Template:Level Criss Kross Cliffs is the thirty-seventh level in the Super Nintendo and Game Boy Advance game, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. It is also the second are of the lost world, Krematoa. In the game's Game Boy Advance remake, the level is instead the forty-third level.

In order to get to the top of this cliff level, the Kongs will have to bounce on steel kegs blasted upwards by a Bazuka at the bottom of the area. There will be parts in the level where the Kongs must use Switch Barrels to turn the kegs into TNT Barrels in order to defeat red Buzzes that can be in the monkeys' way. The Kongs must then hit the Switch Barrels a second time in order to restore the kegs so they can continue upwards. Re-Koils, Buzzes, Klasps, and Kuff 'n' Klout are this level's enemies, and they can cause quite some trouble.

In the European and Japanese versions of Donkey Kong Country 3, there are far more red Buzzes than in the American version. This is because, in the American version, it is possible to bypass many of these red Buzzes without defeating them with TNT barrels by ascending through the level.

Level Layout

When the level begins, the Kongs will find the letter K above them and ride along some steel barrels shot by a nearby Bazuka. They will soon be taken to a higher level where they can find a lost monkey with a DK Barrel. Moving farther up, they will need to hit a Switch Barrel to defeat a red Buzz, then hit it again to turn the TNT Barrels back into steel barrels. Continuing upwards, they will find another red Buzz in the way, whom they should defeat by climbing up several wooden platforms nearby and hitting a second Switch Barrel. Once the foe is defeated, they will be able to bounce to the next area with the barrels, where they will jump into a Barrel Cannon and automatically hit a Switch Barrel. It will turn the barrels into TNT Barrels, which they will need to avoid. They will be unable to continue with the TNT Barrels blasting at them, so they will have to pass the gap with the barrels and climb upwards on foot, using some wooden platforms. Avoiding the Re-Koils in the area, they will move across the gap with the TNT Barrels again to find a switch, which will turn the barrels back into their normal steel barrel form. Now that the monkeys can make their way upwards, they should ride up the barrels and move through a large area, followed by a small alcove. If they get in this alcove, they will find the Star Barrel.

About halfway into the level, the heroes will continue their ascent and find a fork in the road later on land. Taking the left passage will make them head past some Kuff 'n' Klouts, while heading to the right will make them climb up some horizontal tightropes, avoiding Klasps. Either way they take, they will soon find themselves at the same point, where they will ride up the mountain with more steel barrels and pass the letter G, found in another small alcove. Heading west at the sight of the next red Buzz, they heroes will hop up to the top of the area with some platforms and beat the Buzz by using a Switch Barrel. If they move farther up at this point, they will be taken to another area, where they will find a Barrel Cannon. It will shoot them to a set of tightropes to climb. Once they get up the ropes, they will move along more kegs to be taken to a part of the mountain with more horizontal tightropes. After they jump up from the two ropes, they will hit a Switch Barrel to defeat a red Buzz in their path. When the enemy is completely gone, they should scale more of the mountain. Soon, they will find an area with a flagpole. When they raise its flag, the level will end.

Secrets

Bonus Levels

  • At the beginning of the level, the Kongs will ride upwards on some kegs to find a wall of two red Buzzes to the right. They should bounce over these enemies to land in a Bonus Barrel. It will lead them to a Bonus Level, where they will collect fifteen green bananas while watching out for a vertically-firing Bazuka, who will fire TNT Barrels. Once they grab enough bananas, they will find a Bonus Coin nearby.
  • After finding the Koin, the heroes should ride up on the barrels and enter a large, open area. There, they should travel to the right to find a Bonus Barrel high in the air. Using the Team-up move, Kiddy will need to throw Dixie into the barrel. This will send them both into a Bonus Level, where they will ride upwards on some barrels to find five Knik-Knaks. Once they beat all these insects, they will find a Bonus Coin to the right.

DK Coin

  • After the letter G, the heroes should climb up the area and hit a switch to change the steel kegs into TNT Barrels. This will defeat a nearby red Buzz. Then, the monkeys will have change the barrels back into their normal type and begin to climb back down to ride upwards on the steel kegs. If they stay to the right while riding on the barrels, they will enter a small alcove with the Koin, who will have the DK Coin. They should stand on this enemy's strong shield and throw a nearby steel barrel at the wall after they find him. The barrel will bounce off of the wall and hit the distracted Kremling in the side. This will defeat him, thus giving the Kongs the DK Coin.
