Buzzes are bee-like robots in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. They, for the most part, replaced the wasp enemies, Zingers, from the first couple games in the Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land series. Just like Zingers, they're immune to jump attacks. Buzzes are robotic; their legs are metal and they have a buzzsaw in their abdomen. However, their bodies seem to be organic, as do their wings.

Donkey Kong Country 3

In Donkey Kong Country 3, Buzzes were very common, usually posing as irritating obstacles. There are two Buzz variants. Green Buzzes can be defeated by a thrown Barrel or by a certain Animal Buddy, but the tougher red Buzzes can only be defeated by a TNT Barrel, an Invincibility Barrel, with the fireballs launched by Krosshair in Krack Shot Kroc, or with the Rocket Barrel (SNES version only).

Buzzes are absent in Lakeside Limbo, Skidda's Row, Koindozer Klamber, Poisonous Pipeline and all underwater stages.

Donkey Kong Land III

In this game Buzzes behave the same way they did in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble, but were colored grey due to the Game Boy's color limitations. In the Game Boy Color version (which was exclusive to Japan), they appear green.

Diddy Kong Pilot

Beta footage for the cancelled GBA game Diddy Kong Pilot reveals that pink Buzzes were going to appear in the game as items. When used, Buzz would home in on the nearest pilot and cause them to crash on contact. The game would've also featured a blue variant, which would home in on the lead driver (similar to Spiny Shells in Mario Kart).[1]

Trivia

  • Their name is a play on words of the onomatopoeia 'buzz', representing the sound that bees make when they fly, and the 'buzz'-saw in their abdomens.
  • Although Buzzes are colored pink in official art, there are no Buzzes in-game with that color.
  • Buzzes may have inspired the Mecha-Zingers seen in Frantic Factory, in the game Donkey Kong 64.
