Tip of the Month

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

When having a discussion with someone, always remember that there is another person on the other side of your screen. It's easy to get mad and say something cruel, because you can't see them or their reaction. You never know what that person is going through in their life, so at the very least, be civil to them.

Poll Committee Discussion

Written by: Andymii (talk)

New Members!

Packy is still not available, so I'm doing Poll Committee Discussion again (don't worry; it's fun!). You may recall last month we announced that we had open spots. We received way more applications than we could take in, and we had to narrow it down to three new members.

We would like to welcome RandomYoshi (talk), Bazooka Mario (talk), and Stargazing (talk) to the team. Congratulations! If you applied and didn't make the cut, don't be discouraged; we'll announce whenever another spot is open. Additionally, we will have our annual Chairperson election in June.

Merry (late) Christmas, everyone!

Analysis

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash: So upon release, this game got pretty bad reviews, calling it (in a nutshell) bland and unoriginal. I guess you all agree; only 23% of voters showed any sign of interest in buying the game. At 1,764 votes, this poll also happened to have the lowest voter turnout in Poll Committee history.

What is your favorite Mario Kart feature?: Two-person karts seems to be our favorite gimmick. I'm pretty surprised (and disappointed) that Nintendo hasn't brought it back; it's a perfect way for an experienced player and a new player to enjoy the game together without frustration. Maybe for Mario Kart 9?

Editing Super Mario Wiki: Yes, some of you (72, to be exact) fail to realize that this is NOT Wikipedia, failing to see the gigantic MarioWiki logo in the corner. Wow. Our poll shows a majority of voters visit this site solely because they're bored. Surprisingly, not many of you have chose the "watchlist" option, even though I personally use it extensively.

Favorite soundtrack: At 19 choices, this poll was so long that we had to change our archive coding. It also made the Main Page extremely long. That was pretty ugly; because of this, we've made a policy that our polls will no longer exceed 10 choices. Anyway, at 1,041 votes, you all definitely love the full orchestra sound of Mario Galaxy; no surprise there. At the opposite side of the spectrum, Mario Tennis/Mario Golf music probably isn't too amazing, at a measly 12 votes.

Other genres: A dream-come-true for me would be an open-world game within Mushroom City. Clearly, most of you agree. Make it a reality, Nintendo! On the other hand, don't make a Mario horror game. No one wants that.

That's about all I have to say. Thank you for reading this month's Poll Committee Discussion, and please enjoy the holidays!

Forum Update

It's that time of month again! That's right, it's the Forum Update, where I spend as long as possible talking about pretty much nothing, because that's all that happens here nowadays. The forums are dead. Like Santa. Merry Christmas, kids.

So, let's see if November was remotely interesting.

Thread of the Month

November's Thread of the Month went, with bibbangs, to googlegrenade by 2257, showcasing a number of dubious translations that went unnoticed on the Wiki for too long. I don't even think @SuperMarioFact found these. Also, there was some pretty interesting discussion about translation between 22 and Walkazo. Also, making this Thread of the Month makes it look like I'm actually paying attention to the Wiki.

A very close runner up was Javelin's thread me rn, though it kinda requires some context first. Nabber's so i went on the wiki for once also raised some interesting questions.

Also, after actually playing through Undertale, I would like to upgrade my review from a few months ago from "it's good" to "it's really good".

Various Directors

First article: December Report, Issue I
Last article: Still Going
Sections Written: Various sections and Director's Notes throughout The 'Shroom
Positions held: Director, Sub-team leader (some), Contributor

Hello, readers! I'm your Spotlight manager and Pipe Plaza Director, Yoshi876. Welcome to Retro Feature, a section in which I delve deep into the archives to bring you the best blasts from the past. This time I bring a Director's Election. Something that you may read about in a bit.

The Directors have been around since the start of The 'Shroom, they are in effect, the editor of our publication, checking that everything is in order before release. Most Directors write sections before or during their tenure, like SMB or Tucayo, whilst others only contribute Director's Notes, which were the equivalent to the current Opening and Closing Statements, just sometimes with more cats. One of the first 'Shroom Directors was Wayoshi, but when the first elections were held, it was Glowsquid who triumphed against him, winning 69% of the vote. The next year, Stooben was victorious, having won 85% of the vote, he followed this up the next year with another victory, though only gaining 47% of the vote. In 2010, Super Mario Bros. beat Marioguy1 to the Director's position, winning 83% of the vote, he would then follow these victories up with successive wins in 2011 (with 50%) and 2012 (with 53%), it was so close in the 2012 elections, that Super Mario Bros. offered to co-direct with the other candidate, Tucayo. In 2013, only one candidate, Superchao, stood, and for the 2014 elections the same happened again, just with Super Mario Bros. being the only candidate. 'Shroom Director applicants have been falling away in recent years, so I wonder whether 2015 will yield a new result. Only your votes can decide.

Director Election

Our current director is retiring, so we have.... *drumroll* a Director Election!

Director Election

It's that time of the year again, the Director Election!

What is This?

  • This is an election to decide the new director of The 'Shroom. Naturally, the one with the most votes wins the title.
  • If a director retires, then an election is held again in the latest issue of The 'Shroom.
  • An election takes place every December Issue regardless whether an election has already been held that year.
  • The current director may run in elections if they wish.
  • This election will start December 20nd.
  • In the January issue (18:00 Jan. 19), the winner will be announced, and they will have at most a week to announce their Core Staff in the comments section at the bottom of the page, as well as their calendar.
  • There will be a debate between the candidates, please also state when you can participate in the debate in order to get this to work.
  • You must submit your campaign at least a week ({{{2}}}) before the release of the January issue, or else it will be considered invalid and removed by the Core Staff!
It is currently 09:45, November 19th (EST/EDT)

This election ends {{{3}}} (EST/EDT)
Candidate Rules
  • Anyone may run for director during any time of the election (except in Overtime), but they must have a forum account.
  • A user may only run for themselves, another user cannot nominate them.
  • All candidates must say what changes will they make. They can also campaign to promote voting for them.
    • Campaigns must use acceptable grammar (judgment is given to the Core Staff).
    • Campaigns must be original. Nobody is allowed to steal another candidate's ideas. However, if campaigns, for the most part, differ from each other or have key elements to which the candidates disagree on, then sharing a few ideas here and there is allowed.
    • No joke campaigns are allowed to be ran.
    • No bribing voters is allowed.
  • Candidates can also hold debates among them in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
  • This is what a voting section should look like:
===Candidate===
What will you do, etc.
 #'''X'''
 #'''X'''
 #'''X'''

So as you can see, that candidate has three votes.

Voter Rules
  • Voters may vote with their username, no signatures allowed, or they opt to list themselves as X ('''X''') in order for their vote to not be immediately identifiable– note that people may see who voted in such a manner in the page editing history.
  • Anonymous editors (who do not sign in to edit) are not allowed to cast votes. If you have an account and are simply logged out, please sign in to your account. If you want to vote and you do not have an account, simply create one, sign in, and vote!
  • Voters may only cast one vote.
  • Voters may change their vote at any time while the election is in progress.
Ties
  • In the case of a tie, the Core Staff will establish a runoff election for another week between the tying candidates. Ties beyond that will be handled if they come up by a process decided by the Core Staff.
Duties of the Director

This is what you must do if you win, so read carefully.

  • The director must accept or decline all new writers' ideas for sections they want to write.
  • The director assigns a section to users who want to write, but don't know what to write.
  • The director gives out a warning to users who have not yet sent in their sections one week before The 'Shroom is due.
  • The director puts The 'Shroom together, and edits the front page, the single page, the 'Shroombox template, and the Shroom Issue template.
  • The director writes the Director's Notes section, which comments about the month's issue.
  • The director includes the due date of the next 'Shroom in the Director's Notes, and in the Shroomwarning template.
  • The director gets to choose their Core Staff, this is: Fake News, Fun Stuff, Music & Art, Pipe Plaza, Critic Corner directors and Sub-Director.
  • The director must send applications to users who want to become writers.

Looks easy? It is not. So get ready.

Now get out there and go!

Jaffffey: I've rearranged my schedule quite a bit, so I should actually be on for around 3 hours a day, which is more than enough time to get things situated. :D S-Y: lol Dom: I actually feel some guilt about that too. While I have the feeling that some of my support votes may be "fan votes" (for lack of a better term), I feel more than confident that I won't let any of my supporters down. — Stooben Rooben 21:50, 3 January 2009 (EST)
Yeah, even though Stooben is popular, i think he is responsible and hardworking. Luigifreak

Yeah, it's a good thing Stooben is both popular and reliable, as I wouldn't support him even if he was my friend but not a good User worthy of being a Director. I appreciate the support guys, thanks! As for new ideas, I do have a few. I thought a section where users could submit questions, suggestions, and comments on the paper could be cool; then the next month, the Director/staff of the paper could respond. I also think after my talk with Son of Suns that a section that allowed fan work should be allowed. As he pointed out, and I have always thought, a lot of The 'Shroom contains information that can be found in articles already. There's a few other ideas in the rough, but I'm still working on them. — Stooben Rooben 20:46, 15 January 2009 (EST)

I'm going to try and work the due dates to fit my schedule, as well as make it easier for others. Also, what problem is that? — Stooben Rooben 05:18, 19 January 2009 (EST)

Upcoming Games

Written by: Paper Yoshi (talk)

Hello, beloved readers, and welcome to my second and last Upcoming Games issue of the year!! First of all, I apologize for deviating from the release schedule so early on; I was extremely busy with my finals (which I passed, by the way), so that prevented me from writing in November.

Also, I would like to thank everyone who voted for Upcoming Games and helped it win the August SOTM; I must admit it's thrilling to see people still appreciate my writing in this section, and it only encourages me to keep doing so, only in a much lower scale now due to time constraints.

Anyway, I guess that's all as far as news go, so let's check some of the Mario-related games being released, and (hopefully) purchased by thousands of fans all around the world, as I write this.

Smashing Through!!

After the release of Mario Tennis Open for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, Mario Tennis is back to the home console realm for the first time since the re-release of Mario Power Tennis for the Nintendo Wii in 2009, as part of the New Play Control! series.

The gameplay in Ultra Smash is similar to previous Mario Tennis installments, with the same basic controls from other games in the series. Additionally, Chance Shots from Tennis Open make a return, working the same way as they did before.

A screenshot of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
A doubles Mega Battle, with Mario and Bowser playing against Peach and Toad.

The game may be played with three different controllers: the Wii U GamePad, the Wii Pro Controller, or the Wii Remote. However, unlike the previous home console title, the Wii version of Mario Power Tennis, Ultra Smash does not support motion controls, meaning players can only use the Wii Remote on its side to control the characters, akin to the way Virtual Console NES games are played on the Wii and Wii U.

Although Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash does include the classic tennis experience found in previous installments, the default mode, called Mega Battle, presents a new twist in the form of Mega Mushrooms, which randomly spawn on the court during the match, allowing the players to grow, improving both their offense and defense. The game includes other three local modes, namely Classic Tennis, Knockout Battles and the minigame Mega Ball Rally, while also supporting online matches.

As for the playable characters, while the usual crew of Mario, Luigi, Peach and co. are available from the get-go, one notable addition to the default roster is Rosalina, making her debut in the series.

Paper Brothers

(Just as a heads-up, since Pyro (talk), this section's former writer, has pretty much covered all there is to say about this game without major spoilers, I'll try not to be too repetitive when talking about it.)

Anyway, when I actually figure out how to write "anyway" without hitting the "h" key on my keyboard, we can talk about the next game that hit stores, according to the release schedule. It's none other than Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, where silly dialogue meets stationery characters.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam screenshot.
The three heroes in action.

In a nutshell, since I'm not here to tell you guys the whoooooooole story, it begins with Luigi and Toad, who are at the attic of Peach's Castle, trying to be helpful by searching for the source of a drought. They see a hole above a bookcase, so Luigi investigates that; meanwhile, a Scaredy Rat enters the room and starts chasing Toad. As it approaches Luigi, he gets scared (surprise, surprise) and falls. Although it might seem that everything is ok, the dust on the floor (attics...) causes Luigi to sneeze, which, in turn, knocks him into the bookcase, making a book fall open onto the floor, releasing the Paper Mario world within it.

At first, Mario and Luigi only need to rescue the Paper Toads scattered all around the Mushroom Kingdom, but later, as Paper Mario joins them, the trio founds out that both Bowser and Paper Bowser have kidnapped the respective Princesses (another surprise...), meaning it's up to them to rescue Peach and Paper Peach.

The controls are very similar to previous Mario & Luigi installments; Mario uses the A Button button and Luigi uses B Button, while Paper Mario uses the Y Button button. Since Mario now has two characters following him, instead of just his little brother, they are able to jump simultaneously with the X Button button. Players are also able to trigger special jump and hammer actions by combining different buttons, as is the case with other titles in the series, either on the overworld or during battles.

Written by: Banjonator1 (talk) and Gutsehman (talk)

Anton{Politoed} poses
<banjonator1>: Good evening and welcome to a Christmastime special of Banjo and Gutseh's Something Something at Late Night Interviews!
<banjonator1>: We have a special guest, our very own Anton Claus, here to spread a little holiday joy!
<Anton{Politoed}>: are you calling me fat
<banjonator1>: i'm calling you jolly
<Anton{Politoed}>: >:[
<GutsehMan>: anton are you taking 'jolly' as an insult
<banjonator1>: Please don't put me on the naughty list i still haven't got splatoon and i was railing on getting it for christmas
<banjonator1>: Related, how's the list coming? Can we hear who in the community has been naughty and nice
<banjonator1>: ?
<Anton{Politoed}>: I guess it's ok, I won't have to ban you guys from the awards just yet
<Anton{Politoed}>: well
<Anton{Politoed}>: I'm on the nice list, of course
<banjonator1>: congrats
<Anton{Politoed}>: I went shopping today and 22 didn't join me despite me asking him to do so about 3 dozen times
<Anton{Politoed}>: so he's on the naughty list
<GutsehMan>: can i ask what was on the shopping list
<Anton{Politoed}>: the rest of the list is spoilers
<Anton{Politoed}>: well today I planned on doing all of my christmas shopping for everyone
<banjonator1>: no gutseh you don't want to know what you got for antonmas
<Anton{Politoed}>: while I did get a few things, mostly gift cards, and a new 2ds and a bunch of games for my niece
<Anton{Politoed}>: I ended up splurging on goodies for myself
<banjonator1>: sounds rad
<Anton{Politoed}>: I'll probably get the rest of the things the night before and just pretend I put thought into it
<banjonator1>: anything you're hoping to recieve for yourself?
<Anton{Politoed}>: satisfaction in life, an end to loneliness, a stable future, some reese's cups
<Anton{Politoed}>: cash
<Anton{Politoed}>: the older I get the less specifics I want and instead I just want people to fund my own shopping trips
<banjonator1>: i can provide you with at least 3/5 of those; maybe i should get in on secret santa
<Anton{Politoed}>: I'll let you in on a secret for secret santa
<banjonator1>: anything you want for christmas, guts?
<Anton{Politoed}>: there's a secret secret santa
<Anton{Politoed}>: that turb didn't tell you about
<GutsehMan>: i don't really know what i want for christmas
<GutsehMan>: outside of christmassy things
<GutsehMan>: and milk
<banjonator1>: is turb on the naughty list
<Anton{Politoed}>: it's the one that I signed up for because all of the gifts are naughty~
<GutsehMan>: but i tell you what
<GutsehMan>: i saw my daddy-o man
<Anton{Politoed}>: I'm also the only one who signed up so it's a gift for myself
<GutsehMan>: make a steam account earlier today
<Anton{Politoed}>: milk is an excellent choice
<GutsehMan>: then he opened up mine
<GutsehMan>: just to gift me 3 things
<Anton{Politoed}>: what kind of milk
<banjonator1>: hold up guts what kind of milk
<GutsehMan>: well
<banjonator1>: as you can see, this is important
<GutsehMan>: *thinks*
<GutsehMan>: chocolate milk tbh
<Anton{Politoed}>: not my top pick, but it's within reason
<Anton{Politoed}>: you did well
<GutsehMan>: i was gonna put some marshmallows with it
<GutsehMan>: make it warm you know
<GutsehMan>: christmassy
<Anton{Politoed}>: do you just warm up chocolate milk instead of getting hot cocoa
<banjonator1>: milk isnt christmassy unless it composes hot chocolate
<Anton{Politoed}>: I guess it does remove the extra step of stirring, but I haven't tried that yet myself
<GutsehMan>: it all depends you know
<GutsehMan>: like what sounds easier
<GutsehMan>: getting a dang old package of hot cocoa
<GutsehMan>: or just taking chocolate milk and warming it up
<banjonator1>: christmas confession: i hate eggnog with a burning passion
<Anton{Politoed}>: it's ok, me too
<GutsehMan>: i have never had eggnog
<GutsehMan>: am i missing out
<Anton{Politoed}>: good, you remain pure
<banjonator1>: you're not missing much
<GutsehMan>: anyway yeah i saw my daddy-o man gift me 3 games on steam
<GutsehMan>: but i haven't checked
<GutsehMan>: for the sake of purity
<Anton{Politoed}>: hey wasn't this interview supposed to be about me
<GutsehMan>: well yes
<Anton{Politoed}>: I dressed up nice for this and we're focusing all on you >:[
<GutsehMan>: you've brought christmas joy to our little interview show
<Anton{Politoed}>: oh, :)
<banjonator1>: gutseh isn't pulling his share as usual so i have to resort to asking him questions ;^)
<GutsehMan>: >:(
<GutsehMan>: alright fine i got a
<GutsehMan>: i got a question you meanie
<banjonator1>: (ilu guts)
<GutsehMan>: anton
<Anton{Politoed}>: gutseh
<GutsehMan>: who's the GRINCHIEST GRINCH on the boards that you know
<banjonator1>: good one, guts
<Anton{Politoed}>: wow you're looking for blood, huh
<banjonator1>: i trust you to answer this question with tact and proficiency
<Anton{Politoed}>: honestly I haven't seen really anyone too grinchy lately
<Anton{Politoed}>: sure I can dig up some demons from the past
<Anton{Politoed}>: and no this totally isn't a PR-safe comment, it's true
<banjonator1>: (yeah to be fair we've all mellowed out quite nicely)
<Anton{Politoed}>: it makes it harder for me to put people on my naughty list; there's a quota I need to achieve, you know
<banjonator1>: any real fond christmas memories, particularly from younger times?
<banjonator1>: it can be game-related, or not
<Anton{Politoed}>: well despite its random eccentricities, my childhood was actually pretty boring
<Anton{Politoed}>: my parents didn't let us get too many games because they wanted us to be super smart
<Anton{Politoed}>: I only got the n64 when I was like 12 because our edgy neighbor gave it to us for $20 with a bunch of games
<Anton{Politoed}>: although a few years ago we spent christmas at my uncle's house and he proceeded to think that an airplane was the aliens finally coming to get him
<Anton{Politoed}>: and later on in that night my cousin came home drunk, too a scythe off the wall, and chased me around the house trying to behead me
<Anton{Politoed}>: maybe that was on new year's, who knows, it's all in the same week pretty much
<GutsehMan>: why was there a scythe on your wall
<Anton{Politoed}>: ambiance
<banjonator1>: god damn i hate having such a not dysfunctional family sometimes, i wish my life was more like a tim allen sitcom christmas special
<Anton{Politoed}>: roseanne had the best holiday specials
<Anton{Politoed}>: halloween was always fun and silly while every other holiday was filled with a family crisis
<banjonator1>: my parents got me a gamecube with metroid prime (because she thought it was related to transformers), super mario sunshine, the spyro game for gamecube, and jimmy neutron attack of the twonkies
<banjonator1>: roseanne was great
<Anton{Politoed}>: have you ever watched her reality show, Roseanne's Nuts
<banjonator1>: (i proceeded to suck at all of the above games)
<Anton{Politoed}>: about her life on a macadamia nut farm in hawaii
<banjonator1>: I remember my dad being really pissed at her because she didn't take the national anthem seriously
<banjonator1>: and yes, i vaguely remember the show
<Anton{Politoed}>: "jimmy neutron attack of the twinks", banjo is this a window into your childhood
<Anton{Politoed}>: is this why you are the way you are
<banjonator1>: anton i've come to realize repression is natural and has a biological function so stahp
<GutsehMan>: jimmy neutron was a pretty good show as far as i'm concerned
<Anton{Politoed}>: I can't stop, I'm sorry
<GutsehMan>: at least for a young'un
<Anton{Politoed}>: wanna know what a good movie is for all ages
<Anton{Politoed}>: Legally Blonde
<banjonator1>: This is the point where the interview runs out of questions and degrades into banter. Which is just fine, but as soon as we start to run dry, I'm gonna wrap it up, lol
<banjonator1>: and legally blonde was great
<GutsehMan>: i have vague memories of legally blonde
<banjonator1>: make them less vague
<GutsehMan>: but i remember it being pretty good
<Anton{Politoed}>: we should all watch it again
<Anton{Politoed}>: it will be my secular winter gift to you
<GutsehMan>: i mean i guess i got a question
<Anton{Politoed}>: come to my place and I'll have some meat and cheese trays set up
<GutsehMan>: !!! meat and cheese !!!
<banjonator1>: Christ-mas anton, christ-mas
<banjonator1>: >:[
<GutsehMan>: i thought it was chris t. mas
<Anton{Politoed}>: idk who this Chris guy is but this interview is supposed to be about me
<GutsehMan>: i just realized i want chris t. mas as a warioware character
<GutsehMan>: make him jimmy t.'s north pole cousin
<Anton{Politoed}>: also banjo you realize my name is taken from the founder of the church of satan right
<Anton{Politoed}>: this entire time I've been corrupting your minds
GutsehMan starts kinda losing it
<Anton{Politoed}>: ono gutseh got into the eggnog
<GutsehMan>: e.g.g.n.o.g
<banjonator1>: eggnog is such garbage
<GutsehMan>: hey i was gonna ask my question
<banjonator1>: shoot
<GutsehMan>: alright so you know
<GutsehMan>: the big old last smash direct is tomorrow
<GutsehMan>: and stuff is gonna happen
<GutsehMan>: so like
<GutsehMan>: who would you want in smash
<Anton{Politoed}>: kamek
<Anton{Politoed}>: no doubt
<GutsehMan>: you know what i was thinking of
<GutsehMan>: like yesterday
<banjonator1>: people who think kameks stage in mario party ds sucked are little weenies
<GutsehMan>: like
<GutsehMan>: since cloud is in smash
<banjonator1>: who can't handle kamek's japers
<GutsehMan>: and there's clearly a working relationship between the smash team and square right now
<GutsehMan>: ...please tell me we can get like
<GutsehMan>: a geno mii costume or something
<GutsehMan>: just to shut those guys up
<banjonator1> well that wasn't...
<banjonator1> wait never mind i lost my train of thought
<banjonator1> time to edt that out in post pro
<banjonator1>: Well, i think that wraps this up pretty nicely.
<Anton{Politoed}>: I'm good at making people lose their train of thought
<Anton{Politoed}>: just ask stoob
banjonator1 is now unable to edit his flub out post-pro because anton's comment would lose context
<Anton{Politoed}>: I've single-handedly delayed at least half a dozen shroom mafia deadlines by just blabbing at him
<banjonator1>: Goodnight!
*Interview ends*

<Anton{Politoed}> that was quaintly informal
<banjonator1> it usually is
<Anton{Politoed}> this will be my first foray into pipe plaza
<Anton{Politoed}> soon my influence will reach all of the shroom
<banjonator1> one time we got really deep with shoey for a little while about the future of the wiki
<banjonator1> it was cathartic
<banjonator1> but mostly interviews are low-tier chat banter
<Anton{Politoed}> I can get deep, you just caught me in a different mood
<Anton{Politoed}> there'll have to be an Anton: Part 2 interview soon
*Lights shut off.*
<Anton{Politoed}> the edgy sequel
<Anton{Politoed}> and then there can be a Part 3
<Anton{Politoed}> where all of the characters are portrayed by different actors
