Unlike previous games in the series, the game takes place in a hotel run by ghosts rather than an actual mansion. Like the previous main installment, it was developed by Next Level Games. The game is 7.3 GB in file size, though it can be expanded with downloadable content (DLC). | ||

Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and | Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and a trio of Toads are invited to a hotel called The Last Resort for a vacation, which they travel to via a charter bus driven by one of the Toads. Soon after Luigi and the gang arrive, they head inside the Grand Lobby during broad daylight and check in at the front desk with the hotel's bellhop, the Steward. They are introduced and later escorted by the owner of the hotel, a mysterious woman named Hellen Gravely, to their fifth-floor rooms. Princess Peach is seen heading towards her respective hotel room (Room 501), Mario to his (Room 502), and finally Luigi to his own (Room 503). Inside his hotel room, Luigi starts to read a novel and immediately falls asleep. | ||

He gets out of bed with simply a flashlight in hand, exits his room and sees mysterious purple energy lurking through the hallway. He walks towards the floor's elevator to be greeted by Hellen, who is revealed to be a ghost. Hellen explains she invited Luigi and his friends out of admiration for her idol whom she reveals as none other than Luigi's arch-nemesis, King Boo, much to his horror. King Boo explains that Hellen had freed him from Professor E. Gadd's custody following his recapture in the previous game and announces his plan for revenge upon Luigi, showing his friends imprisoned in paintings. He begins chasing Luigi through the hallway to subject him to the same fate while placing Spirit Balls on all the hotel room doors and corners him at the end of the hallway. However, Luigi manages to escape by jumping into a laundry chute and falls all the way into a laundry hamper in the basement. | ||

He soon finds the professor trapped in another painting as well on the second floor and frees him by using the Dark-Light Device he finds in a vault. The now-freed E. Gadd asks Luigi to escort him out of the hotel, but he decides to stay when Luigi refuses to leave before saving his trapped friends. After Luigi and Professor E. Gadd return to the garage and the former defeats the Steward, E. Gadd sets up his portable lab, explaining how he too was tricked into visiting the hotel as part of Hellen's plan and gives him the Virtual Boo for communication. Professor E. Gadd then asks Luigi to retrieve his briefcase from the fifth floor, where Luigi recovers it from Chambrea and brings it back to him. The contents of the briefcase allow Luigi to call on Gooigi, a ectoplasmic doppelgänger of him, for help. | ||

Luigi also manages to rescue the Toads, who wait in E. Gadd's lab after being saved and escorted to the elevator. However, as he saves each of them, Hellen, observing from security monitors, grows more and more furious with his success. Once Luigi saves the third Toad, King Boo, having lost faith in Hellen, takes one of the last two paintings, Mario and Peach, in his possession. | ||

Once Luigi navigates through the various traps and puzzles, he finds the four keys that lead to Hellen's office. Hellen furiously berates him for the trouble he caused, including capturing Polterkitty, and costing her King Boo's approval. To redeem herself in King Boo's eyes, she proceeds to battle Luigi directly. Luigi defeats and captures Hellen Gravely and then frees Mario, who then leads him to the Rooftop. There, they find Peach's painting and Luigi sets her free. However, the group's embrace is interrupted when King Boo confronts them and reveals that he absconded with E. Gadd's lab, trapping E. Gadd and the Toads in another giant portrait. He attempts to do the same to Mario, Peach and Luigi, although he manages to get only the former two as Luigi is inadvertently shoved out of the way at the last second by Polterpup. King Boo, having lost his patience, then engages in battle with Luigi. | ||
With Gooigi's help, Luigi triumphs over King Boo once more before the Boo can entrap them all in the painting, although the hotel collapses immediately after the battle. Luigi is saved by Polterpup again and releases his friends from the painting. | With Gooigi's help, Luigi triumphs over King Boo once more before the Boo can entrap them all in the painting, although the hotel collapses immediately after the battle. Luigi is saved by Polterpup again and releases his friends from the painting. Soon after, the captured ghosts escape from E. Gadd's ghost canister, although they become social when the jewel from King Boo's crown vanishes, implying that they were brainwashed. The ghosts are saddened to see their home destroyed, so Luigi and his friends work with them to rebuild the hotel in E. Gadd's image and similar to Luigi's NEW Mansion from the first game, the rebuilt hotel takes a different look depending on how much money the player ends the game with. With the new hotel finished and the recaptured King Boo returned to E. Gadd's custody alongside Hellen and Polterkitty, E. Gadd, Gooigi and the ghosts bid farewell as everyone else departs for home on the charter bus. Luigi falls asleep on the bus with Polterpup as it rides into the sunset. | ||

Luigi's Mansion 3 plays much like the two previous entries in the series, Luigi's Mansion and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, returning to a singular setting much like the first game while featuring a variety of themed floors akin to the second game's mansions, allowing the player to re-explore already completed rooms. The Poltergust G-00 retains the basic qualities of the two previous vacuums, as well as the Strobulb item and the Dark-Light Device, though adds a targeting mechanism when blowing out items or a plunger. It also introduces new abilities, such as slamming ghosts on the ground or into each other, firing a grabable plunger with the Suction Shot, and creating a shockwave or being lifted up with a Burst. Luigi has a new device known as the Virtual Boo (VB), a parody of the Virtual Boy, which serves the same function as the Game Boy Horror and Dual Scream did from the two previous games. The money collected with the Poltergust G-00 can be used to buy Gold Bones (1,000 G), Boo Finder cartridges (1,000 G), Gem Finder cartridges (1,000 G), and also to buy hints from the Virtual Boo's E. Gadd Hotline while in the Lab inside the Basement to find in-game floor themed collectible gems and other various puzzles, which when brought will activate the HD Rumble in the Joy-Cons when getting close to a gem or Boo in morse code while in certain rooms on floors when using Gooigi, which can also be felt when using the Poltergust G-00. Professor E. Gadd will sometimes suggest Luigi to come to his Lab in the Basement to buy hints from him to solve the floor's puzzles and such whenever the player is struggling, though hints can be turned off in the Guide/Settings menu. There are six floor themed gems and one Boo on each floor. The game automatically fully saves progress whenever entering a room or elevator after ten seconds. There are in-game achievements for certain objectives. He is first revealed to have teamed up with Hellen at the RIP Suites and is the final boss of the game, being fought on the Rooftop, above the Master Suite. After defeating King Boo, the Last Resort is accidentally destroyed as a result of the battle and all the ghosts are freed from his control. Seeing the ghosts upset over the loss of their home, E. ===Critical reception=== | |||
Luigi's Mansion 3 received mostly positive reviews from critics. Points of praise have included the graphics, gameplay, story, characters, level design, and puzzles; though some considered the controls to be outdated and unfitting for the controllers, especially the use of the right analog stick. At the Game Awards 2019, Luigi's Mansion 3 won the award for Best Family Game. At the 16th British Academy Games Awards, Luigi's Mansion 3 was nominated in four categories: Best Game, Best Animation, Best Multiplayer, and Best Family Game; winning Best Animation.<ref>2020 BAFTA Games Awards: The Nominations. |Mario, it turns out, isn't the only plumber in Nintendo's employ who can carry his own great game. Luigi's Mansion 3 is so much fun, so charming, and so smartly designed that, moving forward, I really hope we get more than three of these games every 20 years. It's absolutely the best Ghostbusters game ever made – it just happens to star Mario's scaredy-cat brother rather than Peter Venkman and Ray Stantz. | |||

|But boss fights are a small sliver of the Luigi's Mansion 3 experience. Each level is a complex onion of ideas to peel back, layer by layer. Next Level Games continues its strong tradition of granting Luigi far more depth than his superstar older brother, even if he is always doomed to keep getting scared for our enjoyment. | |||

|There are some caveats. For example, the controls can be unwieldy and complex, and some of the puzzles are frustratingly obtuse. But there also aren't many games like Luigi's Mansion 3, which makes it worth checking out. Sure, there are plenty of titles that manage to make a gun feel weighty in your hands or add a sense of physicality to swinging an axe, but Luigi's Mansion 3 takes that idea in a different direction by putting the same level of care and detail into a game about a clumsy, terrified plumber. | |||

|But while the multiplayer modes may not hold your attention for long, the strength of the Luigi's Mansion series has always stemmed from the satisfaction of exploring its carefully constructed settings, and in that regard Luigi's Mansion 3 certainly succeeds. The game may not radically diverge from the series' formula, but it offers up another meticulously crafted set of challenges to overcome while smoothing out some of the issues that held Dark Moon back, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you clear a particularly head-scratching obstacle is just as potent now as the first time Luigi unwillingly strapped a vacuum to his back and stepped into a haunted mansion. | |||

|Luigi's Mansion 3 is a little like Control, the sort of game that you don't see as often as you used to but cling to when you can. It is a contained, crafted experience, no more and no less than a professional, clean and near-perfect execution of an idea that you already like. It is not shockingly new or transcendent, but you don't always want that. It is relentlessly charming, consistently charming, and punctuated in every moment by the sheer joy of sucking. When the weather turns cold, pop this one in and imagine the troubles of the world gone, at least for a few hours. | |||

*Donkey Kong: On the Garden Suites seventh floor, Dr. Potter waters a plant that sprouts and then blasts out pineapples that bounce down the stairway, which Luigi and Gooigi have to dodge to the best of their ability, much like how Mario had to dodge the springboards bouncing down the platform being thrown by Donkey Kong. King Boo says "SHWEEERRPP-SHLOOOOP-WHOOORPP-SHLEEEOOORG!", mimicking the Poltergust, shortly before the final battle, just as he did in this game. Boolossus returns as the final boss of the ScareScraper. The endings for this game involving the rebuilt Last Resort hotel are similar to Luigi's NEW Mansion from the first game. While Luigi is battling with King Boo on the Rooftop above the Master Suite fifteenth floor, he has to throw Bombs into King Boo's mouth and make his mouth catch on fire, much like when Mario threw peppers at King Boo's mouth during the fifth episode of Sirena Beach called King Boo Down Below. | |||

*Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon: Luigi has to find the Poltergust G-00 inside Professor E. Gadd's car inside the Basement at the beginning of the game, much like when Luigi had to find the Poltergust 5000 inside a car in the Garage. The flashlight he uses before finding the G-00 model is the flashlight from the 5000 model. In the hallway in the theater on the Paranormal Productions eighth floor, a framed poster of Luigi pointing the Poltergust 5000 towards King Boo is seen. A painting in the Basement, the Mezzanine second floor bathroom, the RIP Suites fifth floor hallway, The Spectral Catch twelfth floor pirate ship room, and some sections of certain floors in the ScareScraper shows the Gloomy Manor mansion. The same music is played when sucking a ghost with the Poltergust G-00. Polterpup returns, though lacks pupils, and serves as the tutorial guide for the first few floors. The magician triplets called Nikki, Lindsey, & Ginny on the Twisted Suites eleventh floor share the same concept as The Three Sisters. A room on the Master Suite fifteenth floor has a small replica of the Gloomy Manor mansion with the Dark Moon above it. The Gloomy Manor theme can be heard in the elevator and Luigi will hum to the tone after a few seconds once the elevator doors have been opened up, as well as in the Room 508 Bathroom on the RIP Suites fifth floor through a radio after activating it with the Strobulb. Room 508 on the RIP Suites fifth floor has a poster showcasing the Poltergust 5000. The ScareScraper mode also returns. Once Luigi completes any floor, the same room clear theme plays. Just like with the first letters of this game's mansion names, possessors, and bonus missions, the first letter of each common ghost's name makes out the word "G.H.O.S.T." for Goobs, Hammers, Oozers, Slinkers, and Trappers respectively. When Luigi is capturing a boss ghost, an arrangement of the music that plays when capturing a Possessor can be heard. | |||

Luigi's Mansion 3 is a Nintendo Switch game, and the third original game in the Luigi's Mansion series, after Luigi's Mansion and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Unlike previous games in the series, the game takes place in a hotel run by ghosts rather than an actual mansion. Like the previous main installment, it was developed by Next Level Games. The game is 7.3 GB in file size, though it can be expanded with downloadable content (DLC).
Story[edit]
Prologue from the guide:
One day, Luigi received a letter. The letter was sent by Hellen Gravely, the owner of a big hotel up in the mountains. When Luigi opened it, he discovered that it was a special invitation!
"Congratulations, Luigi! You're the lucky winner of a free stay at a world-class hotel, The Last Resort! We look forward to dazzling you with first-rate hospitality and service. Please be sure to invite any friends or family that you'd like to bring, as well!" -Hellen Gravely
Luigi was overcome with excitement at the letter and rushed to invite his big brother, Mario, as well as Princess Peach and a trio of Toads. Soon, they all departed for the hotel. Upon arriving at the beautiful hotel, Luigi and his friends were warmly welcomed by Hellen Gravely herself! Afterward, they were each shown to their rooms.
Little did they realize it was all a trap put in motion by Hellen Gravely in order to impress a resurgent King Boo. Awakened in the night by Princess Peach's scream, Luigi found the giant hotel swarming with ghosts. Not only that, but all of his friends had been sealed inside picture frames! Will Luigi be able to rescue his trapped friends and escape the hotel in one piece?
Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and a trio of Toads are invited to a hotel called The Last Resort for a vacation, which they travel to via a charter bus driven by one of the Toads.
Luigi later wakes up on a dark night and hears Peach screaming, the hotel's atmosphere now haunted with everyone but him gone missing.
Luigi is woken up by Polterpup and manages to find the Poltergust G-00 inside E. Gadd's car.
While searching the hotel for his friends, Luigi must also recover the missing elevator buttons from powerful ghosts encountered at the end of the its many floors to access the rest; in two instances, he must track down and battle Hellen Gravely's pet cat, Polterkitty, who steals the buttons just as he is about to install them in the elevator and hides in the previous floors.
Luigi reaches the last floor, the Master Suite, but as soon as he arrives, Hellen Gravely appears on a monitor and reveals she has Mario's painting in her possession (meaning King Boo has Peach's), challenging him to confront her.
Gameplay[edit]
Story mode (co-op), ScareScraper (co-op), and ScreamPark cannot be played in co-op multiplayer on the Nintendo Switch Lite without detached official Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. There is a brightness slider to control the hue of a given area from darker to lighter in the game's Settings.
Gooigi, first officially introduced in the Nintendo 3DS remake of the first Luigi's Mansion, reappears and is stored in the Poltergust G-00, hence Gooigi. Gooigi has 25 HP, while Luigi has 99 HP, and can be called upon to pass obstacles Luigi cannot, such as spikes and bars. However, he is weak to fire and water, and will lose all his health immediately if he comes into contact with them, causing him to immediately return to Luigi. A Game Over occurs when Luigi loses all of his HP. It features a cutscene where King Boo has Luigi, Mario, Professor E. Gadd, Princess Peach and the two Toads trapped inside paintings; he turns around to face the viewers while laughing evilly. Like the previous installments, the scene ends with the phrase, "Good Night!" Luigi and Gooigi cannot be controlled at the same time in single-player mode, but Gooigi can be controlled by a second player with the second Joy-Con (R) controller for co-op multiplayer. If Luigi attempts to enter a door with Gooigi out, Gooigi will automatically retract into the Poltergust G-00.
Unlike in Luigi's Mansion and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, once King Boo is captured, the player cannot save their data after the credits have been played. This makes it impossible to save the money collected before the final battle; the player must load up a story checkpoint before entering the door to the final battle.
ScareScraper[edit]
- Main article: ScareScraper
The ScareScraper, originating from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, makes a return, allowing for up to eight-player co-op multiplayer (via four Luigis and four Gooigis) to clear either 5, 10, 20, or a random amount of floors between two to twenty, with a five-minute time limit for each floor, except the Rooftop, which has a time limit of ten minutes with different challenges on each floor such as Capture the Ghosts!, Find the Toads!, Collect the Money! and Defeat the Crows!. It acts very similar to its prequel appearance, though adds new abilities and functions such as the super suction, super strobe, a red siren fake door detector helmet, voice chat and the Blackout. Boolossus awaits the Luigis and Gooigis at the top of the ScareScraper hotel Rooftop upon completing all the set floors.
ScreamPark[edit]
- Main article: ScreamPark
A multiplayer party mode where two teams called Team Luigi and Team Gooigi consisting of Luigis and Gooigis respectively, set to compete against each other on different levels with a two minute time limit where they have to capture the most Goobs (Ghost Hunt), collect the most coins while riding floaties in an indoor swimming pool (Coin Floating), or attain the most bull's-eye targets on the ends of a rotating wooden pirate wheel while avoiding hitting a wooden castle pellet trap (Cannon Barrage) to win.

The Boos[edit]
- Main article: List of Boos in Luigi's Mansion 3
Image | HP | Total # of Boos | Description |
---|---|---|---|
20 | 16 | With the exception of the Master Suite, a Boo can be found on each floor after collecting a floor's Elevator Button, leaving, then coming back. The Boos start appearing once the Mezzanine is cleared then returning to Professor E. Gadd's lab. Each Boo has a pun name and a line of dialogue. Boos will hide in a random spot and the players' controllers will vibrate the closer they get to their hiding spot. Searching the wrong spot will make the Boo hide in a new spot and actually finding the Boo will activate its fight; it will turn invisible and sneakily hurt the player. Casting the Dark-Light Device on the Boo will reveal and daze it so the player can then grab its tongue with the Poltergust G-00's suction and slam it repeatedly, doing a total of 10 HP damage. A Boo needs to be repeatedly slammed at least twice for it to be defeated. Defeating all of the Boos in the game will grant the player the "Captured All Boos" achievement and the Flashlight Type-B. |

Image | Name | HP | ScareScraper-exclusive? | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Goob | 100 | No | The most common ghosts in the game. They are mischievous blue ghosts that can be seen wearing various attires such as hotel staff suits. They attack by using a short-range punch or spinning around; as such, they are the successor to Greenies from the previous game. | |
Hammer | 200 | No | Large and brawny red ghosts with square heads that attack by charging towards Luigi and literally hammering the floor. Due to their obstructive figure, they can only be sucked up from the back. They look very similar to Slammers, and even have similar names to them. | |
Oozer | 100 | No | Skinny yellow ghosts that can hide in furniture and occasionally pop out to throw billard or tennis balls, then go into another hiding spot if not captured. Some Oozers may stay in place and also throw food at the player. Their behavior is similar to Hiders from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, except that they are much more aggressive. | |
Slinker | 120 | No | Purple ghosts capable of being able to scare the player, stunning them for a bit. They can also pick up the player and hold onto them; Burst is required to blow them away. They can be discovered with the Dark-Light Device and are also tricky to capture. | |

Nintendo website description[edit]
Luigi's dream vacation turns into a ghostly—and gooey— nightmare! Luigi embarks on a dream vacation with Mario and friends upon receiving an invitation to a luxurious hotel. However, his dream quickly becomes a nightmare when King Boo reveals everything had been a ploy to capture Mario and friends. With the assistance of Professor E. Gadd once again, the reluctant and cowardly hero Luigi traverses up and down treacherous floors of the now-ominous hotel on a quest to save them. Wield the upgraded Poltergust G-00 to slam and blow away the ghosts’ defenses, or summon Gooigi, an all-green doppelganger that can help Luigi overcome obstacles he can't get past alone. Interchange between Luigi and Gooigi as one player, or grab a friend and control one each. For more frenetic multiplayer action, race the timer to clear various objectives on a series of floors in ScareScraper mode. ScareScraper mode can be played online* or locally with up to eight players on four Nintendo Switch systems (additional games required; sold separately).

The game was originally going to be a Wii U title, though development started for the Nintendo Switch in earnest following the completion of Next Level Games' Metroid Prime: Federation Force.[4] The Slam and Burst moves were planned during the Wii U prototype.[5] Prior to his debut appearance in the Nintendo 3DS remake of Luigi's Mansion, Gooigi was already planned for Luigi's Mansion 3 upon the Nintendo Switch's launch when the developers got the inspiration from the Joy-Con for multiplayer mode.[6] While in development for the Nintendo Switch, Luigi's Mansion 3 was originally a tentative title prior to becoming the final name.[7]
In an interview, producer Kensuke Tanabe mentioned that the developers had experimented with including a warp system where the player could turn on TV sets found in the rooms and warp between them to travel throughout the entire hotel, much like the Paranormal Productions eighth floor. However, as it was not possible to include a TV in every room, the idea of using this mechanic throughout the entire hotel was scrapped in favor of the elevator idea.[8]
The Grand Lobby first floor originally had a bland different wall design above the front desk area.
The Mezzanine second floor dining room had different table clothes with no table lamps on top and there wasn't a lobster or ice cream inside a white ceramic pedestal dish in the back wall table.
The Hotel Shops third floor indoor shopping mall's gift shop had a different interior design compared to the final version, as well as no stacked chairs or a janitor's cart infront of it either.[9]
The Great Stage fourth floor theater hallway had no Boo design on the wall on top of the Mad Piano painting, but a later version does.
While Luigi is reading a novel on the bed in his RIP Suites fifth floor hotel room (Room 503) and quickly falls asleep, he did not drop the book exactly in-between his lower stomach center area, nor has, "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ," coming out of him while snoring. Mario's hotel room (Room 502) was different looking, lacking fog, had the purple comfy chair closer to the table near the bed with two pizza boxes on top, there was another purple comfy chair to the right of the table closest to Mario's bed, Mario's two slippers are apart from each other, there were four pizza boxes on top of a mobile serving table, the chair in the back left was tipped over, Mario's suitcase with his signature M emblem on it wasn't opened up, the table nearest to Mario's mattress had food that was tipped over, and such.
The Castle MacFrights sixth floor had dark and light stones on the back wall in the inner area infront of the wooden floorboards between both the rock and wooden stairs.
The Garden Suites seventh floor originally had a room with a large watermelon with three smaller watermelons besides it, though just four smaller watermelons in the final version.[10] The eighth floor elevator button on the Garden Suites seventh floor was originally to be collected by having Luigi water a plant that sprouts a beanstalk, which had to be climbed to reach the eighth floor elevator button on the tree's purple leaf, with the final version requiring Luigi and Gooigi to use the Poltergust G-00 to get to the top of the tree and suck on a venus flytrap's mouth open and have it fall all the way to the floor.
The Paranormal Productions eighth floor had the golden velvet rope barriers infront of a snow mountain prop near the elevator protruding out just slightly and had ceilings lights on the theater poster-like display hallway area. The Fire Set room did not have a Polterkitty, just a Hammer and Goobs.
The Dance Hall fourteenth floor originally had green/blue colored three way subwoofer loudspeakers.
The exterior of the ScareScraper hotel originally did not have translucent windows.

Hellen Gravely[edit]
- "Guests! Welcome to The Last Resort! My name is Hellen Gravely, and I am the owner of this hotel. I am absolutely delighted that you decided to accept my invitation. You all must be very tired. Come! Allow me to show you to your rooms. Oh, no need to worry about your luggage! Our exceptional staff will take care of it for you... Ha ha ha... You're our VIPs, after all! We've prepared a first-rate experience for you. All the trappings of luxury! Shall we get going? Mario, Luigi, and Peach's rooms are over here. We've prepared rooms for you Toads as well! I hope you enjoy your stay! I daresay you'll remember it for the rest of your lives! Ha ha ha..."
King Boo[edit]
- "Mwah ha ha! Surprise, Luigi! It's-a me, King Boo! That old coot had me locked up tight in his lab... But guess what? I GOT OUT! The hotel owner here was just dying to meet me, so she busted me out. Pretty lucky, huh? Anyway, I didn't think you'd actually show up here. I was ready though, just in case. In fact, my vengeance is nearly complete! What do I mean by "vengeance"? Glad you asked! I'm trapping you and everyone in your little vacation party...in frames! Awww, there there, Luigi. It'll all be over soon. It's time for a family reunion! BOO-YA! Mwah ha ha! Take THAT! Oh, and there's one more frame, of course. I saved it especially for you! Stay right there and put on your best terrified face, Luigi! This is game over!"
Professor E. Gadd[edit]
- "Ah! If it isn't Luigi! You are precisely the last person I'd expect to find here. Hold that thought—now isn't the time to catch up. What matters is...you'll do nicely! Come on, Luigi. Get me out of here now! The hotel is filled to the brim with ghosts! Let's make a run for it! What was that? All of your friends have been captured?! And you can't just abandon them here, you say? You're the same as ever, I see. A bit of a handful... OK. I'm not thrilled about it, but I, Professor Elvin Gadd, have an idea! First things first, Luigi. We have to get to my car! Will you take me there? Hey. The new Poltergust G-00 you're wearing... You took that out of my car, right? We've got to get back to the underground garage. Let's go!"

8.3/10 | Mario, it turns out, isn't the only plumber in Nintendo's employ who can carry his own great game. |
Nintendo Switch | Chelsea Stark, Polygon |
N/A | But boss fights are a small sliver of the Luigi's Mansion 3 experience. Each level is a complex onion of ideas to peel back, layer by layer. Next Level Games continues its strong tradition of granting Luigi far more depth than his superstar older brother, even if he is always doomed to keep getting scared for our enjoyment. |
Nintendo Switch | Andrew Webster, The Verge |
N/A | There are some caveats. |
Nintendo Switch | Kevin Knezevic, GameSpot |
8/10 | But while the multiplayer modes may not hold your attention for long, the strength of the Luigi's Mansion series has always stemmed from the satisfaction of exploring its carefully constructed settings, and in that regard Luigi's Mansion 3 certainly succeeds. |
Nintendo Switch | Dave Thier, Forbes |
9/10 | Luigi's Mansion 3 is a little like Control, the sort of game that you don't see as often as you used to but cling to when you can. |

Sales[edit]
In the UK, Luigi's Mansion 3 topped the charts within a week of its release as the best selling Switch game of 2019, and upon release was only under Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.[12] As of March 31, 2021, the game had sold 9.59 million units worldwide, making it the best-selling Luigi's Mansion game.[13] As of March 31, 2024, the game had sold 14.25 million units worldwide.[14]
Promotion[edit]
At E3 2019, the Last Resort's Grand Lobby was recreated on Nintendo show floor. At the entrance were statues of Luigi holding the Poltergust G-00 and Gooigi which attendees could take pictures with.[15] On October 18, 2019, a promo event for the game was held in Los Angeles. Within the venue were the props used during E3 and stations to play the game's demo. Those who attended could put on and use the Poltergust G-00 replica created by Volpin Props.[16] After the game's launch, the Nintendo YouTube channel posted a parodic infomercial featuring the Poltergust G-00. The video highlights the features of the devices such as the ability to slam, burst and use Gooigi and the ScareScraper mode.[17] Later, a video was posted showing the construction process of the Poltergust G-00 by Volpin Props.[18]
Between October 22, 2021 through October 31, 2021, the United Kingdom My Nintendo Store held a contest where five entrants could receive a Luigi figurine by First 4 Figures. To enter, contestants had to purchase the game or a Nintendo Switch pack that includes Luigi's Mansion 3.[19] In addition, those who bought a console pack also received a free Luigi Cap.[20]

References to other games[edit]
- Donkey Kong: On the Garden Suites seventh floor, Dr. Potter waters a plant that sprouts and then blasts out pineapples that bounce down the stairway, which Luigi and Gooigi have to dodge to the best of their ability, much like how Mario had to dodge the springboards bouncing down the platform being thrown by Donkey Kong. Vacuuming one of the exercise bikes in the Fitness Room will cause it to play the Hammer theme from this game.
- Mario Bros. (Game & Watch): The pizza boxes in the RIP Suites fifth floor in Mario's hotel room (Room 502) and the Paranormal Productions eighth floor Micro Set (Studio 4) say, "Since 1983," referencing Luigi's debut appearance in this game (also the release year of the arcade game that is incorrectly referred to as Luigi’s debut).[21]
- Super Mario Bros.: Upon arriving at The Last Resort's Grand Lobby first floor, a new arrangement of the overworld theme can be heard if Luigi is near Mario.
- Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS: There are posters on the wall in The Great Stage fourth floor music theater area on the featuring various instruments with an angry expression, one of which being a painting of an angry piano, which Amadeus Wolfgeist hides inside of to battle Luigi.[22] A small portion of "Inside the Castle Walls" can be heard in the Grand Lobby first/second floor if Luigi is near Princess Peach.
- Luigi's Mansion: There is a indoor shopping mall area on the Hotel Shops third floor with stores themed after the four suits of a deck of cards consisting of a club, heart, diamond, and spade based on the four respective Area floor keys. King Boo's clones have two fangs which is based on King Boo's original design from the game where he had two fangs. Room 508 on the RIP Suites fifth floor has a poster showcasing the Poltergust 3000.
- Super Mario Sunshine: The Coins make a similar sound effect when collected like in this game. Mario is distracted by cake during the intro in the Grand Lobby first floor, later pizza in his RIP Suites fifth floor hotel room (Room 502), much like when he was distracted and daydreaming about seafood while watching TV on the airplane in the intro.
- Mario Strikers Charged: In the hallway in the theater on the Paranormal Productions eighth floor, a framed poster of Mario performing his Mega Strike move can be seen and another framed poster showing a bunch of characters running together from an aerial view.[23]
- Wario Land: Shake It!: The same Coin Bag can be seen on the bottom left corner for the amount of treasures (G) Luigi has collected and can also be found in some rooms of The Last Resort hotel.
- Punch-Out!! (Wii): In the hallway in the theater on the Paranormal Productions eighth floor, a framed poster of Little Mac in his victory pose with Doc Louis and Mr. Sandman in the background can be seen. Using Suction Shot on the poster will cause one of Little Mac's green boxing gloves to come flying out.[23] Two of Little Mac's gloves can also be seen lying on the floor within the Fitness Center thirteenth floor gym room, having been worn by a Hammer.
- Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition: A gym room on the Fitness Center thirteenth floor has a parallel curved golden leaf design on the top wall above the horizontal wall mirror seen on Princess Peach's press letter, and the same parallel curved golden leaf design can also be seen if either Team Luigi or Team Gooigi wins during ScreamPark.[24]
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon: Luigi has to find the Poltergust G-00 inside Professor E.
- Luigi's Mansion Arcade: King Boo's ability to create clones of himself is very similar to this game.
- Metroid Prime: Federation Force: In the hallway in the theater on the Paranormal Productions eighth floor, a framed poster of a Space Pirate and a group of Federation marines can be seen opposite the Punch-Out!! poster. The music Amadeus Wolfgeist plays on the piano before his boss battle is an arrangement of the title theme from this game.
- Luigi's Mansion (Nintendo 3DS): Gooigi first appears as a prototype in this game; E. Gadd hints at sending the prototype back in time in the remake when introducing him to Luigi in the Last Resort.
