Proposals can be new features, the removal of previously-added features that have tired out, or new policies that must be approved via consensus before any action is taken.
  • Voting periods last for two weeks, but can close early or be extended (see below).
  • Any autoconfirmed user can support or oppose, but must have a strong reason for doing so.
  • All proposals must be approved by a majority of voters, including proposals with more than two options.
  • For past proposals, see the proposal archive and the talk page proposal archive.

If you would like to get feedback on an idea before formally proposing it here, you may do so on the proposals talk. For talk page proposals, you can discuss the changes on the talk page itself before creating the TPP there.

How to

If someone has an idea about improving the wiki or managing its community, but feel that they need community approval before acting upon that idea, they may make a proposal about it. They must have a strong argument supporting their idea and be willing to discuss it in detail with other users, who will then vote on whether or not they think the idea should be implemented. Proposals should include links to all relevant pages and writing guidelines. Proposals must include a link to the draft page. Any pages that would be largely affected by the proposal should be marked with {{proposal notice}}.

Rules

  1. Only autoconfirmed users may create or vote on proposals. Anyone is free to comment on proposals (provided that the page's protection level allows them to edit).
  2. Proposals conclude at the end of the day (23:59) two weeks after voting starts (all times GMT).
    • For example, if a proposal is added at any time on Monday, August 1, 2011, the voting starts immediately and the deadline is two weeks later on Monday, August 15, at 23:59 GMT.
  3. Users may vote for more than one option, but they may not vote for every option available.
  4. Every vote should have a strong, sensible reason accompanying it. Agreeing with a previously mentioned reason given by another user is acceptable (including "per" votes), but tangential comments, heavy sarcasm, and other misleading or irrelevant quips are just as invalid as providing no reason at all.
  5. Users who feel that certain votes were cast in bad faith or which truly have no merit can address the votes in the comments section. Users can ask a voter to clarify their position, point out mistakes or flaws in their arguments, or call for the outright removal of the vote if it lacks sufficient reasoning. Users may not remove or alter the content of anyone else's votes. Voters can remove or rewrite their own vote(s) at any time, but the final decision to remove another user's vote lies solely with the wiki staff.
    • Users can also use the comments section to bring up any concerns or mistakes in regards to the proposal itself. In such cases, it's important the proposer addresses any concerns raised as soon as possible. Even if the supporting side might be winning by a wide margin, that should be no reason for such questions to be left unanswered. They may point out any missing details that might have been overlooked by the proposer, so it's a good idea as the proposer to check them frequently to achieve the most accurate outcome possible.
  6. If a user makes a vote and is subsequently blocked for any amount of time, their vote is removed. However, if the block ends before the proposal ends, then the user in question holds the right to re-cast their vote. If a proposer is blocked, their vote is removed and "(blocked)" is added next to their name in the "Proposer:" line of the proposal, which runs until its deadline as normal. If the proposal passes, it falls to the supporters of the idea to enact any changes in a timely manner.
  7. Proposals cannot contradict an already ongoing proposal or overturn the decision of a previous proposal that concluded less than four weeks (28 days) ago.
  8. If one week before a proposal's initial deadline, the first place option is ahead of the second place option by eight or more votes and the first place option has at least 80% approval, then the proposal concludes early. Wiki staff may tag a proposal with "Do not close early" at any time to prevent an early close, if needed.
    • Tag the proposal with {{early notice}} if it is on track for an early close. Use {{proposal check|early=yes}} to perform the check.
  9. Any proposal where none of the options have at least four votes will be extended for another week. If after three extensions, no options have at least four votes, the proposal will be listed as "NO QUORUM." The original proposer then has the option to relist said proposal to generate more discussion.
  10. If a proposal reaches its deadline and there is a tie for first place, then the proposal is extended for another week.
  11. If a proposal reaches its deadline and the first place option is ahead of the second place option by three or more votes, then the first place option must have over 50% approval to win. If the margin is only one or two votes, then the first place option must have at least 60% approval to win. If the required approval threshold is not met, then the proposal is extended for another week.
    • Use {{proposal check}} to automate this calculation; see the template page for usage instructions and examples.
  12. Proposals can be extended a maximum of three times. If a consensus has not been reached by the fourth deadline, then the proposal fails and cannot be re-proposed until at least four weeks after the last deadline.
  13. All proposals are archived. The original proposer must take action accordingly if the outcome of the proposal dictates it. If it requires the help of an administrator, the proposer can ask for that help.
  14. After a proposal passes, it is added to the appropriate list of "unimplemented proposals" below and is removed once it has been sufficiently implemented.
  15. If the wiki staff deem a proposal unnecessary or potentially detrimental to the upkeep of the Super Mario Wiki, they have the right to cancel it at any time.
  16. Proposals can only be rewritten or canceled by their proposer within the first four days of their creation. However, proposers can request that their proposal be canceled by a staff member at any time, provided they have a valid reason for it. Please note that canceled proposals must also be archived.
  17. Unless there is major disagreement about whether certain content should be included, there should not be proposals about creating, expanding, rewriting, or otherwise fixing up pages. To organize efforts about improving articles on neglected or completely missing subjects, try setting up a collaboration thread on the forums.
  18. Proposals cannot be made about promotions and demotions. Staff changes are discussed internally and handled by the bureaucrats.
  19. No joke proposals. Proposals are serious wiki matters and should be handled professionally. Joke proposals will be deleted on sight.
  20. Proposals must have a status quo option (e.g. Oppose, Do nothing) unless the status quo itself violates policy.

Basic proposal formatting

Copy and paste the formatting below to get started; your username and the proposal deadline will automatically be substituted when you save the page. Update the bracketed variables with actual information, and be sure to replace the whole variable including the square brackets, so "[insert info here]" becomes "This is the inserted information" and not "[This is the inserted information]". Proposals presenting multiple alternative courses of action can have more than two voting options, but the objective(s) of each voting option must be clearly defined. Such options should also be kept to a minimum, and if something comes up in the comments, the proposal can be amended as necessary.

Autoconfirmed users will now be able to vote on your proposal. Remember that you can vote on your own proposal just like the others.

To vote for an option, just insert #{{User|[your username here]}} at the bottom of the section of your choice. Just don't forget to add a valid reason for your vote behind that tag if you are voting on another user's proposal. If you are voting on your own proposal, you can simply say "Per proposal".

Talk page proposals

Proposals concerning a single page or a limited group of pages are held on the most relevant talk page regarding the matter. All of the above proposal rules also apply to talk page proposals. Place {{TPP}} under the section's heading, and once the proposal is over, replace the template with {{settled TPP}}. Proposals dealing with a large amount of splits, merges, or deletions across the wiki should still be held on this page.

All active talk page proposals must be listed below in chronological order (new proposals go at the bottom) using {{TPP discuss}}. Include a brief description of the proposal while also mentioning any pages affected by it, a link to the talk page housing the discussion, and the deadline. If the proposal involves a page that is not yet made, use {{fake link}} to communicate its title in the description. Linking to pages not directly involved in the talk page proposal is not recommended, as it clutters the list with unnecessary links.

Create pages with renditions of recognizable music themes

I think I've seen a few people around here entertain the idea of making distinct pages for themes that are very notable, such as the Ground and Underground themes from Super Mario Bros. or the DK Jungle Swing theme from Donkey Kong Country. However, I do not have deep knowledge in music theory to analyse them, but I want to start something of this kind, so I have an alternative: making list pages that comprise all music based on a particular famous theme from the Mario franchise. They'd look similar to those media file pages we already have and the tracks would be listed by the games they appear in.

This way, it would be easier to browse different renditions of a theme for anyone interested, on pages that can be updated at the blink of an eye. Not to mention that such themes are definitely worth covering on their own in some way.

However, there is one rule: the theme must be renditioned in at least 8 games, not counting remakes or reissues. Any renditions made for a remake, such as the Overworld theme from the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros., will be added as an aside. The pages should also describe the changes in each rendition.

To start off, we could take the following themes in consideration (as per Doc von Schmeltwick (talk)'s comment below):

  • All themes from Super Mario Bros. I mean, you know they all appeared in some form in at least 10+ games as of now.
  • Overworld theme from Super Mario Bros. 2. It appeared in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series with multiple variations.
  • DK Island Swing from Donkey Kong Country. It can be heard in DKC2, DK64, Smash, Mario Kart 7 and 8, Mario Super Sluggers etc.
  • The Slider theme from Super Mario 64. It can be heard in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
  • Super Mario Bros. overworld theme
  • Super Mario Bros. cave theme
  • Super Mario Bros. invincibility theme
  • Donkey Kong Country Jungle Hijinks (DK Island Swing)
  • Super Mario 64 Peach's Castle theme

If you can think of any more, or if you want to discuss the ones I listed, please leave a comment.

Comments

The regulation I came up with was "Must appear in at least 8 games, not counting remakes/reissues." The themes I had come up with were as follows:

  • Super Mario Bros. overworld theme
  • Super Mario Bros. cave theme
  • Super Mario Bros. invincibility theme
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 fortress theme
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 boss theme
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 airship theme
  • Donkey Kong Country Jungle Hijinks (DK Island Swing)
  • Super Mario 64 Peach's Castle theme
  • Super Mario 64 Secret Slide theme

As for your first point, the SMB1 castle theme very rarely has recurred. If this regulation is added, I will gladly support. The pages, however, must entail changes in composition throughout the games, for instance, noting how the instrumentation changes and how later arrangements may add secondary melodies. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:18, 9 November 2018 (EST)

I will add this rule to the proposal because it seems reasonable, but I'm curious if there is a basis for the choice of 8 or more themes. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 18:32, 9 November 2018 (EST)
It's not too little, but it's still easily-countable. I was considering what counted as "notable enough for x" as being a similar case to my enemy table addition to the Super Mario series page. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:36, 9 November 2018 (EST)
Oh god, if we are to actually analyze the music, I can already see the blue "rewrite-expand" hell that's gonna plague these articles 0_o but I'll try to contribute on that. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 18:46, 9 November 2018 (EST)
I can do it, as long as I am directed to the renditions from the MP, sports, and other miscellaneous subseries I don't buy into. I've composed before. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:48, 9 November 2018 (EST)
That's good, very good :) -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 19:13, 9 November 2018 (EST)
Oh right, an additional reason for the amount: music can be a bit of a sue-trigger for copyright holders, so I didn't want too many pages focused on individual themes. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:52, 9 November 2018 (EST)

I've compiled a list of at least eight games for each proposed theme (just off the tip of my tongue, since, you know, I have a doctorate in Mariology), and some of them don't reach the quota. Please add more games to the themes that are listed as not ok, if they exist. For now I remove those with an insufficient number of games from the proposal. Mind you, some renditions are used across several games and are counted as one.

  • Super Mario Bros. overworld theme (OK)Super Mario Bros.; Super Mario Bros. 2; Super Mario World; Super Mario Sunshine; New Super Mario Bros. games; Super Mario 3D Land; Super Mario Odyssey; Super Smash Bros. series etc.
  • Super Mario Bros. cave theme (OK)Super Mario Bros.; Super Mario Bros. 3; Super Mario 64 (as Hazy Maze Cave); Super Mario Galaxy; Super Mario 3D Land; Super Mario 3D World; Super Mario Odyssey; Super Smash Bros. series etc.
  • Super Mario Bros. invincibility theme (OK)Super Mario Bros.; Super Mario Bros. 2; Super Mario Bros. 3; Super Mario World; Yoshi's Island; Super Mario 64 (as the theme for the cap power-ups) and New Super Mario Bros.; Super Mario Galaxy; New Super Mario Bros. • Super Mario Bros. 3 airship theme (NOT OK)Super Mario Bros. 3; Super Mario Galaxy; New Super Mario Bros. Wii; New Super Mario Bros. U; Super Mario 3D Land, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Super Smash Bros. series
  • Donkey Kong Country Jungle Hijinks (DK Island Swing) (OK)Donkey Kong Country; Donkey Kong Country 2; Donkey Kong 64; Super Smash Bros. Melee; Donkey Kong Jungle Beat; Mario Super Sluggers; Donkey Kong Country Returns; Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze etc.
  • Super Mario 64 Peach's Castle theme (OK)Super Mario 64; Donkey Kong Country 3; Mario Super Sluggers; Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!; New Super Mario Bros. Wii; New Super Mario Bros. U; Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars; Super Mario Odyssey etc.
  • Super Mario 64 Secret Slide theme (NOT OK)Super Mario 64; Super Smash Bros. Melee; Super Mario Galaxy 2; Paper Mario: Sticker Star; Super Mario 3D World; Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
You're only listing the Super Mario games in many cases. There's also the other subseries and the Smash Bros games, in which many of these appear. The later Mario & Sonic games have an additional amount of arrangements that many people don't even know about. The airship page actually lists the times its own theme appears. Furthermore, I'm counting different games using the exact same tune without arrangements as different games. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:18, 9 November 2018 (EST)
I did list the Smash series for some of these. Again, if you have anything new, add them. As for the last bit, I don't see why we shouldn't peg identical themes together. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 19:27, 9 November 2018 (EST)
Because every time the original SMB ground theme reappears in a faux-retro area, it's a separate occurrence, innit? Also, please remember that the Rainbow Cruise theme is additionally an arrangement of the Secret Slide theme. And the SMB3 fortress theme appears in literally every NSMB game, as well as TTYD. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:30, 9 November 2018 (EST)
I wouldn't say so. I'd rather the section with the original SMB theme simply mention which games it appears in as a facsimile. The super star theme from Smash, for example, is exactly the same as in SMB. And the SMB3 fortress theme, while veeery similar in tone to the NSMB and NSMB Wii version, has different notes. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 19:38, 9 November 2018 (EST)
Nah, other than slowing parts of it down, it's not any more substantially different from any other arranged song. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:19, 9 November 2018 (EST)

Another recognizable song is the N64 Rainbow Road song. But it only has 7 games, one of which isn't a Mario game: Mario Kart 64 (original), F-Zero X (due to that track being playable in that game), Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart 7 (both of these had it used for their Rainbow Roads), Mario Kart 8 (due to it being a retro track), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (as part of World 9 theme), and Paper Mario: Color Splash (as part of going onto that rainbow road). However, the info is already on the N64 Rainbow Road page (which is where I got all this info from). Red Yoshi in a construction hat walking Yoshi the SSM (talk) 19:46, 9 November 2018 (EST)

If we're giving articles for recurring themes, I think they should use the names they were given in various soundtracks and other official sources, with the original game as the identifier if there are multiple of that type, e.g.

  • Ground Theme (Super Mario Bros.) - Super Mario History 1985-2010 soundtrack, Smash 3DS/Wii U in-game and soundtrack
  • Underground Theme (Super Mario Bros.) - Smash 3DS/Wii U in-game and soundtrack
  • Invincibility Theme - No sources I can find; conjectural title, maybe?
  • Fortress BGM (Super Mario Bros. 3) - 30th anniversary soundtrack
  • Fortress Boss (Super Mario Bros. 3) - Smash Ultimate
  • Airship Theme - Smash Bros.
  • DK Island Swing - Original soundtrack title
  • Inside the Castle Walls - Original soundtrack title
  • Slider - Original soundtrack title

Also, and I brought this up on Doc's talk page a while back, while we also have the lists of song appearances, I think it'd be good to add some information on the history and making of the song at the top of the page, if available. Small Mario sprite from Super Mario Bros. Mario JC 20:11, 9 November 2018 (EST)

The Smash games just call it the invincibility theme, don't they? Sure, it's a later variation, but it's a more generic name than say, Powerful Infant. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:19, 9 November 2018 (EST)
I don't recall it being given a name since it was never an individual song in the Sound Test, at least in Brawl and 3DS/Wii U since those are the only ones I've played. Small Mario sprite from Super Mario Bros. Mario JC 20:28, 9 November 2018 (EST)
I was pretty sure it was in the Smash or misc sections.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:52, 9 November 2018 (EST)
The slider theme is in the M&S games, different versions in both Rio and Sochi. So, that fills in 8 games unambiguously. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:06, 10 November 2018 (EST)

Despite not meeting the criteria, I think the airship theme and slide theme (and maybe the SMB3 boss theme?) should still be considered, considering how iconic they are, along with the theme that plays in the SM64 Bowser levels. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 10:24, 10 November 2018 (EST)

I would personally agree with at least the airship theme, as it appears in almost every game that airships appear in, including Super Mario Run, which doesn’t seem to have been mentioned here or on the airship page (it's the same as New Super Mario Bros. Wii's, but so is New Super Mario Bros. U's). --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 10:40, 10 November 2018 (EST)
Like I said a comment above, the slider theme indisputably meets the criteria, Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:33, 10 November 2018 (EST)

The Chill and Fever themes from Dr.Mario should get articles too, as they appeared in multiple smash games as well as the Dr.Mario series games.--Doomhiker (talk) 10:53, 10 November 2018 (EST)

As a reminder for when we make the page, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga had three variations of the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme: the Warp Pipe map theme, the tutorial/Border Jump theme, and the Little Fungitown theme. Scrooge200 (talk) 23:26, 12 November 2018 (EST)

Is it worth considering the Bob-omb Battlefield theme for a page? I'm not sure how many times it appears, but it seems fairly frequent. Also several Super Mario 64 themes appear in the Minecraft Super Mario Mash Up pack, I don't know if those would be counted but it may take a few over the minimum. I'm not sure of the whole list, but the Slide, Peach's Castle and Bob-omb Battlefield themes are definitely in there. BBQ Turtle (talk) 18:14, 13 November 2018 (EST)

Oh yeah, definitely. I think the SMW theme could also get a page. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 18:50, 13 November 2018 (EST)
Forgot to mention that exceptions should probably be available on a case-by-case basis, but I suppose that goes without saying. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:24, 14 November 2018 (EST)
