Template:Level Millstone Mayhem is the tenth level in the popular Super Nintendo Entertainment System game, Donkey Kong Country. It is also the fifth and final level in the Monkey Mines area.

Taking place in the first temple level of the game, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong face a new obstacle here. Throughout the whole level, invincible Gnawties piloting Millstones chase them. These foes begin to chase the Kongs the moment they are passed and do not stop until a tall wall blocks their path. Another strong enemy first faced here is the mighty Krusha, who cannot be defeated with a normal jump from Diddy alone. Other enemies here include the normal foe, Kritter, along with Slippas and some Neckies. To make the level a bit easier, the helpful Animal Buddy, Winky the Frog resides here to give the Kongs a ride through the last half of the level. However, he is hidden in a high area in the level.

The level begins.

From the start of the level, the Kongs must bounce off a tire to reach a high ledge. From there, they must continue along and defeat three strong Krushas. The Kongs then must pass two millstones operated by Gnawties and avoid them. After this part, the Kongs can nab the letter O, and defeat a Kritter to encounter the next Gnawty on a millstone. In order for the Kongs to avoid this foe, they must run into a small alcove and dash out the other side before the millstone hits them. On the other side of this large hazard, the Kongs must continue and pass another millstone that will chase them. Then, the Kongs must avoid a few Krushas and encounter another millstone, controlled by a Gnawty. The Kongs must get under this foe by walking into a small alcove, then run out as the enemy moves to the left. After this area is completed, the Kongs can collect a few bananas and enter a small pit filled with four Kritters. Afterwards, the Kongs must touch the Star Barrel.

Halfway through the level, the Kongs must cross a small gap and head under another Millstone ran by a Gnawty. The Kongs must jump of a nearby ledge that leads them to some Slippas, as well as a large abyss with a Gnawty and its millstone, and some platforms. The Kongs must ride on the platform over the abyss, and avoid a millstone. On the other end of this pit, the Kongs must continue and defeat some Slippas and find the letter N. At this point, the Kongs must hop over another small gap and drop down from a ledge without hitting into a millstone. They can defeat a Necky along the way, and then encounter another millstone, operated by a Gnawty. The Kongs must sneak into two alcoves below and dash out the other end of it as the millstone moves to the left. Afterwards, the Kongs must get up a small ledge and can defeat a Necky to grab the letter G. Next, the Kongs must go into another alcove with a millstone. While in this alcove, the Kongs must beware of some Slippas in the way. Afterwards, the Kongs will find the next millstone over a gap. The Kongs must then continue along as it moves upwards. When this foe is passed, the Kongs will find a sign, marking that the level is almost over. The Kongs must then bounce off a tire to hop over another millstone and cross a small abyss to find a brown exit sign. If Donkey or Diddy Kong travel into the nearby opening, they will be able to go to the boss level.

Hidden Items and Collectibles

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K: The letter K is in the first Bonus Level, where the primates must shoot into the first row to the right to reach it.
  • O: The heroes come up to the letter O near a ledge after passing under the second millstone.
  • N: The letter N can be discovered immediately before an abyss found near the third DK Barrel in the level.
  • G: The letter G hovers above the only egg-throwing Necky in the level.

Bonus Levels

  • At the beginning of the level, the Kongs can discover a tire. They must bounce left in mid-air to land on top of the entrance, where a barrel can be found. It takes the Kongs to a Bonus Level, where they must ride back and fourth in a barrel. As it moves, they can collect three rows of bananas. The Kongs must grab bananas as they blast upwards, gaining a prize at the top of the rows. If the Kongs miss the barrel upon trying to land, they end up back in the main level.
  • After the Kongs pass the first Gnawty on a millstone, they can see a barrel hidden in a nearby pit. They must jump in it and shoot upwards. If they land on a cracked area on the ground, a tire appears. The Kongs must push it past the letter O and then stop when they see a Gnawty. From there, they must bounce off of the tire and land in a barrel above a Gnawty and its millstone. It shoots them into a Bonus Level, where they must hit some rotating letters in the correct order to spell out the word, "Rare." Once this is done, they are awarded with an Animal Token and then exit the bonus. If they fail to spell out the word correctly, they are forced back into the main level without a prize.
  • In the middle of the level, the Kongs can find a Gnawty over a small alcove. They must carry a TNT Barrel into the alcove and destroy the fragile wall with the TNT Barrel to find the entrance to a Bonus Level. In this Bonus Level, the Kongs must watch as a green Extra Life Balloon moves around quickly in four barrels. Once it stops, they must choose the barrel it is located in. If they chose correctly, they are awarded with the balloon and then leave the bonus. They are given no prize if they fail to choose the correct barrel.

Photograph (Game Boy Advance version only)

  • Just before the second DK Barrel in the level, the Kongs can find a group of Kritters in a large alcove. One of the enemies is in possession of the level's Photograph, and if it is defeated, the primates can claim it off of the foe. The item grants them with a picture of a Kritter.

Warp Barrel

  • At the beginning of the level, past the first millstone, there is a small pit with a Barrel Cannon. The Kongs must jump into the barrel and then go left, leading them into a Warp Barrel.
