Locations that actually exist on Earth, or that originate in real mythology rather than being original to the Super Mario franchise. This list excludes locations that have solely been mentioned on Mario is Missing!'s Globulator.
Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa (Amharic: አዲስ አበባ, Ādīsi Ābeba; Oromo: Finfinnee) is the capital city of Ethiopia. When Luigi travels to Nairobi in Mario is Missing!, he does not know where he is; a businesswoman in the city gives him a hint by saying he is "in the largest city between Addis Ababa and Zanzibar." The city is also listed on the Globulator in all versions of the game, though it is not visitable.
Alaska
Alaska (Aleut: Alax̂sxax̂; Alutiiq: Alas'kaaq; Central Yupik: Alaskaq; Inuktitut: ᐊᓛᓯᑲ, Alaasika; Inupiaq: Alaasikaq; Russian: Аляска, Alyaska; Tlingit: Anáaski) is one of the fifty states of the United States of America. Together with Hawaii, it is one of only two non-contingous states that make up the US, bordering the northwestern end of Canada. It is also notable for featuring the highest Native American population in the country. In "Marianne and Luigeena", Marianne tells Luigi that Luigeena went to look for him and Mario, but is yet to return, and decides to go look for her sister. As Marianne leaves, Luigi suggests for her to check Alaska, implying that he wants her to leave for a long time. Additionally, in the SNES version of Mario is Missing!, the state's largest city, Anchorage, is mentioned on the Globulator.
Alps
The Alps (German: Alpen; French: Alpes; Italian: Alpi; Slovene: Alpe) are a great mountain range in Europe. They are mentioned in the game Mario is Missing! by a citizen of Rome, who says that if Luigi brought Italian shoes from home, they could "climb the Alps for a peek of Rome."
The Swiss Cheese Alps from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "Koopenstein" are named after the Alps.
Argentina
Argentina is a country in South America which occupies the majority of the continent's southern half. In Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the capital and primate city of Buenos Aires; in the PC version, the Globulator additionally mentions the city of Bahía Blanca. Argentina is also one of several countries viewable on the Globe in WarioWare: Twisted!.
Arizona
Arizona (Navajo: Hoozdo Hahoodzo; O'odham: Alĭ ṣonak) is one of the fifty United States of America, notable for the sharp contrast between its arid southern half and its verdant northern one. In NBA Street V3, Arizona serves as the home state for the Phoenix Suns.
Biafra
Biafra was a partially recognized country in West Africa which existed from 1967 to 1970, seceding from Nigeria and dissolving in the wake of the Nigerian Civil War. In King Koopa's Kool Kartoons, King Koopa jokingly asks an audience member "Where're you from? Biafra?!" Reportedly, this was an ad-lib made by actor Christopher Collins at a group of African-American children.[1]
Brazil
Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil) is a country in South America, known for being one of the world's largest countries by both land mass (fifth-biggest) and population (seventh most populous); it is also famous for containing a significant chunk of the Amazon rain forest, the largest of its kind in the world, and for featuring the largest Japanese diaspora community on Earth. In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the episode "7 Continents for 7 Koopas" sees Hop Koopa turn the Amazon (presumably including the portions in Brazil) into a parking lot. Meanwhile, in the SNES and PC versions of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the city of Rio de Janeiro; the latter version of the game additionally lists Belem, Porto Alegre, and São Paulo on the Globulator.
Rio de Janerio also serves as the setting for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The Bronx
The Bronx is a borough of New York, United States. It is referenced multiple times in the Super Mario TV series.
It is referenced twice in the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! live-action segments. In "Day of the Orphan", while waiting for Edison to make his move in a game of chess, Luigi tries to hurry his friend up by reminding him of a blackout in the Bronx that he should tend. In "Rowdy Roddy's Rotten Pipes", Luigi tries to convince Rowdy Roddy Piper that his reformatted bagpipes are actually a vacuum cleaner manufactured by the fictitious "McBronx Vacuum Company", which he claims is from Scotland. Additionally, in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Recycled Koopa", after turning all the citizens of Brooklyn into Koopa Zombies, King Koopa announces he will soon conquer the Bronx, along with Manhattan and Queens, with his Crud Cannon.
The Bronx is mentioned in the Super Smash Bros. series in reference to the Bronx-native Little Mac.
Mario briefly references the Bronx when walking through Dinohattan for the first time in the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, where he replies to Luigi's speculation that they ended up in a coma and woke up in Brooklyn of the future that they may have even arrived at "the Bronx of today" in regards to the dystopic locale. The Bronx also gets a brief reference in The Super Mario Bros. Movie during the brothers' Super Mario Bros. Plumbing commercial when Mario flicks a toy van across a map to show the range of their business from Brooklyn to Queens. The toy van briefly veers off-course towards the Bronx on the map, but Luigi picks it up and readjusts its course.
Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire (Latin: Imperium Byzantinum; Greek: Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία, Vyzantiní Aftokratoría) was, as the name implies, an empire which existed from the division of the Roman Empire in 395 to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. At its height in 555, it spanned most of the original Roman Empire's former territory in the Mediterranean. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, a policewoman in Istanbul notes how the city was previously the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.
California
California is one of the fifty states of the United States of America. It is notable for its arid climate and for being a major cultural hub in the US. The cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles (including Hollywood) are located there. Marilyn's Uncle Troy is known to live somewhere in California. Additionally, in the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Los Angeles is viewable on the Globulator.
Furthermore, in NBA Street V3, California is the home state of the Golden State Warriors, the LA Clippers, the LA Lakers, and the Sacramento Kings.
Canada
Canada (Inuktitut: ᑲᓇᑕ, Kanata; Cree: Kānatā) is a large country in the northernmost part of North America, located directly north of the contingent United States of America and east of the non-contingent US state of Alaska. While the country as a whole does not directly appear in the Super Mario franchise, it is obliquely represented on multiple occasions.
In Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits one of two different settings depending on the version: in the NES version, Luigi visits Montreal (which is merely listed on the Globulator in the SNES and PC versions), while in the PC version, he visits Toronto. Vancouver is also listed on the Globulator, with the PC version further mentioning Calgary, Ottawa, and Winnipeg.
Vancouver makes multiple other appearances in the Super Mario franchise. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is set in the city, which hosted the real-life 2010 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, in Mario Kart Tour, it serves as not only the namesake for the Vancouver Tour, but also the basis of the three Vancouver Velocity courses. Vancouver Velocity additionally appears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass.
Furthermore, in WarioWare: Twisted!, Canada appears as one of several countries that the player can view on the Globe, and in NBA Street V3, it is the home country of the Toronto Raptors.
Canberra
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. When Luigi travels to Sydney in Mario is Missing!, he meets a businesswoman who tells him that although Sydney is Australia's oldest and largest city, Canberra is its capital.
China
China (Chinese: 中國 (Traditional) / 中国 (Simplified); Pinyin: Zhōngguó; Jyutping: Zung1gwok3; Wade–Giles: Chung-kuo; Yale: Jūnggwó (Mandarin) / Jùnggwok / Jūnggwok (Cantonese)) is a country in East Asia. It is best known as the world's oldest continuous civilization, having emerged during the Paleolithic era and remaining intact despite numerous changes in government and territorial extent. In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Bully Koopa vandalizes the country's most famous landmark, the Great Wall of China, on orders from King Koopa.
China is also mentioned in two entries of the Mario Discovery Series. In Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the Chinese capital of Beijing; in the PC version, the Globulator additionally mentions the cities of Guangzhou, Lhasa, and Shanghai. Meanwhile, in Mario's Time Machine, Mario visits the Gobi Desert (which spans both China and Mongolia), learns about the cities of Cambuluc and Luoyang, and makes his acquaintance with one of China's emperors, Kublai Khan.
In WarioWare: Twisted!, China is one of several countries viewable on the Globe. Furthermore, both the Wii and DS versions of the first Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games are set in Beijing, the host city for the real-world 2008 Summer Olympics (which the game was released to coincide with).
Additionally, in 60-Byō Challenge! Luigi o Sukue!!, China is one of the incorrect answers for the question "What country issued postage stamps for the first time in the world?"
Colorado
Colorado is one of the fifty United States of America, notable for its geographic diversity and high standards of living. In NBA Street V3, Colorado serves as the home state for the Denver Nuggets.
East Germany
East Germany (German: Ostdeutschland; Russian: Восточная Германия, Vostochnaya Germaniya; Sorbian: Němska Šěrjowa (Upper) / Němska Štwórna (Lower)) was a country which, per its name, administered the eastern states of the region of Germany from 1949 until 1990, when it was absorbed into West Germany. While West Germany technically makes explicit appearances in the Super Mario franchise (due to the fact that the reunified Germany is officially an enlargement of it), its Eastern Bloc counterpart only obliquely appears through allusions and references. In Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the former East German capital (and present-day reunified German capital), Berlin, with a pamphlet on the Berlin Wall mentioning the country. Meanwhile, in the NES version of Mario's Time Machine, East Germany is alluded to when Mario helps the residents of Berlin recover a Sledgehammer needed to tear down the wall.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia (Amharic: ኢትዮጵያ, Ītiyop'iya; Oromo: Itiyoophiyaa; Somali: Itoobiya; Wolayta: Toophphiyaa; Tigrinya: ኢትዮጵያ, Ítiyop'iya; Afar: Itiyoppiya) is a country in Africa. Its capital city is Addis Ababa, which is mentioned on the Globulator. It is mentioned in the game Mario is Missing! as one of three countries (the others being Kenya and Tanzania) to be "eagerly excavated" in order to solve the mystery of where human beings first lived. In the PC version, the Globulator additionally lists Asmara; while this was technically correct at the time of the MS-DOS version's release, it was already claimed by Eritrea, which formalized its independence from Ethiopia several months later. The subsequent CD-ROM Deluxe version still incorrectly lists Asmara as Ethiopian rather than Eritrean.
Everglades
The Everglades (Mikasuki: Pahokee) are subtropical wetlands located in Florida, USA. It is mentioned twice in the Donkey Kong Country television series. It is first mentioned in the episode "Baby Kong Blues," during the song "My Wittle Evil One." King K. Rool states that Prince Junior Croc will rule the Everglades when he grows older. It is mentioned again in the episode "Four Weddings and a Coconut," during the song "The Banana Do-si-do." Donkey Kong states that Krusha and the Kritters will "promenade as you're dancing through the Everglades" as they do the Banana Do-si-do.
Florida
Florida is a peninsular state in the United States of America, one of fifty that make up the union. It is notable for being one of only two tropical states in the country, alongside Hawaii, reflected in its unique wildlife (though the northern portion of the state is merely subtropical). It is also notable for being the only contingent state in the US with a tropical climate, as well as for being the only state in the US with a coral reef. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, the city of Miami is viewable on the Globulator. Additionally, in NBA Street V3, Florida is the home state for the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic.
Fort Dix
Fort Dix is a United States Army post located south-southeast of Trenton, New Jersey. In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! live-action segment "Caught in a Draft", Sgt. Slaughter orders Ratagator to report to Fort Dix before leaving.
France
The French Republic (French: République française), commonly known as France, is a country in Western Europe located between Spain and Germany, known for its tumultuous political history in the 18th and 19th centuries which included the cyclical overthrow and establishment of several monarchies.
The nation's capital, Paris, makes several appearances throughout the Super Mario franchise. In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Paris is mentioned in "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", appears briefly in "7 Continents for 7 Koopas" (in which Kootie Pie Koopa turns all the paintings in the Louvre into portraits of herself), and serves as the setting of "Super Koopa". In Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits Paris, and in the PC version, the cities of Bordeaux, Lyon, and Marseille are listed on the Globulator. In the PC version of Mario's Time Machine, meanwhile, Mario visits Paris in order to recover a flask vital to the development of the rabies vaccine. In both Mario Kart Tour and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, Paris is the setting of the Paris Promenade course.
Additionally, in WarioWare: Twisted!, France is one of several countries viewable on the Globe. France also appears as one of the incorrect options for the question "The Japanese names of cabbage, celery, and parsley are connected to a foreign country. Where?" in 60-Byō Challenge! Luigi o Sukue!!.
Georgia
Georgia is one of the fifty states of the United States of America, notable for being the birthplace of late civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. and for being the host state for the 1996 Summer Olympics, which marked the game's 100th anniversary. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, the state capital, Atlanta, is mentioned on the Globulator. Additionally, in NBA Street V3, Georgia serves as the home state of the Atlanta Hawks.
Greece
Greece (Greek: Ελλάδα, Elláda / Ελλάς, Ellás) is a country in the Balkans region of Southeast Europe notable for being the historical home of multiple ancient city-states credited with forming the basis for modern Western civilization. In the SNES and PC versions of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the capital city, Athens; the latter version additionally lists Thessaloniki on the Globulator. Additionally, a pamphlet in Berlin mentions how Brandenburg Gate was designed to resemble the Acropolis of Athens, simply referred to as the "Greek Acropolis" in game (when in reality, ancient Greece had multiple acropolises), while a pamphlet in Cairo namedrops the ancient Greeks when discussing the Great Pyramid.
In Mario's Time Machine, meanwhile, Mario visits Athens to recover a copy of Plato's Republic and, in the NES version, the torch used to open the first ancient Olympic Games, when Bowser steals them. Athens also serves as the basis of the Athens Dash course in Mario Kart Tour and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass.
Additionally, in the unreleased game Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, three levels in the Ancient category are based on Greece.
Guinea
Guinea (Bambara: Gine; French: Guinée; N'Ko: ߖߌ߬ߣߍ߫; Pular: 𞤘𞤭𞤲𞤫; Wolof: Gine) is a country in West Africa. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, the capital city, Conakry, is mentioned on the Globulator. Guinea is also one of several countries viewable on the Globe in WarioWare: Twisted!.
Heaven
Heaven is a supernatural location often considered a place of residence for deities and the deceased in various religions, mythologies, and works of fiction. In the Donkey Kong Country episode "From Zero to Hero", during the scene where Bluster imagines his funeral, Funky tells the painting of Bluster to "hang ten for me on that killer wave in the sky", implying Heaven.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港, Xiānggǎng) is a small island and special administrative region of China, located in Asia. In "Mario and the Red Baron Koopa", Sam Shalam claims that one of his so-called "genuine Persian carpets" is in fact manufactured in Hong Kong, implying that it is unauthentic.
Illinois
Illinois is one of the fifty states that make up the United States of America. It is most notable for being the home state of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States (although Lincoln was born in Kentucky, he spent much of his life in Illinois and represented it in the US House of Representatives), reflected in the nickname "Land of Lincoln." In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Illinois' largest city, Chicago, is viewable on the Globulator. Additionally, in NBA Street V3, Illinois is the home state of the Chicago Bulls.
India
India (Hindi: भारत, Bhārat; Kannada: ಭಾರತ, Bhārata; Bengali: ভারত, Bhārata) is a large country in South Asia, known for being the most populous nation as of 2023. In Mario is Missing!, the city of Mumbai (under its pre-1995 name, Bombay) is mentioned on the Globulator. Luigi visits Bombay in the PC version, with the Globulator there additionally mentioning Kolkata (under its pre-2001 name, Calcutta) and Delhi. In Mario's Time Machine, Mario visits Calcutta in order to recover a flag stolen by Bowser. In the Club Nintendo comic "Sag niemals Holerö!", Mario briefly mentions India after Todojewski recommends that he go to a restaurant called the Taj Mahal, confusing it for the real-world mausoleum that it is named after.
In WarioWare: Twisted!, India is also one of several countries viewable on the Globe.
Indiana
Indiana is one of the fifty United States of America, located in the American Midwest. In NBA Street V3, it is the namesake and home state of the Indiana Pacers.
Iowa
Iowa (Lakota: Ayúȟwa) is one of the fifty states of the United States of America. In "Mush-Rumors", when Norman of Kansas and his family are lost in the Mushroom Kingdom, Norman guesses that they might have driven to Iowa.
Iran
Iran (Persian: ایران, Irān) is a country in West Asia. In Mario is Missing!, the capital city, Tehran, is listed on the Globulator, with the PC version additionally mentioning Abadan and Tabriz. In WarioWare: Twisted!, Iran is also one of several countries viewable on the Globe.
Ireland
The Republic of Ireland, commonly known simply as Ireland (Irish Gaelic: hÉireann, Irish: Éire; Ulster Scots: Airlann), is a country located in the British Isles in West Europe, occupying 85% of the eponymous island. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the republic's capital city, Dublin; in the NES and SNES versions, Dublin is viewable on the Globulator, but is not visitable. The PC version's Globulator additionally lists the country's second-largest city, Cork.
Israel
The State of Israel (Arabic: إسرائيل, Iisrayiyl; Hebrew: ישראל, Yisra'el) is a country in the Southern Levant region of West Asia, located west of Egypt. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits Jerusalem, the entirety of which is described as Israeli (despite the State of Palestine also claiming it as its capital); the Globulator in this version additionally mentions Tel Aviv-Yafo.
Israel is also mentioned in the Mario & Sonic series, which includes it as a nationality that players can choose. The country is erroneously listed as European, reflecting its membership in multiple European sport competitions despite not being located in Europe.
Italy
Italy (Italian: Italia) is a peninsular country in southwest Europe, notable for its boot-like shape and its status as the historical base of the Roman Empire (named after its capital city, Rome). As Italian-Americans, Mario & Luigi have ancestral roots in the nation, and the two frequently reference its culture throughout the Super Mario series.
While Italy as a whole does not explicitly appear in the franchise, it is obliquely represented through specific locales. In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the city of Venice fittingly serves as the setting for "The Venice Menace". Luigi visits Rome, in Mario is Missing!, and it serves as the basis of the Rome Avanti course in Mario Kart Tour and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass. In the former game, Venice is additionally listed on the Globulator, with the PC version further mentioning Florence. Meanwhile, in Mario's Time Machine, Mario not only visits the latter city, but also Padua.

Jamaica (Jamaican Patois: Jumieka) is an island country located in the West Indies. It is notable for being the birthplace of reggae music and the Rastifari religion and for the fact that it is the only country in the world whose national flag does not contain red, white, or blue, a distinction it has held since the redesign of Mauritania's flag in 2017. In Mario's FUNdamentals, one of Mario's knock-knock jokes mentions Jamaica, the punchline playing on its vague phonetic similarity to "you're making." Meanwhile, in the PC version of Mario is Missing!, the capital city of Kingston is viewable on the Globulator.
Kenya
Kenya is a country in eastern Africa, notable for featuring the second-largest economy in the region and for being the birthplace of Samantha Kelly, the current voice actress for both Princess Peach and Toad. In all three versions of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the capital city, Nairobi.
Kitengela-Athi plains
The Kitengela-Athi plains are plains in Africa, south of Nairobi. They are mentioned in the game Mario is Missing!, as being part of the Nairobi National Park.
Kyoto
Kyoto (Japanese: 京都; Rōmaji: Kyōto) is a city in Japan notable for being the location of Nintendo's headquarters and the Nintendo Museum. In 60-Byō Challenge! Luigi o Sukue!!, Kyoto is mentioned in the question "The starting point of the Tōkaidō was Nihonbashi in Edo. Where in Kyoto was the ending point?"
Kyushu
Kyushu (Japanese: 九州; Rōmaji: Kyūshū) is an island in Japan notable for being the southernmost of the four that comprise the country's mainland. In episode 12 of Bakuso King Dojo, Fukusuke claims that he just completed it and the Okinawa region in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.
Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal (Russian: Oзеро Байкал, Ozero Baykal) is a lake in Russia, and the deepest lake in the world. In the Club Mario episode accompanying "The Koopas are Coming! The Koopas are Coming!", when Dr. Know It All is asked by a fan about the biggest lake in the world, Dr. Know It All responds that while Lake Baikal is only three feet wide, it is the deepest lake and contains the most water.
Lake Turkana
Lake Turkana is a lake in Kenya, Africa. The human skull from the game Mario is Missing! is found near Lake Turkana, as mentioned in a pamphlet in the game.
Louisiana
Louisiana (French: Louisiane; Louisiana Creole: Lwizyàn; Spanish: Luisiana) is one of fifty states which comprise the United States of America. It is notable for its unique and highly distinct local culture, especially in the city of New Orleans, which stems from its history as a former French and Spanish colony. In NBA Street V3, Louisiana is the home state of the New Orleans Hornets.
Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden is a multi-purpose indoor arena in New York City. In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! live-action segment "Rowdy Roddy's Rotten Pipes", Rowdy Roddy Piper mentions that he needs to play the Scottish national anthem for a fight at Madison Square Garden tonight.
Manhattan
Manhattan is a borough of New York City, United States.
In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Recycled Koopa", after turning all the citizens of Brooklyn into Koopa Zombies, King Koopa announces that he will soon conquer Manhattan, as well as Queens and the Bronx, with his Crud Cannon.

Manly Beach
Manly Beach is a popular beach in Sydney, Australia. It is mentioned in a pamphlet about Bondi Beach in the game Mario is Missing!. The pamphlet says "both Manly and Bondi beaches are popular as great surfing beaches," but also suggests that "Bondi is perhaps the better of the two."
Massachusetts
Massachusetts is one of fifty states that comprise the United States of America. It is notable for witnessing many landmark events in American history: it was the site of the Plymouth Colony founded by the passengers of the Mayflower, the location of the Salem Witch Trials, and the state where many pivotal events in the leadup to the American Revolution occurred (e.g. the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party). The latter serves as the basis for one of its nicknames, the Cradle of Liberty. In NBA Street V3, it is the home state of the Boston Celtics.
Mecca
Mecca (Arabic: مَكَّة, Makkah) is a city in Saudi Arabia notable for being the holiest city in Islam, owed to its status as the birthplace of Mohammed and the location of many pivotal events in his life. Because of this, all Muslims are required to make a pilgrimage to it known as the hajj at least once in their lives. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Mecca is mentioned on the Globulator, while in the Mario Quiz Cards, its role as the site of the hajj (romanized there as "hadj") is mentioned on the back of a card which asks players to identify what Islam is.
Mexico

The netherworld is a location in many branches of mythology and religion. The netherworld is generally considered to be the place where recently deceased souls depart to in the afterlife. On occasion, the netherworld is associated with Hell, as they both are implied to be located beneath Earth's surface.
In Chapter 3 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the netherworld is mentioned by a fighter in the Glitz Pit: as Craw-Daddy prepares to fight Mario and his partners, he claims that he will drag them "through the gate to the netherworld." Tibet (Chinese: 藏区 (simplified); Pinyin: Zàngqū; Wade-Giles: Hsi-tsang; Tibetan: བོད; Wylie: Böd; Tibetan Pinyin: Poi) is a region of China notable for being the subject of a prolonged territorial dispute between the Chinese government and Tibetan independence movements following a 39-year period where it was a de facto separate country. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Tibet is mentioned by a scientist in Kathmandu who tells Luigi that "You're in the middle of a crossroads to an ancient trade route: Tibet to Kathmandu to India." Meanwhile, in the Mario Quiz Cards, one card tasks the player with identifying the leader of Tibet's Buddhists; the back of the card further mentions the 1959 Tibetan uprising and subsequent expulsion of the Dalai Lama by the Chinese government, though the text conflates this event with the country's reannexation eight years prior.
Tierra del Fuego
Tierra del Fuego (Yahgan: Usi Pusháki), Spanish for "Land of Fire", is an archipelago in Chile and Argentina at the southern extremity of Southern America. It is home to many penguin colonies.[3] In the PC versions of Mario is Missing!, the newspapers of Dublin and Mexico City mention Tierra del Fuego where thousands of penguins swam with their suitcases.
Topeka
Topeka is the capital city of the US state of Kansas. It is briefly mentioned in Leaping Lizards as the city that Mario and Luigi saved from a major pipe clog.
Transylvania
Transylvania (German: Siebenbürgen / Transsilvanien; Hungarian: Erdély; Romanian: Transilvania / Ardeal; Transylvanian Saxon: Siweberjen) is a region in Romania that is internationally known for being the home of literary horror icon Count Dracula. It is mentioned in "The Mario Monster Mash", in which Dr. Frankenstein comes from Transylvania to Brooklyn under the alias Dr. Frank N. Stein and becomes Mario and Luigi's neighbor. Transylvania itself is shown on one of Frankenstein's moving boxes containing the monster.
In "Count Koopula", a location called Turtlevania appears, whose name is a portmanteau of "Transylvania" and "turtle".
Turkey
Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye) is a transcontinental country located on the Anatolia peninsula in West Asia and the Balkans region of southeastern Europe, best known for being the successor state to the former Ottoman Empire. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits the nation's largest city, Istanbul; the capital city, Ankara, is mentioned on the Globulator. Meanwhile, in WarioWare: Twisted!, Turkey is one of several countries viewable on the Globe.
Utah
Utah (Deseretian English: 𐐏𐐭𐐻𐐫) is one of the fifty states that make up the United States of America. It is notable for its origins as a Mormon settlement, which results in their high concentration there compared to other parts of the country. In NBA Street V3, Utah serves as the namesake and home state of the Utah Jazz, one of the game's playable teams.
Vatican City
Vatican City State (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano; Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanæ), commonly known as the Vatican, is a microstate located within Rome, Italy. The area serves as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and is notable for being the smallest country in the world by both area (at 121 acres) and population (764 as of 2023). In Mario is Missing!, the Vatican is mentioned repeatedly when Luigi visits Rome. The Sistine Chapel is one of various locations in Rome that Luigi can visit (though it is not treated as part of the Vatican), and in the NES and SNES versions, the chapel's ceiling is one of several artifacts that Luigi must recover.
Vietnam
Vietnam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam) is a country in Southeast Asia. It is one of two Marxist-Leninist nations in the region, alongside Laos, and is best known internationally for being the centerpoint of the 20-year Vietnam War. The conflict is alluded to in Mario's Bombs Away, which is set in a jungle evocative of those in Vietnam and features military uniforms similar to those worn by participating American soldiers. Meanwhile, in the PC version of Mario is Missing!, both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are mentioned on the Globulator.
Washington
Washington is one of fifty states which make up the United States of America, notable for being a major contributor to the American lumber industry as well as for being one of America's most affluent states. In the PC version of Mario is Missing!, the state's largest city, Seattle, is viewable on the Globulator. Additionally, in NBA Street V3 Washington is the and home state of two playable teams in the game: the Washington Wizards and the Seattle Supersonics, additionally serving as the former's namesake.
Wichita
Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, and is the hometown of Norman and his family. In "Mush-Rumors", Norman's wife, after her family is rescued from the Koopas by Mario and Luigi, tells the two plumbers to look them up if they ever come to Wichita.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin is one of the fifty United States of America. It is notable for being a major hub of the American dairy industry, reflected in its widespread public association (both in and out of the state) with cheese. In NBA Street V3, it is the home state of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Woolsthorpe
Woolsthorpe is a town in England notable for being both the birthplace of Isaac Newton and the place where he first developed his theories on calculus, optics, and gravity, as mentioned in Mario's Time Machine.
Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium is the home ballpark of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. In "Glasnuts", Mario and Luigi try to talk Premier Gorbachev into going there to try an all-American hot dog.
Yasaka Shrine
Yasaka Shrine (Japanese: 八坂神社; Rōmaji: Yasaka-jinja) is a shinto shrine in Kyoto notable for its high level of government support during Japan's imperial era. In 60-Byō Challenge! Luigi o Sukue!!, it is mentioned as one of the incorrect options for the question "The starting point of the Tōkaidō was Nihonbashi in Edo. Where in Kyoto was the ending point?"
Yonkers
Yonkers is a city in the state of New York, which borders the northern end of New York City. Dr. Sigmund Fruitcake hails from Yonkers, as implied by the title of his sole appearance, "Bonkers From Yonkers".
Zanzibar
Zanzibar (Arabic: زنجبار, Zanjibār) is a semi-autonomous archipelago region in the country of Tanzania, notable for its agriculture and widespread biodiversity. When Luigi travels to Nairobi in Mario is Missing!, he does not know where he is; a businesswoman in the city gives him a hint by saying he is "in the largest city between Addis Ababa and Zanzibar."
