San Mario, also called Mario-tachi, are three clones of Mario created by obtaining 3UP at the Donkey Kong slot machine. They accompany Mario throughout the chapters set in Parsley Woods in Super Mario-kun Volume 12 (chapters 5 troughs 7). Personality wise, they are identical to Mario: their only distinction is later added by Yoshi in the form of a number on their hat emblem.
In chapter 5, while fighting against Mecha Donkey Kong, Mario collects an umbrella, a bag, and a hat from Wario's lost items that Yoshi took before. With those, Mario access the slot machine and obtains a jackpot of 3 extra lives, creating the San Mario. Mario then orders his clones to defeat the Mecha Donkey Kong, which they do by hammering it (even though, one of the clones ends up accidentally hitting Mario). The robot is revealed to be controlled by Wario (forced to do it by the Ghost). As the four Mario starts arguing on who is going to keep the first numbered crystal ball they need to access to Syrup Castle that the robot dropped, Wario flies by in his Jet form and flees after stealing the ball.
In chapter 6, still fighting the San Mario for losing the crystal ball, Mario is knocked out by the three and, to distinguish them, Yoshi draws on a number on the clones' hat emblem. Later, on a train, due to the Pouncer crashing it, the San Mario ends up fusing together in a giant Mario and, as evidenced by their numbers on each body section ("1" on the hat, "2" on the torso, and "3" on the crotch) they all control a part of the body each, but they result to be too uncoordinated, and the entire giant Mario comes crumbling down.
In chapter 7, the Marios are fighting the ghost and, after being rescued by Luigi after the boss turned them into coins, he gives them a bunch of power-ups: Mario turns into Cape Mario, Mario 1 in Raccoon Mario, Mario 2 in Frog Mario, and Mario 3 in Bunny Mario. With their powers combined, the Marios manages to force the ghost in possessing a pile of coins that quickly devours all four of them. However, inside the ghost's stomach, Mario and the San Mario fuse together, becoming Super Power-Up Mario, breaking out of the boss, killing him in the process. After the Super Power-Up form expires, Mario remains fused with his clones, to which him and Yoshi bid farewell to them.
