Water Balls[1] appear in the Super Mario franchise as large masses of water that float and sometimes travel in the air. Water Balls are shaped as either circles or ellipses (horizontal and vertical) and look similar to bubbles.
History
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Water Balls in New Super Mario Bros. Wii appear in World 7-2 only, and they can be swum in by the player character until they exit it, at which point the player falls out. Water Balls are usually used to access high areas or to cross large gaps, but they can also be used to avoid enemies down below. Water Balls hinder the movement speed of Bullet Bills.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Water Balls in New Super Mario Bros. U and its port appear only in A Quick Dip in the Sky. They behave the same as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Koopa Shells are also shown to travel slower while moving through a Water Ball. Water Balls do not appear in New Super Luigi U.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Water Balls in Super Mario Bros. Wonder appear during Wonder Bowser Jr.'s boss battle in Sunbaked Desert Palace, and during the Wonder Effect of Hot-Hot Hot! Water Balls behave the same as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In Sunbaked Desert Palace, Water Balls are produced by Wonder Bowser Jr. after taking damage. In Hot-Hot Hot!, an infinite number of Water Balls floats down and extinguishes Hot-Hot Rocks during the Wonder Effect.
