Nibbla's aid. Also of note, there is a "No Nibbla" sign at the end of "Fish Food Frenzy", but no reward is given when bringing Nibbla past it.

Nibblas are red-orange, carnivorous fish enemies in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! that behave like Snapjaws from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Nibblas are entirely invulnerable to attack, and they swim through the water quickly, following Dixie and Kiddy around a level. If the Kongs fall into the water, the Nibbla charges into them and bites. One difference that Nibblas have from Snapjaws is that they cannot swim through walls. They do not return in Donkey Kong Land III, unlike most enemies.

When it is blue, the Nibbla is happy; to keep this mood, Nibbla has to eat Kocos along the way. If Nibbla turns purple, it starts to frown; if it is light pink, its fangs begin to show; and if the Nibbla is bright red, it swiftly bites the lead Kong then changes back into light pink. If Nibbla eats a Lurchin, its mood worsens, although there is Lurchin near the end of the level that guards the path to a Bonus Barrel. A No Animal Sign of Nibbla appears at the end of Fish Food Frenzy, but it is different from those of the actual Animal Friends because the Nibbla does not cross and stays behind. Aside from levels, a Nibbla's only other appearance is as a photograph in Dixie Kong's Photo Album, categorized as part of the Aquatic Attackers enemy class. In the remake, they also appear in the Pacifica level Stormy Seas and the Kaos Kore level Lightning Lookout.
