Ghosts take the form of spirits with their legs replaced by tails and glowing the color of their character. While in this form, the screen will turn black and white, text reading "Help me!" will appear above the ghost character's head, and a five-second countdown will appear; during the countdown, the ghost character's face will gain a panicked expression and shiver in fear when the countdown is anywhere below three. The ghost must touch another player in play or a standee to respawn in their Small form if not playing as a Yoshi or Nabbit; if the countdown runs out before this happens, they lose a life. A player earns Heart Points by reviving an online player in this way. The player can also hold switch and switch while in play to intentionally become a ghost, then press them again as a ghost to lose a life immediately. The more times they are defeated and turned into a ghost then rescued during the same life, the shorter the ghost lifetime, indicated by the counter speeding up. When a player loses a life, they will gasp in disbelief, swirl around, then vanish.

Ghosts[1] are forms in Super Mario Bros. Wonder that characters take in co-op or online play mode when they are defeated and out of play, serving as the replacement for bubbles found in previous Super Mario games. Ghosts take the form of spirits resembling either a character's Small form or, in the case of the Yoshis and Nabbit, their default form.

While in this form, the character gains the ability to move freely in any direction, even being able to pass through solid walls, as well as the ability to briefly gain a burst of speed by pressing B Button. However, a timer is displayed that counts down from five seconds; the player character will begin to panic when the countdown is anywhere below three. The ghost must touch another player in play or a standee in order to respawn; they will be in their Small form if not playing as a Yoshi or Nabbit. A player earns Heart Points by reviving an online player in this way. The ghost form's timer will count down progressively faster for each time the player is rescued. If the countdown runs out before the player respawns, they lose a life. The player can also hold L Button and R Button while in play to intentionally become a ghost, then press them again as a ghost to lose a life immediately.
