The SMB2 Mushroom (short for "Super Mario Bros. 2 Mushroom") is a power-up introduced in the version 3.0.0 update in Super Mario Maker 2 released on April 22, 2020. As the name suggests, it is based on the Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. 2. It is exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. game style; in Course Maker, they are replaced by Frog Suits in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, Power Balloons in the Super Mario World style, and Super Acorns in the New Super Mario Bros. U style. In the nighttime ground theme, SMB2 Mushrooms bounce whenever the player jumps.

The mushroom transforms the player character into SMB2 versions of themselves (in the case of Toadette, her sprite is fully original as she did not appear in Super Mario Bros. 2). All characters have similar physics to Mario from the original game.

The mushroom affects gameplay in the following ways:

  • The player character stands on enemies instead of jumps defeating them as usual (exceptions include Boom Boom and the Koopalings).
  • The player character can perform the charge jump.
  • The player character can pick up and throw enemies to defeat other enemies and collect coins.
  • The player character can pick up the shells of large enemies.
  • The player character can pick up and ride on Bullet Bills, Banzai Bills, and cannonballs.
  • The player character can pick up Chain Chomps and use them to defeat enemies.
  • The player character can dig through Cloud Blocks.
  • In the snow theme, the player character can pick snowballs out of ground tiles.

Similar to the Superball Flower and Master Sword items, the SMB2 Mushroom also causes music from Super Mario Bros. 2 to play, and changes music depending on the course theme. When using the SMB2 Mushroom in the ground, sky, underwater, forest, desert, airship, and snow themes, the music is replaced by the overworld theme from that game; and in the underground, ghost house, and castle themes, the game's underground theme plays. Sound effects are also borrowed from the game. The boss theme sound effect while in SMB2 Mario is the boss theme from that game, while the final boss sound effect is Wart's boss theme. The bonus game theme uses the source game's character select music, while the Peaceful theme uses the music of the source game's ending. P Switches use the source game's Subspace music, while the sound effect of a thrown POW Block is borrowed from the same action in Super Mario Bros. 2 as well.

Profiles[edit]

  • Play Nintendo: "Additional power-ups and course parts are also coming to Super Mario Maker 2 as part of the free update. This includes the SMB2 Mushroom, which transforms Mario and friends into their look from the Super Mario Bros. 2 game and allows them to pick up and throw items and enemies – just like in that classic game!"[1]
