Jumbo Ray
A Jumbo Ray.
First appearance New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009)
Latest appearance Mario Party 10 (2015)
Variant of Manta

Jumbo Rays[1] are a type of Manta that first appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. These rays are green and wear a pair of swim goggles. They have the ability to leap and fly through the sky, so Mario and company can stand on them as platforms until they disappear into the fog. Their appearance and manner are similar to those of Dolphins. Despite being Mantas, they lack the usual pair of cephalic fins around their mouths, and instead resemble eagle rays with their slightly elongated snouts.

History

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Mario, at World 5-5, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
A group of three Jumbo Rays fly through the clouds

Jumbo Rays appear only in World 5-5 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Here, Mario and company must use them to traverse the level. Jumbo Rays make a whistling noise when the player jumps on them similar to when the player jumps on a Para-Beetle. However, the Jumbo Rays' sound does not go up the music scale as the Para-Beetle does. Jumbo Rays are not enemies and cannot hurt Mario.

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX

In Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, a single Jumbo Ray makes an appearance near the beginning of the underwater zone of Tropical Coast. Unlike other appearances, it does not fly in the air.

Mario Party series

Mario Party: Island Tour

Jumbo Rays made their Mario Party debut in Mario Party: Island Tour. A large group of Jumbo Rays can be seen in the background of the Hot-Air Hijinks minigame mode. Another one can be seen in the background of one of the scenes depicted in the minigame Get Reel. Sometimes one can be seen at the hot-air balloon in the minigame Point 'n' Shoot.

Mario Party 10

Jumbo Rays reappear in Mario Party 10 in the backgrounds of the minigames Bouncy Brawl and Bubble Squabble.

Mario Golf: World Tour

Jumbo Rays appear in Mario Golf: World Tour where they fly around in the background of the Sky Island course.
