Super Piranha Plants are giant Piranha Plants found in the game New Super Mario Bros. and its sequel. They are not to be confused with the Piranhacus Giganticus, which acts just like regular Piranha Plants. Unlike most Piranha Plants, Super Piranha Plants are never found inside pipes due to their gigantic size. Mario must shoot three fireballs at one to destroy the monstrous plant. When defeated, they will give up eight coins instead of the usual one coin. In the sequel, this is reduced to three coins. Another similar enemy that appear only in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the Super Venus Fire Trap.
A giant purple Piranha Plant appears in Mario Superstar Baseball that could be a Super Piranha Plant.

There is also a suspiciously large Piranha Plant that cameos in Dry Dry Desert of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!; it can be found in the middle of a large pit of quicksand. It would eat any racing kart that entered the pit. Only the plant's head is seen, but it is even larger than Petey Piranha's. It looks like Petey, but is green, has white spots, and brown thorns. If the racer goes into the pit while using a star, the giant Cactus plant will not eat him or her.
In Super Mario Galaxy, there is a sub-species called Prickly Piranha Plant.
Prickly Piranha Plants reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2, along with a newer version called the Spiky Piranha Plant.
