History
Fifty-four years before the events of "Escape from Koopatraz", Gramps was sentenced to Koopatraz State Prison. After twenty-four years, Gramps came to be Koopatraz's only prisoner for a long time.
Thirty years later, Gramps is introduced to his new cellmates, Mario, Luigi and Toad. Upon hearing Toad's name, Gramps asks if he is related to the Fungusville Toads, which leads to them discovering that they are grandfather and grandson, and they finally get to hug each other for the first time.
Mario eventually engineers an escape plan from Koopatraz, and after receiving Gramps' advice, he smuggles a few forks out of the mess hall, which the male prisoners use to dig out of their cell with. Unfortunately, this plan leads to Mario getting caught by Warden Koopa, who sentences them all to hard labor. However, Mario is able to come up with another escape plan, which involves fooling a Goomba, whose keys he steals to rescue Gramps and the other prisoners.
