Template:DKClevelbox Blackout Basement is the twenty-eighth level of the popular Donkey Kong game, Donkey Kong Country. It is also the sixth and final level of the Kremkroc Industries, Inc. area. In the Game Boy Advance version of the game, Blackout Basement is the twenty-seventh level in the game, as well as the fifth level of Kremkroc Industries, Inc (having switched positions with Mine Cart Madness).

In this unique factory level, the Kongs face a never before seen obstacle: lights that flicker on and off throughout the whole level. This causes the level to become increasingly difficult, as the Kongs have a harder time seeing where to go when the lights shut off. To make things worse, the level is filled with many ropes, moving platforms, and even pitfalls, which the heroes can fall into if they aren't careful where they step. Many enemies are also scattered everywhere to bump into the Kongs when they can and cannot see. Enemies in this factory level include Kritters, Klumps, Klaptraps, and Manky Kongs. With the short moments of bright light, the heroes have to make their way cautiously through the level.

Level Layout

At the beginning of the level, the monkeys will need to walk down a set of stairs and and walk up a smaller stairway to by greeted by a Kritter. Once the foe is defeated, the heroes should head over a small gap and beat another Kritter. Over the next gap, they will grab the letter K, then have to travel down another stairway to find an abyss. It must be crossed with the platform in the center of it. When they do cross it, they will have to get over a larger abyss, using several more platforms. Through the darkness, the monkeys will then have to cross the following abyss nearby with a tire on a platform. After they bounce their way over the pit, they will need to defeat a few more enemies and find another gap with three platforms inside it. With the tires on the platforms, the heroes should make their way over the pit and break into an area on the floor to grab the letter O. Farther on, the monkeys will have to bounce off of a tire to reach the Star Barrel.

Halfway through the level now, the group will need to defeat a Klump and swing along a long rope to cross a pit. On the other end of the pit, the monkeys will encounter another Klump to defeat as they walk up a small set of stairs. After riding over a moving platform to cross an abyss, the Kongs will need to jump into another abyss to land on a platform. It will lead them up a high ledge, where they will have to head east, as before, and walk down more stairs, beating two more Klumps. On the edge of the area, the monkeys will see a swinging rope. When it moves toward them, they should grab on and travel to the next area, where they will have to cross another abyss with two moving platforms. This abyss will be followed by another one, and it must be crossed with some platforms hovering over the area. Again, the monkeys will find yet another abyss after this. The only way to cross it will be by using a falling platform in the center of it. Once this is passed, the monkeys will have to continue along the factory path and find the next pit with four falling platforms in it. With the still-flickering lights, the heroes will need to jump to each platform and cross the pit. When this is over, the apes will fall down a small ledge and find a few barrels rolling into them. These barrels, from the nearby Manky Kong, will have to be avoided at all costs. Once the Manky Kong is found and defeated, they will need to head up a long set of stairs and defeat a group of Kritters. They can all be knocked out with just a simple cartwheel. After that, Donkey and Diddy will need to dodge one moee Klaptrap and walk up a small ledge to find the level's exit.

Hidden Items and Collectibles

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K: After passing a Kritter near the beginning of the level, the Kongs approach the letter K, located above a small pit.
  • O: Just before reaching the Star Barrel, the primates cross an abyss using several bouncy tires. After bouncing off of the last tire, they should land on a rectangular mark on the ground to break it and release the hidden letter O.
  • N: The Kongs can find the letter N between all of the barrels in the first Bonus Level.
  • G: Immediately before the entrance to the second Bonus Level, the Kongs encounter a large group of Kritters with the letter G above them on a raised platform.

Bonus Levels

  • Near the end of the level, the Kongs have to jump along four falling platforms. Under the last platform, they can notice a lone banana. They should fall down to this banana to land in a hidden barrel below it. They are sent by the barrel to a Bonus Level, where they need to shoot through several barrels around an open area, trying to grab as many bananas possible. This must be done while the lights blink on and off. Once they are done collecting, the primates can exit to the right.
  • After exiting the first Bonus Level, the heroes are shot into the main level and break an area of the ground. A barrel then pops out of it. They should pick up and carry the barrel through the level. After passing a barrel-throwing Manky Kong, the Kongs meet a group of Kritters. The two Kongs have to set their barrel down and defeat the foes, and then come back to pick up the barrel. After that, they drop down a ledge. There, they should turn around and blow away the wall to the left to reveal an opening. It leads them to a Bonus Level, where they have to watch as an Extra Life Balloon moves around four barrels. Once it stops, the balloon disappears. If the primates choose the correct barrel that it stopped on, they are given a prize. Afterwards, they exit the bonus automatically. They are also forced out of the level without a prize if they fail to choose the correct barrel.
