First appearance Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)
Variant of Koopa Troopa

Snortoises[1] are finned turtle enemies in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. When on land, they crawl forward, though if encountered underwater, they will swim horizontally instead, changing direction if they hit a wall. Like Koopa Troopas, they hide in their shells when jumped on, which can be carried and thrown or kicked.

Their English name is a portmanteau of "snorkel" or "snort" (in reference to their pig-like snout) and "tortoise", while their Japanese name alludes to softshell turtles. Snortoise's overall design is invocative of the pig-nosed turtle, a species named スッポンモドキ (suppon modoki, "false softshell turtle") in Japanese. Their internal file designation suggests they were originally going to more closely resemble sea turtles.
