Ropes,[1][2] also known as phantom ropes[3] and ghost ropes,[4] are enemies that appear in Gloomy Gulch in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2. They are long vine apparitions that can be used like normal ropes, except ghostly ropes vanish and reappear every few seconds continuously. In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, ropes make their first and only appearance in Ghostly Grove. They also appear in the level counterpart of Donkey Kong Land 2 and at the very start of its Web Woods counterpart. These ghostly ropes have to be used as normal ropes by Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong to safely cross over pits or reach higher areas. A rope flashes every few seconds to indicate that it is about to vanish. Some ropes vanish and reappear at a quicker rate, which is especially evident when ropes are used to make it to a Bonus Barrel.

In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, there are similar obstacles named Boo Barrels, which also have a cycle of vanishing temporarily.
