Surf's Up is the thirty-sixth level in the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 3 and the sixth and last regular level of Pacifica. Similarly to Demolition Drain-Pipe, Surf's Up involves Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong riding in a high-speed toboggan through a pipeline. Many green Buzzes are encountered along the way, and the toboggan can jump off them to gain a height boost. In parts of the level, there are railings attached to the ceiling that the toboggan can cling on, allowing the Kongs to avoid obstacles and enemies below them. Shortly after passing the Star Barrel, the Kongs land into a Blast Barrel which ejects them from the toboggan. The Kongs have to go through the rest of the level on foot. The walking segment still has many Buzzes but also Krumples, Krimps, and both red and yellow Knik-Knaks. Some Kocos appear in the first Bonus Level. After reaching the midpoint, the Kongs can throw a Steel Barrel at the wall and ride it all the way to the Level Flag.
The American release noticeably has an exploit where Kiddy can use the team up ability to toss Dixie over the Blast Barrel at the start that would normally force them into the toboggan. By doing so, the Kongs can go through the toboggan segment on foot. The Japanese and European releases instead add a second Blast Barrel above the toboggan, however.
Layout[edit]
At the beginning of the level, the Kongs jump into a small gap and land in a lower area. There, they must pass a Krumple and walk up to a toboggan. Getting in the vehicle, they automatically begin to move. As they travel on the toboggan, they find themselves jumping over and sliding under many green Buzzes. Soon, the monkeys find a wall of two red Buzzes in their path, so they need to make the toboggan grab onto the above railing to dodge them. A green Buzz is just beyond the railing, so they have to get off of the bar as soon as possible. Continuing through the level, the Kongs ride inside of the curvy pipeline, avoiding countless numbers of Buzzes. Sometimes, they need to use the metal bars at the top of certain areas to pass gaps and Buzzes. Following this is the Star Barrel.
About halfway into the level, the apes find themselves dodging more green Buzzes and crossing more gaps. Soon, they find another wall of red Buzzes in their way, so a railing is required to use to dodge the wasps. After the heroes ride through the rest of the area in the toboggan, jumping over several road block obstacles, they see an Auto-Fire Barrel in the distance. Before crashing into the wall, they must get into the barrel and shoot through a short chain of barrels. They barrels fire them to the letter N, and then to the ground, free from the toboggan. Heading on foot, they pass a few strong Krumples and encounter a swarm of three Buzzes, each moving in a circular pattern. They must carefully dodge the foes and pass a few more Krumples to meet some green Buzzes flying up and down in the pipeline. When they move upwards, the monkeys need to dash under them to avoid the enemies. After dodging another swarm of green Buzzes, the monkeys find a few Krimps to avoid, as well as a Blast Barrel. The barrel shoots them upwards. While airborne, the player needs to guide the Kongs onto a nearby ledge to progress. Traveling to the east, the apes cross a small gap and find a flagpole. Raising its flag ends the level.

DK Coin[edit]
At the end of the level, there is a small gap. The Kongs must pass the Knik-Knak within it and land in an area with the Koin. Dixie or Kiddy must avoid a red Buzz, pick up a Steel Barrel, and throw it at the wall, causing it to hit Koin from behind and defeat him. The Kongs are automatically rewarded with the DK Coin.
K-O-N-G Letters[edit]
- K: Over the second hot pipe in the level
- O: Floating to the top-left of the second Buzz after the Bonus Coin. It cannot be obtained if the Kongs enter the first Bonus Barrel, because when they exit the room, they are sent beyond the letter O in the main level.
- N: Obtained by entering an Auto-Fire Barrel found by progressing through the level normally. It is the only letter that appears in the North American version.
- G: Floating underneath a red Knik-Knak shortly before the Level Flag.
Bonus Levels[edit]
Surf's Up has two Bonus Levels, listed by type, and both have a 30-second time limit:
- Collect 30 Stars!: During the toboggan section of the level, Dixie and Kiddy approach an area with two small gaps in the ground and an overhead railing. As the toboggan approaches the area, the Kongs must jump with the toboggan to latch on the railing and then go above the first gap. A lone banana is in the second gap. By dropping the toboggan to the lone banana, the Kongs land into a hidden Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, Diddy and Dixie have to swim through a flooded pipeline and collect thirty stars while avoiding Kocos. When the Kongs collect every star, the Bonus Coin appears for them to collect.
- Find the Coin!: Just before the end of the level, the Kongs are shot out of a Blast Barrel. They must land onto the ledge to the left, which has a Bonus Barrel hidden in the corner of the area. The Kongs can enter the Bonus Barrel by bouncing from a nearby yellow Knik-Knak or by performing their team up move. In the Bonus Level, Dixie and Kiddy have to ride their toboggan while avoiding several Buzzes. The Bonus Coin appears at the very end.
