Springin' Spiders
This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed by the end of May 2011.
Template:DKClevelbox Springin' Spiders is the ninth level of the third addition to the Donkey Kong Country series, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! It is also the fourth area of the Kremwood Forest. In the Game Boy Advance remake of the game, it is instead the sixth level, as well as the first area in the Kremwood Forest (having switched positions with Barrel Shield Bust-Up.
During this tree level, the Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong find themselves climbing to the top of two tall trees. However, this can be tough, as many platforms are too high up to reach; they need to use the assistance of the uncommon creatures, Nids, who are placed all throughout the level. The spider-like helpers can use their jumping skills to lift the primates up place-to-place. They have to be careful while they climb the tree, as the area is infested with countless numbers of Buzzes, who can easily attack the heroes if they are not careful. Bristles also make their debut here, along with a single Swoopy. Other enemies include Sneeks and Knik-Knaks. The Kongs can find a hidden Animal Barrel to turn into Squawks in the beginning of this level to help them reach a secret pathway and defeat many enemies with his nut-spitting abilities.
Level Layout
The level begins with the Kongs inside of the first tree, which a hole can be found in that they can walk through to reach the tree's branch. This branch, along with the one from the neighboring tree, can be used as a bridge to reach the next tree. A Nid is located on the branches that can aid the primates in reaching some bananas and a DK Barrel. When the Kongs enter the second tree, they are greeted by a Nid that can lift them onto a protruding piece of wood in the same tree. They must climb a few more of these wooden platforms, while dodging a Bristles and a red Buzz, in order to access a passage leading back outside between the two trees, where another Nid can be found. This creature can send them upwards onto a set of branches that lead to another passage that they can take to gain entrance back into to the second tree. Here, there are some wooden platforms protruding from the ground that the heroes can use to climb. On the third platform, they can find a barrel and a Nid that can bounce them higher onto two wooden platforms with a green Buzz between them. If they climb a little higher from here, they make their way through a hole in a wooden structure that blocks most of their path. A Nid bounces from left to right in this area that can be used to reach a higher structure with the letter K above it.
From here, they can find a passage that leads them outside of the tree onto some branches to the right. A small gap is located between the branches that the Kongs can drop down to in order to discover a Nid, who can bring them back onto the branches, and an Animal Barrel containing Squawks. If they enter the barrel, they are turned into Squawks. Once they climb to the previously mentioned branches, they can either, as Squawks, fly upwards into a hidden area through the second tree, which is full of bananas and leads up to the first Bonus Barrel in the level, or continue to the left into the first tree. In this tree, there is a Nid that can bounce them up to some protruding platforms in the interior of the tree. After passing a green Buzz, they reach platform slightly larger than the previous protruding structures with a barrel and a Nid on it, who can bounce them onto some more wooden platforms with a green Buzz among them. To the right of the Buzz, they can discover a Nid that is able to bounce them onto a higher platform with an opening ahead of it that leads outside of the tree onto some branches that are separated by a gap with a green Buzz within it. In the area below the enemy, the first Bonus Barrel in the level is located. The letter O is also placed into the air above one of the branches, which are followed by a passage that takes the apes into the second tree, where they can find a Nid that they are able to use in order to bounce onto a wooden platform found above a green Buzz.
Another Nid stands on a protruding platform above this. The creature can help them reach some higher platforms that they must use in order to reach a No Animal Sign and a passage leading outside between the two trees. If the Kongs have turned into Squawks, they transform back into their normal selves and earn a Bear Coin when they pass the No Animal Sign. On the branches ahead of the sign outside of the trees, the primates can find a wall of green Buzzes in their way, who can be bounced over with the help of a nearby Nid. An opening leading into the first tree is on the other side of the wasp-like foes, and it contains a Nid and a green Buzz that hovers near it. The apes are able to use the Nid to reach a higher, wooden platform with another Nid on it, who they must use to bounce them past a Buzz and onto some higher platforms. A Nid stands on one of the platforms that can raise the Kongs under a red Buzz and to a small platform protruding from the interior of the tree. If they climb slightly higher from here, they reach a solid, wooden platform with an additional Nid on it, who can send them above two red Buzzes and up to a platform with the level's Star Barrel on it.
About halfway into the level, the heroes will find a pathway leading over to the neighboring tree. In this tree, they will use several small platforms and a few Nids to reach the top of the area, where they will find the passage out of the tree. The passage will lead into the tree to the left, and inside of this tree, the apes will use a few small platforms to reach a passage to the left side of the first tree. Climbing the small branches there will take them to a platform above a red Buzz. They should drop down, landing next to the Buzz, and then exit the tree to find a Knik-Knak between a large gap. If they bounce on the insect, they will be able to reach the entrance back into the second tree. In this tree, they will, as before, need to use a few Nids and platforms to climb the area, avoiding several restless Buzzes. At the top of the area, Kiddy and Dixie will find a passage leading to a few branches between the two trees. Hopping to higher places with the branches, they will soon make their way into the first tree, where they will use more Nids to bounce to high platforms. If they safely make it to the top of this area, they will find a pathway to the second tree again. With the help of a few more Nids and platforms, the Kongs should make their way to the top of the area and outside of the two trees, where they will climb up a few branches to find the level's highest point. Back inside of the second tree, they will find a flagpole. Raising its flag will end the level.
Secrets
K-O-N-G Letters
- K: After the heroes climb to the area above the final Nid before Squawks's Animal Barrel, they can find the letter K to the right of them in the corner.
- O: The letter O is located above a branch that hangs over the first Bonus Barrel in the level.
- N: Shortly after the level's Koin, the heroes can find a Nid that lifts them onto a protruding piece of wood instead one of the trees. If they stay on the helper, it bounces them even higher to an area with a passage that leads out of the tree and towards the letter N.
- G: The Kongs can find a single Swoopy near the end of the level that they can jump on, with the use of their Team-up move, to reach a hidden area with the letter G.
Bonus Levels
- Not too long after the letter K, the Kongs find an Animal Barrel between two branches with Squawks in it. If they turn into the Animal Buddy with the barrel, they are able to fly to the top of the tree on the left. At the highest reachable point in that tree, they can find a pathway to the neighboring tree. A green Buzz is in the center of this pathway under the letter O. Squawks must defeat the enemy and head into the gap it was blocking to find a Bonus Barrel. The barrel can take him into a Bonus Level, where he needs to fly to the top of the area and collect fifteen green bananas around a red Buzz within the time limit of 45 seconds. Once enough bananas are collected within the time limit, a Bonus Coin appears at the bottom of the area to grab with the remaining time.
- Shortly after the letter G, the apes should find a small gap on the side of the second tree's interior. If they fall into the gap, they land right into a Bonus Barrel. After landing into it, it takes them into a Bonus Level, where they have to collect 30 stars in 15 seconds by traveling through a large tree and picking them up. Once all of the stars are collected in the time limit, a Bonus Coin appears outside of the tree to grab with the remaining time.
DK Coin
- After the Star Barrel, the heroes encounter a Koin in a small area between the level's two trees. The Koin is in possession of the level's DK Coin, but will not give it up without a fight. To make things worse, the Steel Keg that is require to beat it is not around. The apes need to blast away the wall to the right with a nearby TNT Barrel to find the Steel Keg on a small platform. They then have to fall downwards into a lower area with the keg and climb back up to the area with the Koin. With the barrel still in their hand, the apes should stand on the Koin's shield, causing him to put his attention on them. With the Kremling distracted, they can throw their barrel at the nearest wall to make it bounce back at them, hit the Koin in the side, and defeat it. Once the foe is defeated, the Kongs can claim the leftover DK Coin.
Warp Barrel
- Kiddy should throw Dixie straight upwards after they enter the second tree for the first time to reach a hidden Warp Barrel that sends them to the level's End of Level Flag.
