Super Mario-kun Volume 16 is the sixteenth volume of the manga series. It continues the Super Mario 64 arc that started last volume. In one chapter, Mario takes a quick deviation from the story to part take in a kart race with Wario in a story based of Mario Kart 64, an anticipation of the next volume's secondary arc.

Stage 1

Autumn has arrived, yet Mario is still suffering the hot temperature while visiting with Red Bob-omb the deserted Shifting Sand Land. Tricked by a mirage, Mario bonks his head against a rock after mistaking it for a Power Star. Right after that, something swoops in and takes Mario Cap. The culprit is revealed to be a Klepto. While following it, Mario and Red Bob-omb encounter some Goombas. Mario faces head on, but they get the upper hand: without his cap, Mario is weaker and even his Power Meter drains a lot quicker for every injury taken. Red Bob-omb tries to fix it by giving him different caps, including Luigi's, but nothing works. While running away from the Goombas with one slice of Power Meter left, Mario lays his hands onto a Block which starts to tremble: it is a Crazed Crate. Still holding onto the Crate, Mario is bounced around with it, defeating the Goombas and leaving him dizzy.
The duo spots Klepto, wearing Mario Cap, on top of a pillar taunting them. Klepto then warns them they should start running, as a Tox Box is rolling towards them. Red Bob-omb points to a nearby red block and Mario hits it, only to get a "bald cap": even the blocks are affected by the hot temperature. Mario gets squashed by the Tox Box. As the dialogue box states "Bald Mario died", Mario gets up and yells at the box for the insult. Klepto flies away and the chase ensues.
Mario and Red Bob-omb reach an oasis, where they can finally rest. Red Bob-omb finds a glass of juice (a trap from Klepto) and drinks it, only to spew flames due to the liquid being Tabasco sauce. Mario finds some yellow coconuts, only to realize that it was a thorny Pokey body part after biting it. Right then, Mario slides down a dune and ends up in quicksand. Noticing a yellow block over it, Red Bob-omb tells Mario to hit it. Mario does so and gets a Koopa Shell. Mario is confused on what to do with it, but Red Bob-omb tells him to ride it. Mario does so and starts surfing all around the desert. Using the nearby pyramid, Mario slides up and jump against Klepto, defeating him.
Mario takes back his cap, and Red Bob-omb notices a strange glint in Klepto's bald head: it is a Power Star. Klepto gives them the Star but asks something in exchange. Mario accepts and asks him to name the price, so Klepto swoops his cap again, claiming it as compensation: the chase resumes.
