Sherbet Land (spelled Sherbert Land on a few occasions[1][2]) is the second race course of the Star Cup in Mario Kart 64. Like with SNES Vanilla Lake 2, the course involves racers traveling on ice counterclockwise around a lake with jagged edges. However, this course also includes a cave section, and there are tall walls along the entire right side of the track. Penguins also appear here as obstacles and will make racers spin out. If racers ever fall into the lake, they will be frozen solid in a block of ice until Lakitu drops them back onto the track. The course shares its music with Frappe Snowland; both are uniquely given blue-tinted minimaps to distinguish from the white scenery.

Sherbet Land reappears as a classic course in Mario Kart Wii as the first race of the Banana Cup.

Mario Kart 64

Course layout

The track begins with an immediate right turn followed by a sharp left turn, with one Penguin along each. Each Penguin on the ice will waddle around and slide from one side of the track to the other. Racers then reach the first set of Item Boxes, and briefly zigzag before encountering another sharp left turn. The track then widens and racers have the choice to go to the left or right of a huge rock; the right path is much narrower but contains a lone Item Box. There is then a brief straightaway, followed by a pair of Penguins at the entrance of the cave. As racers enter the cave, the track greatly narrows, then they take a slight right turn followed by one huge left turn. Along the left turn is another item set as well as four icy pillars in the middle of the track; each icy pillar has two larger Penguins waddling around it in a circle. After this is one more right turn before racers exit the cave and the track widens again. There is then a slight right turn with the last item set on the left side of the track. After a brief straight, a left turn with two Penguins, and one more straightaway, racers reach the finish line.

At the center of the lake is an icy island with a huge Penguin on it, though it is only possible for players to reach it in multiplayer mode. One player must be a heavyweight character and the other lightweight. The lightweight character should position themselves towards the island, and the heavyweight should back up into the wall, then use a Star and ram into the other player to send them flying to the island.

Mario Kart Wii

Sherbet Land makes its classic course debut in Mario Kart Wii as the first course of the Banana Cup, with numerous visual upgrades. The core layout of the course is the same, but a few minor additions have been made. The Penguins on the ice are a bit smaller than before. Item Boxes now appear on both sides of the huge rock, and there is a dash panel ramp to the right of it. Inside the cave, a dash panel now appears on the right side of the first icy pillar. Lastly, two Penguins have been added between the cave exit and the last item set.

In this game, the island in the middle of the lake can be reached by hopping off the ice and using a Bullet Bill. However, once the player reaches the platform, Lakitu immediately takes them back to the track. Additionally, if a racer uses a POW Block or Lightning, the Penguin on the island will be affected.

Tournaments

February 2010's first tournament required players to complete a GP race on a version of Sherbet Land with more obstacles: There are more Penguins throughout the track, and some breakable crates have been added to the cave section. Most Item Boxes on the track now travel alongside the Penguins.

Mario & Sonic series

Sherbet Land appears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games as the location of the Dream Curling event. The objective has been changed from regular curling; players now must score points by knocking down bowling pins as well as a Goomba that walks across the playing area. The playing area is not on the actual race track, but a moving Item Box appears on it and Penguins appear along the sides as spectators.

The music for Sherbet Land also appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, where it is listed as being from Mario Kart Wii, despite it originating from Mario Kart 64.
