A blue Floatsam.

Floatsam are spotted stingrays that inhabit the waters of Crocodile Isle. Their name is derived from the word "flotsam", which is leftovers from a shipwreck; many walkthroughs and guides even erroneously call this creature Flotsam, which is how it is spelled in the cast list of both Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2.

Floatsams come in two colors: blue and green. Blue Floatsam swim in only one direction, while the green Floatsam can change their direction from left to right; they generally do this when they reach a wall.

History

Donkey Kong Land

What could possibly be Floatsam appear in Donkey Kong Land, here they fuse together to create Wild Sting, a giant stingray boss. Alternatively, these stingrays could be the creative inspiration or the forerunners of Floatsam.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Floatsam are one of the most common underwater enemies in the game, encountered in almost all water-involved levels. They simply float through the water oblivious, and make no real effort in attacking Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong. However if the Kongs are in the path of a Floatsam, it will continue to swim forward, no needing to avoid contact. Floatsam can only be defeated with help from Enguarde the Swordfish.

Donkey Kong Land 2

Floatsam also appear in Donkey Kong Country 2's pseudo-sequel Donkey Kong Land 2. There is no difference between these Floatsam and those of Donkey Kong Country 2.
