Flitters are dragonfly enemies that first appeared in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. These flying insects primarily live in the swamps of Crocodile Isle; however, Flitters can be found all over the Kremling home island. These enemies are commonly used as air-grunts by the Kremling Krew. As such, Flitters spend their days flying in the air, on the look-out for K. Rool’s enemies.
For Diddy Kong and his girlfriend Dixie, Flitters are among the weakest enemies in the Kremling Krew. In fact, just jumping is enough to defeat one. Flitters also don’t actively attack the Kong duo; they simply follow their flight paths, hitting anything in their way. While some Flitters fly in a straight line, other Flitters fly around in circles, guarding an important item. However, most Flitters are stationary, hovering in one place. Often, Flitters group themselves in long lines. As such, Dixie and Diddy can use this group enemies to reach some special spots, almost inaccessible for the Kongs.
Flitters also appear in Donkey Kong Land 2. Although Crocodile Isle was destroyed in the previous game, the island was resurrected, along with all its inhabitants.
Flitters returned in the game DK: King of Swing, apparently surviving the second destruction of Crocodile Isle. In this game, a charge attack can defeat one, as jumping on them won't do anything. They also appear in DK Jungle Climber.
Several Flitters can be seen in the trailer for the cancelled game, Donkey Kong Racing. This appearance in the trailer sparked rumors that Flitters were going to be one of the game's rideable creatures.
Flitters perform the same function as Neckys and Hogwashes from other games in the Donkey Kong series.
