The Double Jump (also known as the Midair Jump) is a move that appears in platform games. It allows for a character to jump while being in midair, which is a state that characters are usually unable to jump from. Generally, the move is used by pressing the jump button when the player's character is not touching the ground. Despite what the name implies, a character does not need to jump off the ground in order to double-jump afterward; players are allowed to walk directly off a platform and then double-jump. Under most circumstances, only a single Double Jump can be performed between leaving the ground and landing on the ground, but there are some exceptions to this rule.
Though Double Jumps are uncommon in the Super Mario franchise, certain techniques are comparable to it, such as the Flutter Jump and spin, because they allow a character to rise higher into the air while already airborne.
History[edit]
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Midair Jump is a basic move that all characters can use. This move can be performed by pressing a jump button or tilting upward when a character is in midair, which makes the character jump again, though most of them can do so only once before landing. This move can serve many helpful purposes in a match, such as reaching high platforms and recovering from being knocked off the stage. Some characters' Midair Jumps can go higher than other characters', certain characters such as Ness and Mewtwo have floaty Midair Jumps that cause them to ascend more slowly, and certain other characters, namely Kirby, Jigglypuff, King Dedede, and winged characters, can even perform multiple Midair Jumps without touching the ground. Certain items can change the effect of a Midair Jump. For example, a Bunny Hood increases the height gained from both a normal jump and a Midair Jump, and the Screw Attack item, when equipped, turns any character's normal jumps and Midair Jumps (first Midair Jump only for those with more than one) into a spinning attack that deals damage to the opponent. When a character is carrying a heavy item, such as a Crate or a Barrel, or using certain weapon items, such as a Hammer, they are unable to perform a Midair Jump.
Super Mario series[edit]
In Super Mario Run, Daisy can double-jump when the player taps the screen while in the air. This jump reaches a little less than half the maximum height of a normal jump.
In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Toadette is able to double-jump in midair while in her Peachette form, this time when the player presses in midair or shakes the controller, similar to Flying Squirrel Mario.
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, all playable characters can double-jump by equipping the Boosting Spin Jump badge, which modifies the Midair Spin to function as one.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo Switch)[edit]
In the Nintendo Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Funky Kong is able to perform double jumps with his surfboard.
